Usually canto speaker try to slant their Cantonese to speak mandarin. You’re slanting your Cantonese to try to speak Taishanese. Admirable 👍

I'm toisan speaking (though by blood I'm ½ hoiping as well by my mom's side), your dialect seems to be a bit closer to my mom's dialect. But having spoken to other toisan/hoiping people, I realized how much of a variation in dialects there can be. For instance, you guys seem to say hoisanWa whereas in my dialect, the "W" is closer to a "V" and the "ee" sound for me is closer to an "ae" or something (no idea how to romanize stuff). Really cool to hear young people like me (or at least I tell myself I'm still young) speaking toisan dialect. I do kung fu and we practice out of a senior home that our Chinese society falls under. I'm one of only 2 people in our entire club who can speak with the residents - none of the other younger students can understand what the nice old ladies are saying, so I've become a translator haha Keep up this cool content!

Although my Ba was born in Baisha, Taishan, I've never really had to speak Taishanese. But I do speak Cantonese fluently as my mom was born in HK and my Pow Pow was a Guangzhou native. My Gong Gong who was born in Kaiping but raised in Suva, Fiji spoke more English than Cantonese. I do understand Taishanese as I had to interpret for my Ye Ye and Ma Ma when I was in grade school. From Grades 3 to 7 I went to Chinese school om mondays after my regular Catholic schooling. We were taught with Cantonese textbooks published in SF!
