New Year's Under The Stars | Finding Joy in The Simple Things
We live in a world of overstimulation, like crows always wanting the "shiny thing," rarely making time to slow down to rest and reflect. 2024 was a challenging year for us, filled with highs and lows, that's life. Challenges provide opportunities for growth, it is important and hard to remember that when you are in the midst of it. To celebrate the beginning of a new year, we spent time in the forest, listening to the snap, crackle and pop of the fire, sizzling sausages and howling coyotes. It was amazing. It's too bad you can't bottle these moments, but it's a good thing you can create them whenever you want!

Brian's Gift to the Animals | Merry and Bright!

Winter is my favourite season. The snow makes everything look so clean and fresh. I love the quiet of the woods at this time of year and sitting by the wood stove knitting. But before any of that can happen, we have to make sure all the animals that spend the winter outside are merry, and this year Brian made sure to also make it bright! Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season! Music Auld L...
Grow beans | Seeds are a connection to the past.

I put this job off this year because my heart wasn't ready. My journey in growing beans was supported largely by my friend Melissa, who passed away in August. She gave me so many of the bean varieties I grow, and this year, she mailed me "Lumberjack" beans to add to my collection. She also introduced me to Seed Savers Exchange, where many of my other beans came from. Seeds don't only provide no...
Chickens are ready for winter | Coop clean out compost!
Просмотров 105Месяц назад
We use the deep litter method in our chicken coop, which means we only add fresh wood shavings when the coop starts to get dirty and smelly, keeping it fresh for about 6 months. I clean it out in the spring and fall, just before we set them up in their wintering spot. I use the coop clean out to make some amazing compost, mixing it with my fall garden waste. This produces enough compost for me ...
Plant your garlic | It's not too late!

Garlic is a crop you plant in the fall, it is strange because this time of year, I am cleaning out the garden, so it seems funny to be planting, but garlic (and other bulbs are the exception) for next season's bounty. Sometimes, things turn out better than expected, and my first paddle with the girls surprised me! Although I set a world record for using the word "sit" over 1000 times in one hour, our maiden voyage was a success! It was a great way to end the paddling season, and I hope the 2026 season will be as exciting. Music Our Old Cabin by Ben Winwood artlist.io/royalty-free-music/song/our-old-cabin/88706
Surprise Fall Harvest!

I didn't spend much time in the garden this summer once the plants were off to the races. We were away for some of the time and busy with other projects, but the great thing about plants is that they want to grow! We were very happy with our squash and sweet potato harvest and still have a bed full of carrots, kale and brussel sprouts still to harvest. Grateful for the bounty we have for the wi...

This trip was one for the record books! I finally got my friend to go on a canoe trip with me after 11 years! We planned a quick trip into Rock Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park which didn't disappoint. The fall colours were spectacular, the weather was amazing, and the company was the best. It just goes to show you that weekend trips can be as great as longer adventures, and we sure needed it!...

The cost of raising your own meat | You can't run away from harvest day.

I raised turkeys for the first time two years ago because I couldn't handle the thought of eating turkeys raised in factory farms. Thanks for sharing! I did my first solo spring of 2024 and I could relate so much to a lot of what you said (fear of the dark/night, difficulty relaxing, self doubt, pushing outside of your comfort zone etc). I also LOVE “paddling my own canoe”. Esther is a personal hero of mine so I was crying with you when you stopped at her cabin. I think that’s a place I need to visit for myself. Well done 😊
Hi Stephanie! Thank you for your message and for watching. I’ve watched all of your videos and actually watched your solo video just after I had booked mine, so definitely drew inspiration from you! Keep up the great work out there and hopefully one day our paths will cross! Would love to pick your brain about the Meanest Link!
@ ok that’s so cool!! I definitely felt a kinship with you watching your video. I’m absolutely honoured to be part of your inspiration to get out there! I just discovered your channel and I’ve been checking out your homesteading stuff too. Very cool and interesting stuff! I am ALWAYS happy to talk about the Link. I am a tad obsessed with that canoe route. I feel like it was a life changing trip for me
Love it!!! ❤ “Tulip Taco” Where are your Tim Tams???
Literally I said to Brian after we came in "We forgot the TimTam slam!" I don't have a good excuse other than I forgot I had them!
Loved it, definitely my thing! Your right it’s very easy just to stay on the couch but once you get up and get out…. No regrets! TFS 😊
Thanks for watching! You are right, ZERO regrets!
God bles you for being so tufe ❤❤❤❤❤

