Mimnat was born out of a burning desire to restore the degraded Spekboom thicket in South Africa, and to bring back the wildlife that used to roam it.
Can you imagine MILLIONS of antelope running on the horizon… almost like the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti.
Now imagine instead of wildebeest, it’s MILLIONS of springbok.
Well believe it or not, that used to be a reality about 200 - 300 years ago in the Karoo in South Africa.
We have an online shop, where you can purchase with purpose, because every single penny of profit from your purchases goes straight into restoring nature!
Yep, we’re talking about replanting the massively degraded Spekboom thicket, restoring eroded soil, and helping wildlife reclaim their habitats.

Miniature Landscape/Penjing - Spekboom/Dwarf Jade
Просмотров 43214 дней назад
This is my first attempt at making a miniature Spekboom/Dwarf Jade landscape. The 4 Spekboom cuttings in the front are from a small leave Spekboom, and they were just small cuttings when I started this at the beginning of last summer. Had to do some drastic pruning to get the ratios correct. When I was a beginner I didn't think about rations, I just pruned. When you keep ratios in mind you will...

Does SIZE Matter? Propagating Spekboom/Dwarf Jade Cuttings
Просмотров 177Месяц назад
I found a Spekboom all chopped up next to a dumpster at the dumpsite, and couldn't just let it die. We have to propagate and try to revive this beast! When propagating a Portulacaria Afra / Dwarf Jade / Spekboom, you always need to watch out for overwatering. Especially with big cuttings. Large cuttings only get watered once every two weeks. All of them are outside, in a shady area that receive...

MimNat - Mimic Nature and Restoring the Spekboom Thicket
Excellent video, thank you. The trees look great. What soil mixture do you use in the development stages? Keep the videos coming, I do enjoy the content.
Thanks a lot! With these, I just used a mix of compost, seedling mix (just sifted compost really), normal garden soil and a bit of sand. The reason being, the garden soil adds micro organism life that isnt in the compost, and will also help the compost retain a bit more water. The compost will help to make it drain better and not get waterlogged.
Awesome video!! I have a Mame monkey thorn. It is also leafing put for some reason. I found they are really resistant to root pruning. Once again, Awesome video 👍🍁
Yea, I must say the senegalia species handles it way better than the vachellia!
@MimNat Do you have any tips for me as I am struggling with root rot with my spekboom? It's in "the Boons mix," and all this rain isn't helping. I'm keeping it covered, but do you know how I could prevent it in the future even though it's in a well draining soil.
@@ChillGuyBonsaitheir natural habitat is semi-arid to arid. So if you already have it in well draining soil, then the only other option is to build small greenhouse for them!😅 Thats what I did when I lived in an area that also got a lot of rain. I built a small greenhouse with a few poles and those see through plastic sheets people put on roofs sometimes
@MimNat great idea 💡 👍 I'll see what I can build before midnight because it's raining tomorrow morning 🌄
Weereens great video. Baie dankie, en doen update oor die flat top wat jy beplan.
Yes hou dop, ek gaan die week dit afneem 💪💪
Nice.were are you based?
Looks amazing 👏 I can't believe that came from cuttings. I'm currently trying to germinate bald cypress seeds as it is mid winter right now. It's great that you focus on the indigenous plants/trees of South africa 🇿🇦. Keep up the good work!!!
Thanks for the continuous support!
@@MimNat All I ask is remember me when you're famous 💚💪
Hi again, how long do the big cuttings like yours to root?and do you need cuttings with leaves to root a cuttings?
Hi! Funnily enough, I haven't really thought about how long it takes. I usually see new growth in about a month. Some take longer, and some will be faster, depending on the climate. I had a few cuttings that didn't have any leaves on, and after a year they didn't grow any leaves., but I also have had cuttings that didn't have leaves, grow. So I tend to try and keep leaves on, but generally, if it's from a branch that had leaves on at the time of making the cutting, it will most probably grow.
@@MimNat thank you very much
Hello thanks for the great video, jow long do we need it to grow wildly before selecting branches?
Depends on how wild it's growing/how big your grow bag/pot is. I would say the answer is to let it grow until you think you have enough branches to choose your main branches! 1 growing season will definitely be enough. Hope that makes sense?
Hi Mimnat. I chopped one of my Pafra’s in half. I really do hope it develops some branches on top of the chop and sides. My question is, how can you encourage branch development? Is fertilizing enough for that? I know branches don’t magically grow overnight, sadly🥲😂
Haha no problem! I also wondered that when I started out! The trick to getting branch development from a young small plant is time! Let it grow in a big bag or in the soil if you can (no frost areas) and just prune it a bit back every now and then!
Thank you for the great content, I am following you on TikTok as well. Any videos about Camel Thorn or Umbrella Thorn Bonsai trees would be much appreciated.
Thanks for the support! I tried camel thorns a few years ago, but maaaaaannn they don't wanna be a bonsai! They die very easily when working on the roots and they take for ever to grow, even in large soil bags! I currently have 1 umbrella thorn, but it's in a 5L bag and im just letting it grow wild at the moment. The best thorn trees for bonsai are your monkey thorns (white and black) and the knob thorn. Their barks are awesome and they can be trained into an umbrella shape. I'll make a video about them if you'd like?
@MimNat Thank you so much for the response. I am still in the process of gathering as much information regarding the Camel thorn and Umbrella thorn, and every bit helps. My aim is an Acacia tipe thorn tree with the flat top. Would appreciate the monkey thorn tree video. Keep the content coming👌
Great video 🪴👍. What fertilizers do you use? I'm not sure what to buy for spring (I'm switching to the boons mix this sping). Once again, the video was very informative 👌
Anything high in nitrogen will work. I'm more of a natural fertilizer type of guy, so I have used the all-purpose organic tree fertilizing pellets as well as guano fertilizer. Thanks for your continuous support and feedback 💪
Super nice!! Giving Olives some love too!
Great video 💚. This will really help me, and thank you for listening to my recommendation. Have a wonderful evening!!🍁

