    I'm applying for drama school atm. When I was a lot younger, I was a child actor at the RSC for a season. This was obviously more than five years ago, but at the same time it was a pretty big production and genuinely taught me a lot and I think it does show that I have genuine theatre experience. Is this something to write about or is it not relevant?

    For a long time reading the script for class was dreadful. Doing the real work, was just that.. work. In the last month I broke through with some of my acting and process.. now I read script for fun because I see the immense value in it. Slightly embarrassing to admit, yes, but when the work has now changed to fun.. what a shift!

    About the experience part of the statement, im about to finish sixth form and have only taken a class for drama and took it in secondary school but have been practicing my skills in other means such as monologues or pieces with friends. Is there anything I can do to make up for that in the statement? I plan on applying to an undergraduate course and have looked ar multiple acting universities.

    • @lmccoachinguk
      @lmccoachinguk Месяц назад

      Just by saying that you've been rehearsing and exploring text with friends in the run up to auditions is a really good indication of your passion and dedication to being an actor. Not everyone will have loads of experience and that is ok. Think of your personal statement as prompts for the audition panel to ask questions and have a discussion with you during the interview stage. The personal statement isn't going to be the thing that gets you into drama school, your performance will.

    Really enjoyed this discussion. Lots of good points! I would definitely agree with the idea of going into the audition with a sense of detachment, and not fearing rejection. I always have this motto ‘let the universe come to you’. Doesn’t mean don’t try or do the work or give it your all; but it’s funny how when you are slightly detached that is when you get what you most want. Thanks again, Arthur

      @lmccoachinguk 6 месяцев назад

      Hey! Usually if you're sending in an application for something they will give you instruction about whether they want a monologue or short film. Make sure to read the instructions fully and if you have doubts then contact them directly. I haven't thought about doing a video about applying for scholarships as thats not really something I know very much about sadly.

    You mentioned that they might not take people who are too young. I’m 36 and applying for pretty much every drama school for the 2025 intake. I’m just worried that I’m too old and that they’ll over look me because of my age (even though they say there’s no upper age limit on all their websites). Do you have any advice for older students wanting to get in? Is it actually possible or am I giving myself false hope?

    • @lmccoachinguk
      @lmccoachinguk 6 месяцев назад

      Never be discouraged on being a more mature student - if the talent, ability and work ethic are there, age is but a number. I've had students in the same age bracket and they can be a joy to work with. The benefits of training and graduating a little older is that you will be in a completely different casting bracket to the people you train alongside and everyone else in the country that is graduating at the same time - you have an edge and a USP, lean into it. Consider the fact that you will be spending 3 years with a cohort who will likely be younger than you and although the school will have no issue with that at all, you may feel that connecting with a group who are at a different stage in life might be something to think about.

      @@lmccoachinguk Thank you for taking the time to fully respond to me, that's super kind of you! I managed to get in touch with most of the big drama schools in London, and they pretty much said the same thing as you. Guildhall has someone in their BA at the age of 33, and another guy who graduated last year at the age of 43, it's incredible. I love that they're so open to older students. I look at it from the perspective that we're all there to train and learn together, regardless of age. Plus, it adds to the overall dynamic of each performance. I don't mind that they'd be younger than me, I always go into things with an open mind because we all come from different walks of life. Thank you again! :)

      @@lmccoachinguk Thank you so much!! Yes I can say this definitely is something I want, I have only just learnt properly about Drama school training and it is my first time applying after a very last minute decision in December as I wasn't feeling university was for me. So since all this is new to me, I have not stopped researching and watching videos like this and your videos have been super helpful!! I will definitely take a breath before I join the zoom call and listen to what they say, I'm just hoping that I fully understand the context of the redirection if that makes sense? Like if they tell me to lower the stakes, then to what extent to I lower the stakes? Do I turn my emotional and raw monologue into a comedic one where the character is so blasé and uncaring? Or do I still make it natural and believable and still be the same character I have created but with different thoughts? Or do I just completely change the whole characterisation to suit the redirections and really do something different as a whole new character? There's just so many questions and thoughts running through my head!! I'm also just so new to this all so I really don't know what to expect, what they expect and to what extent I should take on the redirections, I literally cannot sleep at night thinking about it!! But thank you so much for your reply and the videos!! They have helped put some of my anxieties at rest!! Hello! Thank you for this awesome video! I have a question - what would you advise someone who is unable to go to drama school (because they can't afford the fees and living costs without being able to work) - in terms of getting themselves as well trained as possible? Would doing a combination of Foundation type courses (with a drama school), part time courses and private coaching enhance skills to a good enough level in the absence of full time conservatoire training do you think?

    • @lmccoachinguk
      @lmccoachinguk 7 месяцев назад

      You've totally hit the nail on the head! Shorter courses or even part time can help massively with you beginning to develop an Actor's process. You'll also be training alongside people who are at the same level and in the same position as you so you grow your circle of lovely people! Private coaching is also great because its bespoke to you instead of trying to cater to a larger group. In the end, there are so many ways of entering into the industry. There are wildly successful Actors who haven't train and there are wildly successful Actor who have - don't see training as the be all and end all. Persevere and enjoy the ride!

    Would you say the same applies to monologues you use in each subsequent round of the application process for one year ? Specifically, I'm wanting to do a different contemporary speech in my final recall (I actually haven't yet had my particular instructions for the last recall but I'm assuming a contemporary monolgue will be amongst what I'll be expected to deliver ;) ). Is that a good idea to use a different one to earlier rounds would you say, or should I stick to what's got me as far as the final recall?

      Great question! I would say unless the school has specifically asked for a new speech - go in with your original material. They liked what you were doing in your 1st round so they want to be able to see that again. You could always learn a new contrasting speech and have it as back up. But like I say, if you aren’t asked for new material for the next round then stick with what you have already! ☺️

    • @Pixietoria
      @Pixietoria 7 месяцев назад

      @@lmccoachinguk Thanks for the response! I've already prepared a contrasting one so I have it as an option either way. In my second round the instruction was that we could use a new speech OR the same one as the first round and it was up to us. I chose to go with the original one for the reasons you say. I am mostly concerned that I might look "lazy" or limited to use it a third time. But having a back up one covers that I suppose. Something to pull out of the bag if asked. Thanks for your input! :)
