Chickens are ready for winter | Coop clean out compost!
We use the deep litter method in our chicken coop, which means we only add fresh wood shavings when the coop starts to get dirty and smelly, keeping it fresh for about 6 months. I clean it out in the spring and fall, just before we set them up in their wintering spot. I use the coop clean out to make some amazing compost, mixing it with my fall garden waste. This produces enough compost for me each year for amending the garden beds, it is a completely circular process.
Enjoy!

Plant your garlic | It's not too late!

Garlic is a crop you plant in the fall, it is strange because this time of year, I am cleaning out the garden, so it seems funny to be planting, but garlic (and other bulbs are the exception) for next season's bounty. Sometimes, things turn out better than expected, and my first paddle with the girls surprised me! Although I set a world record for using the word "sit" over 1000 times in one hour, our maiden voyage was a success! If you have a colony set up, they will likely have more room to roam and venture out on their own, it is mostly removed at 17 days because it will start to smell and get dirty and by that time they are ready to be out with Mom.

The fog is so beautiful! I love these kinds of Autumn days. Your dogs are lovely. They looked a bit puzzled but did fine. They'll get used to canoeing, I'm sure. Just a friendly hint -you had your paddle upside down. If the writing on your paddle is upside down, your paddle is upside down. You can also see it if you look closely at the paddle: imagine a horizontal line through the middle. You'll see that the two halves are unequal. One half is a bit shorter and broader. That's the side that should be facing down to the water. I made the same mistake when I started paddling.

Thank you for watching, great question! Canoe allows me to pond-hop or portage and travel between lakes easily whereas that is much more difficult (but not impossible) with a kayak. Different boats for different types of travel. The big Agnes is VERY comfortable and honestly is my preference between the two. Happy tripping!

The other night , I had to make some decisions on reducing the ewe flock. It involved picking 4 ewes to balance out the genetics. One of the ewes had a hoof defect that prevents her from breeding or being sold. Thank you for sharing your first solo trip. I really enjoyed watching your journey, both physically and mentally. I went on my first solo this summer in the BWCA and I found myself reliving my trip through your story. I had similar thoughts on my trip. What am I going to do along for 5 days? Can I do it without talking to anyone? What will keep my mind occupied? Like you said, when you're on a trip with others you can talk things through. I woke up on morning two to an afternoon weather forecast of severe storms with possible baseball size hail. Yep, on my own with no one to talk to, that really messed with my head. In the end the storms went all around completely missing me. I took a day of rest after that day. It was in that day I began to understand why people do solo trips. I relaxed and enjoyed just being out there. I wasn't worried about how the group was doing. Not moving gave my mind and body a chance to unwind. My last day I paddled over to two trails that led up to some amazing cliff overlooks that were absolutely stunning. The trip was over and I didn't complete my planned route but I was ok with that because I found a new path to relaxing and enjoying the amazing place I was paddling through.