SPEKtacular, good one😂

Yea, patience is one of the many things it teaches us!
Your spek boom looks great👍. Do you have wild olives? If so, could you perhaps do a video on pruning because im really struggling to develop the branches.
Hey, yea i do have a few wild olives. I will try my best to make a video this weekend
@MimNat thank you. You got yourself a new subscriber!!

thanks bro, i was just working on my dwarf jade plant and was wondering how gentle i should be while cutting it back
No problemmo! 💪 Glad you enjoyed and got value!
Your camera quality is awesome!
Hey, thanks!
I am liking all of your videos!
Awesome video! I have an addiction to these trees. I live in Europe, but am originally from Aruba. Aruba is hardiness zone 13. I want to plant one of these Pafra trees into the ground in Aruba and see if it flowers there. From my knowledge, they only flower in South Africa in nature. Is it true that once potted in whatever pot, whether it’s a bonsai pot or a regular nursery one - it won’t flower?
Thanks for the support! I had a Spekboom in a 5L bag that did flower once. I can't say for a fact what causes it to flower, but what I did notice in the field and the specific one in the soil bag that flowered, was that it was kind of suffering. Leaves were shriveled up (I forgot to water it), full sun and hot weather. Same for the Spekboom I saw flowering in nature, it's always after a very hot and dry period. And it makes sense to me then why it don't flower for us bonsai people, cause we water it regularly 😂 In summary, I believe it's: 👉Time of the year 👉Conditions (hot, warm, dry)
@@MimNat thank you for your reply!! I shared your videos on instagram through another account name! Truly awesome channel you have. 😁😁
I call it ‘Pafra Tree’
When I first read the word, it was quite a tong twister. I called it the portiSomething afra 😂