Awesome trip Katrina, can you tell me everything about your canoe, I know its a 14 ft swift, but l am interested in the other details of it. I live 40 minutes away from the landing on opeongo lk and want to purchase a new canoe, l understand what you went through l had a double lung transplant 🫁 in June of 2020,, its all a ordeal to go through. Congratulations 🎊 never give up 👍👍👍
Hi Perry (I hope that assumption is right!) Thanks for watching and for your kind words. Exciting that you are on the hunt for a new canoe, you are lucky to live so close to one of the best paddling destinations in Ontario. I'm glad to hear you are on the mend from your surgery. Life is a gift and it sounds like you are making the best of each day! My canoe is a Swift Prospector 14, it is a Kevlar Fusion with Carbon Kevlar trim and a multi-height seat pod (which I love) it allows you to sit higher or lower in the boat depending on conditions and preference. It weighs about 35lbs and is easy to paddle and portage. Because you live so close to the Park, I would recommend doing what I did, visit the Swift store just outside the Park (beside Algonquin Outfitters) and talk to Karmen, she is a wealth of knowledge and helped me select the best boat for me. I wanted a prospector because of the stability and load capacity, but there are so many options out there, so if you can wait until spring/summer you can go to the store and book a test paddle to try out all of the options before purchasing. Let me know what you land on and happy paddling!
A day in the stand shooting the camera is just as great as shooting the bow, and this video proves that!
It sure does, can't see anything sitting on the couch! Always appreciate you for watching!
Those tacos got me hungryyyyyyyy....
How do I get started with Ice Fishing if I have no experience/ no equipment... Any pointers? Your video has so motivated me to learn Ice Fishing! I am close to Lake Simcoe. Are there Ice Hut rentals available and a guide? When does the season actually start? Thanks in advance.. So many questions :)
Thanks so much for watching! It is awesome that you are so close to Lake Simcoe, part of the struggle is just getting there for us! I would recommend trying to find someone to go out with first so you can see what you need and learn tips and tricks. First, we need some ice! You'll need an ice fishing rod and tackle, and you can buy minnows in a few places around the lake. We have built up our set-up over the years, but you can get going with just a few things. If you don't have a hut or windscreen, go out on a sunny day with no wind, it will be a better experience. Canadian Tire usually has some good deals for equipment. Happy fishing!
Hi, new subscriber here! Love the chicken coop!
Thank you so much for watching! We combined different ideas from others designs we liked and it works well. The only thing we would try to do differently if we were to build another one, is to make it easier to get into, but otherwise it works great!
omg those bunny snuggles! <3

Enjoy your winter break, blessings to you and yours this holiday season.

How did u sterilized the jars? Time etc
I boil them for 10 minutes at a rolling boil.
Always aim for the green zone. If my soap isn't green...it goes for rebatching.
Awww...did you name a chicken after Hugh? Is it because the chicken is forgetful?! 😂 sorry Hugh. Best chicken tractor I've seen!
Yes, he is named after Hugh because he gave him to me as a day-old chick and he was such a cool guy I couldn't resist! The chick wagon was a covid project, but is actually pretty great.

What breed of rabbit is Molly? I have a female who looks just like her.
She is a standard Rex, great breed of rabbit with the softest fur!
Thank you so much! ☺️
Paddle dog's are the best!
Freaking banana's was right, that storm was crazy! Nice trip guy's.
I have a colony setup. Do you recommend removing the nest box at the same age in that situation? Unsure if they'll still be able to nurse.
If you have a colony set up, they will likely have more room to roam and venture out on their own, it is mostly removed at 17 days because it will start to smell and get dirty and by that time they are ready to be out with Mom.
Yay! Garlic 🧄 ❤
Did you plant yours?
A solo paddler is way different than a solo hike. . .you rock!
I can tell you are a very good paddler by the way you use your paddle…you are STRONGER than you think Girl!
The fog is so beautiful! I love these kinds of Autumn days. Your dogs are lovely. They looked a bit puzzled but did fine. They'll get used to canoeing, I'm sure. Just a friendly hint -you had your paddle upside down. If the writing on your paddle is upside down, your paddle is upside down. You can also see it if you look closely at the paddle: imagine a horizontal line through the middle. You'll see that the two halves are unequal. One half is a bit shorter and broader. That's the side that should be facing down to the water. I made the same mistake when I started paddling.
I think I might have almost started to cry, the girls were so cute!!! And I bet a few more trips and they would be just fine!!! 🐕❤
I think so too! Just have to be brave and go for it!
This is the 3rd of your videos I’ve watched, really enjoying your series. Question specifically for this episode and your friend; why canoe why kayak? Personal preference? Big Agnes chair looks super comfy, I have a Helinox Chair Zero.
Thank you for watching, great question! Canoe allows me to pond-hop or portage and travel between lakes easily whereas that is much more difficult (but not impossible) with a kayak. Different boats for different types of travel. The big Agnes is VERY comfortable and honestly is my preference between the two. Happy tripping!
Watched your video on the soap. Looks great but when you use it, does it make alot of bubbles or suds well? Have tried some home made soap in the past and the suds are few and far between. Plz advise.
Yes, it sure does suds up! The recipe is key. You have to be exact with your ingredients and measurement. The suds are the same as any other soap I’ve used.
Thanks so much for getting back to me! We’re looking forward to trying your recipe, thank you. All the best!
Thanks for taking us along on this. Your willingness to share the emotions I'm sure we all felt on our first solo trip is inspiring. Took my first one of these about 6 years ago now and it has become a regular check in with myself and an essential part of the year for me. The scary parts dissipate with time and experience and I find myself looking for it now as part of the challenge.
Thank you so much for watching and your words of encouragement. It was definitely the trip of a lifetime and less scary than I thought!
More about that gorgeous canoe and paddle please 🙏
@@karisumner4709 canoe is a Swift 14 ft Prospector. I absolutely love it! My traditional canoe paddle is a Ray Kettlewell who has since sold to Fishell Paddles. Ray used to live in our area and he made us custom paddles from a cherry tree we took down and milled. My carbon shaft double blade is a Werner (also purchased at Swift). Thanks for watching and happy tripping!
@ the Swift is gorgeous and the paddles just add to the overall package 😍
How was the pizza? We use an outback oven over a wisperlite stove for pizza on short trips but avoid pizza on long trips to save the extra fuel weight. Have never tried striaght on the grill. Figured it would just get blackened on the bottom.
Learned the foil trick from a friend and it works great, we used to find a flat pizza stone which also works great! I love our outback oven, but only really use it to bake desserts. Try the foil trick, works like a charm.
Which way did you like the best?? I made the first recipe but haven't tried it yet. We love kohlrabi. Grow it every year. I have 13 chickens that get the leaves and they love them!! Thank you for your recipes and video.
Quick pickle was delicious and definitely my favourite besides fresh in a stirfry!
Thanks for sharing 😊 such an awesome short adventure is much better than none at all ! You were brave to swim - while I swam at Rosebary and Tim Lakes the last weekend of September and it was refreshing, just in Killarney last weekend it was so icy - no way !
Well that water would be bone-chilling cold! Thank you for watching!

