    I just bought my first featherweight, also a 1940, and I’m having a ball learning all about her. The lady who sold her to me is 83, and she remembers her mother making dresses for her on that machine. It’s in really good shape overall. No rust or anything. But her decals are a little worn and she needs a good polishing. She sews such a perfect stitch! I took her to the guild’s sew day on Monday and one of the ladies who knows about them was giving me advice. She even oiled it for me. I love how you went over all the little parts. It's a brand new machine to you, and it's also very precious. You handled it so well. I love antiques, and my knowledge of painted items from those days is not huge, but I do recall that lots of the glossy looking items tended to have a type of clear coat on top and the designs underneath were often a type of decal. So you were wise to be ever-so gentle with wiping the black shiny surface, as those little spots are no-doubt part of your little machine's personality. They've come with age and all that love and use. It's great all the fixings appear to be in really great shape! I'm excited to see what you create first. I'm also secretly excited to know what you name it! She looks like a Shelby to me. But I bet there are some names dancing 'round in your head. If I recall, we both have this in common, that we name our things. LOL! I still do it and you just know even my little dog doesn't get called by her normal name most of the time! I hope you're having a beautiful weekend. What's blooming out there for you? We are seeing the daffodils coming to life everywhere. They are so cute. I got a bunch of miniature pastel painted buckets and I'm going to drill some holes in the bottom and make them little planters. Then I'm going to hang them from the little bannister we have outside with colourful little flowers. I need to find out what kinds of flowers will thrive best on that side of the house. Take care and will look forward to see what you do next! XOXO

    I don’t understand how you can sew on the machine, or is it just me ? The body part should be to your right , on this machine it’s to your left , the computer is too ?! You pulled off cover , the machine was as it should be !

      @knittykatstudio 9 месяцев назад

      I don't have a cover on this machine or a computer. It's just me directly in front of the machine and my camera is looking over my right shoulder.

    Keen to find out if you could get it working. If so, I'd also be very keen to learn some trouble-shooting tips for sergers/overlockers as there are quite a few of us buying second hand machines.

    • @knittykatstudio
      @knittykatstudio 9 месяцев назад

      Happy to say, I did get it working. I made an update video that I posted after this one. I love second hand machines because of the lower cost, and good quality. I've learned so much from watching youtube videos and from facebook groups on the care and repair of some older machines. The fb groups are great, because you can post a pic or video showing the issue you're having with your machine. Usually someone can help or explain how to fix it in the comments. Thank you for watching and for your comment. Happy sewing!!

      I'm sorry you're having trouble with your machine. Do you think it can be repaired? You can take it to a repair shop, or if you're comfortable you can open it up and see what's going on inside. I found a hand needle and thread caught inside the handwheel, of a Brother machine I thrifted. After I pulled it out it ran fine. You never know, but it really is a good machine if you can get it working. Thanks for your comment and for watching my video. 🙂

    I still have my Bernette by Bernina 334DS from the early 90's. It still runs great. You can still buy feet and knives for it. Did you know? Juki made the sergers for Bernina. I think that you had a good find there!

    • @knittykatstudio
      @knittykatstudio 10 месяцев назад

      No, I didn't know Juki made sergers for Bernina. Sounds like it will be a good quality machine then. That's nice you still have your Bernette serger and it's still going strong. Gives me hope for this one 😁 I've just received one of the spool holder parts and I should get the other one in a couple of days. I'm excited to get it going. No, not for me. I wouldn't look twice at that machine. All those buttons and obviously digital components. 😖 Vintage machines for me every time hands down. I own four and adore my beautiful old machines, 3 Singers (oldest a 99 Hand crank) and one Janome, the newest but all solid metal from the 80s.

    • @knittykatstudio
      @knittykatstudio 10 месяцев назад

      I agree there's nothing like vintage machines! I have 3 singers from the 50's and one treadle machine from the early 20's, but it needs to be refinished. I enjoy computerized machines, but there's something very special about a vintage machine. 🙂 Thanks so much for watching!!

    I don’t have one of these but if you open it up, there are a couple of places to check inside. 1)Most of these used a lever or rocking mechanism to move the needle bar side to side as it zigzags. Those are generally oiled and over time the oil gets sticky and can prevent that mechanism from rocking. 2)Since it did start changing stitches, you may have to check the cams on the inside to make sure they continue to move freely. Cams are generally lubricated with grease. The cams are connected to the rocking mechanism from 1) with a series of connectors. And those connectors may need oiling too. Just a thought for you. Good luck! For $25, you got a steal.

      @knittykatstudio 10 месяцев назад

      That's a good idea. I'll open it and see what's going on in there. I bet it's pretty gunked with old oil. Thank you for the info and for watching! 🙂
