    I built one in 2012. It worked great. it was on a little 15 ft mast, but the FTB and gain made it shine. it stayed up until a tree fell on it in 2019, destroying it. Who cares about the sag. it wont have any bearing on performance. My MA5B shipped with the wrong hardware to assemble it, Be happy yours didn't.

    I am it the process of assembling this antenna. and my understanding of the tuning is based on where in the 20 meter band you prefer. in my case i prefer the upper phone frequencies (14.300) so i adjusted both element 1 & 3 to 7 inches DIM A & DIM B according to chart A . . If I am reading this correctly, regardless of what end of the band you choose both element 1 & 3 need to be the same according to chart A. As far as element 2 goes in order to get 205.5 inches i did not make the adjust on the ends (EE). instead, I needed to shorten the entire length by 1 1/2 inches and did so by simply loosening the hose clamps (411) and slid both sides in 3/4 of an inch. . . . . I look forward to any input or opinion that anyone has on this. Gary KC1OXM New Hampshire

    the Mic setting should be 40% the compression should not be over 2, the meter on the MFJ 998 will not read over 100 watts, it’s plus 10 when you are over 100 watts, 80 watts 800 90 watts 900 if that make sense, your 998 and watt meter were both showing the same thing W4TSH

  • @Michael-DE-VO1OP
    @Michael-DE-VO1OP 3 года назад

    When you want to check your power out, go into rtty and key up. Look at your amp's and MFJ-998's meters as a comparason. If your seeing around a kw, that's your peak with that drive level. You can also do a good whistle in SSB and again look at the amp's and tuner's meters. I have the ALS1300 and I learned the hard way not to drive it with no more than the required amount to reach 1kw. In my case about 50W. Be very careful, the als1300/1306 is a kwSSB, 500CW and 400 digi amp. See my vid on the bench test I did and other 1300 operations. 73: Mike DE VO1AX

    @richb.4374 3 года назад

    To see voice peaks on SSB you need a very fast peak reading wattmeter. The large MFJ meter is pretty accurate and showing you with nice 1kw voice peaks. This is what this amp should do so you're not doing anything wrong. Ameritron recommends running the amp no higher than 1200 watts pep output for it to stay clean. These amps can do more, but your signal will be dirty if you push it too hard. Keep doing what you're doing.

      So true. There is a guy (won't bother with his call sign) on 40 meters who overdrives his ALS-1306 with his FTdx-101 who doesn't understand the concept of ensuring his TX parametric is set properly, overdrives his mic and the amp itself. His signal is almost 10KHz wide and interferes with two nets with splatter. IDK, make sure you have everything aligned for your TX Audio settings. Have a friend get on the air with you (maybe two, one within 200 miles and one 1000 miles) get on the air, test your audio settings and signals with the amp on and off. Remember, you don't need to push 1200W all the time :) use what you need to complete the QSO. Enjoy the amp.

    Hi David, I run the exact same set up. I've only had the Amp about a month and have some of the same questions. I guess I'm wondering if the mic gain solved your problem. I don't generally use the alc.. I know it's what everyone does... I've experimented with it but usually just don't. I do run the mic gain much higher.. 40 to 70.. depending on if I'm doing dx or rag chew. My signal reports and audio quality have been good. I also see watt readings on the 998 averaging 200 something when the amplifier meter is reading 700. I'm just wondering if you've found any answers.. I've been extremely happy with the amplifier so far. Thanks, Roy

    Hi David, Welcome to ham radio! You have a problem many hams would love to have! You can afford equipment many experienced hams can only dream of. Most of us learn equipment one piece at a time with plenty of time in between each purchase to learn things one by one. I would suggest you turn off that beautiful amplifier off and break out the manual for your IC-7300 first. Learn how adjust mic gain, compression and ALC. I WILL cut to the chase for you however. The problem you’re having is you are already using the ALC control on the amplifier before you have established basic settings with your 7300 and your amp. You should NOT be using ALC control on the amp at all initially.The ALC is meant to turn your power down in the event of operator error. I understand there are not many good explanations of how the ALC works even in the Ameritron manual. When you turn the ALC on the amp all the way up to a 10 you are effectively turning the ALC OFF. Forget the blinking light at this time. Clue: you have the ALC set to 2 so it is making your power decision settings on the 7300 meaningless. That’s what the ALC is meant to do! Turn off the ALC by turning the knob all the way up to 10. Turn your mic gain all the way down or OFF. Use FM or RTTY mode to generate a constant carrier. Start with 25 watts. Use your MFJ peak reading watt meter. You should be using a dummy load. Put the amp in standby and push the mic button to key the 7300. You can also use the transmit button just under the power button on your 7300. With the amp in standby adjust your radio output to 25 watts. Turn the amp “On” and check your output power. Gradually turn up the power on the 7300 til the amp is putting out 1200 watts which on that amp is the maximum LINEAR output. Now you can switch back to SSB. Turn mic gain up to 65%, compression at 2 or 3. Now when you are transmitting, speaking into your mic, your amp will be swinging up to the max 1200 watts. NOW you can use the ALC control on the amp to turn DOWN your power swing to whatever power level you desire. If you want to put out a clean signal and make your amp last a long time you can turn the ALC level down to where you are swinging 1000-1100 watts. When you change bands you will need to repeat this process as power output will change on various bands. Run your equipment very conservatively until you gain more experience. That amp will easily exceed the 1500 watt legal limit so keep an eye on that watt meter! Hope that helps! 73’s catch you on the air, Your friend, Vic AE0IN Parker, Colorado

    If you are calling cq cq cq the first thing you are supposed to do is turn the mic gain and processor wide open. 59 59 say again? In the last year or so scientist have come up with a marvel formula called Ohms Law. Every ham alive knows this by heart. Its amazing because it allows you to calculate power out using voltage and current and you can estimate efficiency based on the device you are using. Voltage times current times efficiency in percent. Example: 50 volts x 50 amps = 2500 watts INPUT, 2500 watts x 50% efficiency = 1250 watts output. That amp has 8 MRF 150's. Figure about 150 watts per device plus or minus a few watts. 150 watts x 8 devices = 1200 watts out. In SSB you need a peak reading meter or oscilloscope to catch the peak of the power envelope you are actually getting too. This is incredible easy to see on an O Scope and you can see that as soon as you utter anything into the mic you get full power out. It's much harder to see on a watt meter because of the meter movement itself is slow reacting. Special circuitry must be put into place to drive the meter quickly enough to see PEP. You will never see the correct power out in SSB using an average reading meter.(you hear people talking and sustaining their voice to get the meter to read higher) Watching your video its obvious that the MFJ is pretty close to being correct. (Mic Gain) Watch your ALC and never go out of range there. (Processor) On the compression meter stay below about 6db of compression. It doesn't take much. It might not be a bad idea to invest in a tune up pecker if you cannot use the radio to do this. A gent named Dan Cox in Houston Texas that talks on 3870 at night or 3900 in the mornings makes these if you are interested. K8woz. Tell him JimmyWatt sent you. 73's and good luck