Thank you for the video and for bringing us along on your trip. I spent a lot of time in Algonquin over the 80's, 90’s and 00’s but not since. Now I’m thinking I should get back and try a solo.
Oh yes, you definitely should! I hadn't been in for about 10 years and have reignited my love for this magical place!
Stumbled across your videos but glad I did. Crappy weather but you make the best of it. I’m off to Little Eagle Lake on a solo trip next week so I hope my weather is better. A good video - good video and personalities.
Thank you for watching, hope you have an awesome trip!
Looks like a great trip ! The Barron Canyon is top on my list ! Which access did you start from ?
We actually didn't paddle the Barron Canyon, but hope to one day!
The canyon is unbelievably high at the bottom looking up too. Kinda dizzying
Ok, we need to do this!!! Next summer?? ⛺️
Made this recipe last year and loved it! Thanks so much. I’m going to do the same recipe again this year but I want to play with using natural dyes (potentially beet root powder and nettle leaf powder). Does the recipe need to change to accommodate adding these in? Thanks
You shouldn't need to adjust the recipe to accommodate adding those ingredients. Glad you enjoyed the soap, I have to make more soon too!
listen to archaix please
Sheep breeder in Southern New Mexico: I understand the conundrum. I handle the breeding and raising of the sheep. My husband handles the freezer side of things. The other night , I had to make some decisions on reducing the ewe flock. It involved picking 4 ewes to balance out the genetics. One of the ewes had a hoof defect that prevents her from breeding or being sold. To quote one breeder" I don't breed for the sake of breeding, I breed to improve the next generation and cull to not create problems in the future."
That is such a hard job, but it is important to keep your herd healthy. Thanks for watching and sharing your story.
I’m crying and this is life. I love this video because it’s real. Folks need to know these are animals in your body. Bless you.
I agree, thanks for watching and for your support.
Say a prayer over them for providing for you and thank them and tell them about heaven, that might give you some peace emotionally
I do thank them and talk to them as they leave to comfort them and let them know I am grateful.
I lived at my sister's farm, they did farm kills. Whenever the butcher came,I had to leave. I was the one responsible for feeding and caring for them. I felt like Benedict Arnold.
It is really hard, worth it to have such healthy food, but so hard.
You know what? The best keepers of animals are the ones with the big hearts. You are the type of person who's worthy of consuming meat because you know exactly what the price is. I wanted to say it gets easier with time but then you said this is your second processing day. I want to say still that it gets better but never totally easy.
I feel like the older I get the harder it gets. I really struggled with my rabbit butchering day as well, lots of tears, but know the reality of the alternative and prefer one hard day amongst so many joyful ones. Thank you for the support!
Grim Reaper is my least favorite job. I'm often the one retrieving the animals and bringing them to the dispatch area and it's definitely not my favorite.
I've watched most of your videos and you are an inspiration and honest about the realities of living this kind of life.
