Hi, a nice introduction to trailer maintenance. The only thing I'd add is checking the side walls of tyres of little used trailers for perishing. I've noticed over years that tyres can be wasted a long time before the tread is used up if they don't get used regularly. I suspect it is something to do with the compounds heating up while rolling under load does something the tyre to keep it in good condition. That's my tuppence ha'penny anyway. Cheers Al

Why the hell not timber spline and glue *all the seams*, rescrew, double epoxy sheath the lot?. You get a dry bilge, a bulletproof hull, nothing but antifouling and topside paint FOREVER. Yeah, I know, not purist, traditional. But hey. Do you really want to be redoing cotton caulking for the rest of your life? There comes a time in the life of every timber boat when it is either sheath-over or burn. Your call, of course, depending on past damage, present finances, and projected future effort.

Hi, I posted a positive comment a couple of days ago but I now have a question. I ordered a replacement POLE PIECE as I broke the original trying to remove to get to the the top bearing, in your video I don't think you cover the removal or replacement. The replacement POLE PIECE BDE-868141-00.A5 from Miles seems too tight, the top of the armature diameter is 6.5mm and the pole piece is 6mm and I've just broken that one getting it on. I've ordered another so do I need to ease the hole in the pole piece buy drilling it to 6.5mm? Any advice would be appreciated before I break the second replacement !

I have just done this job. You need to press it home with your thumb carefully as they are brittle. The shaft is splined so you are creating slight spines in the pole piece as you push it home. If you have to, use a 10mm wood dowelling and using a hammer tap it very gently. Softly softly is the key. Good luck.

    • @EvansBoatwork

No. These are parallel sided splines in a sliding fit, not wedge shaped hammered in. Carvel planking edges when first built fit together perfectly, which the splines now do, just eliminated the caulking seam.

    • @EvansBoatwork

Epifanes varnish. The quantity of thinner depends but any paint or varnish manufacture will have guides as to what and how much thinner is acceptable. Also needle size, temperature etc.

As you can tell by the time stamps of my comments. I can share with you some techniques to allow such a small RF meter to show good deflection at a distance for HF. You would need to feed the recrifying circuit via an inductor from the small antenna and it would have to be tuned to resonance. It is tricky and I haven't seen other radio enthusiasts do it yet. You have inspired me to demonstrate such a principal. It is tricky but with the appropriate magnetic material we can use an external magnetic field to tune to resonance. I'm not a crusty ham saying I know it all I am an experimental ham that hasn"t yet shared my knowhow. The differential sides of both the input and output need to be fed at opposite ends. Imagine, unlike a common mode choke over a ferrite that has two parralel conductors, we feed the two parralel conductors from the opposite sides which actually adds to the coherence of both the E and B fields. Two opposing currents running in opposite direction actually add together.

👍I think you worked it out. These Pixie kits transmit a very low level carrier in RX mode, just above the TX frequency. It is because the TX power output transistor is being used as a multiplier (mixer) in RX mode.

I've just got hold of a redcrest here in NZ of the same vintage 1979. It had been in storage for years but didn't have any leaks or patches. The rear valve had been replaced with a newer type used on the more recent Avons. Had a slow leak in the inflatable seat valve. A squirt of WD40 loosened up the spring and is now sealed. I had a similar Redcrest as a tender to my sailing vessel for 6 years which survived many a bashing on rocks, shingle, concrete piers and attacks by local kids in various parts of the globe hell bent on its destruction.

Well, "back in the day" (horrible phrase), Elu weren't just "relatively good quality" - they really were the best routers on the market. BTW, the MOF96e shown was an 8mm router not a 1/4in, although many of thiose supplied in the UK came with a 1/4in (6.35mm) collet instead. Bearings for the MOF96 are still under a tenner in 2023, so not really a killer if they fail, but you do need a bit of technical nous to do the bearing swap.
