New Norfolk is a small town north of Hobart. Originally called Elisabeth Town, it was re named by the people who were re settled after the British government closed Norfolk Island. Its remote position made it unsustainable.

It's that time of year when the Lorikeets gather to celebrate the apple destroying ceremony. Notice how they don't actually eat the apple but only squeeze the sweet juice out of it before discarding it, which is then eaten by other birds.

Threshing the Wheat

This farm grows thatching straw as a main crop. The wheat is actually a by product. The straw has to be threshed with the old method so as not to break the straw. Broken straw is no use to a thatcher. Each January, the threshing machine arrives and work can begin.

Has any one found out why does the dragon fly nymphs has small wings on their backs? What are they use for? This may be a good evidence on how wings evolve in dragon flies, if they have a purpose. I mean, it is logical to think they are there so that when they develop into dragonflies this is the area where the wings will be made. But what if it does have a purpose. Caterpillars dont need any wing parts.
Hi, Thanks for the question. As I am given to understand, it is these cases where the wings are formed, as you say. Also, you are correct in that caterpillars do not have this wing case on their backs. Caterpillars are different though insomuch as they "break down" into a "soup" and re form into the butterfly, which when hatched the wings are folded along its length. The dragonfly does not "break down" to re form, it is an active hunter right up to the hatching day. So the wings grow into the wing cases (like a tightly folded parachute) which allows them to form ready for hatching. There is some useful info here. www.dragonflyfacts.com/dragonfly-life-cycle/
@@studio12archive60 Yes, I know the different in their metamorphosis. I just wanted to know if any one has studied the behavior of the nymphs to find out if that wing case actually has any use to the nymphs. If they could use it to make noise under water or other type of behavior.

Fish here back in the1980's with my young son. He managed to cast a dry fly to a rising brownie and caught it - his first. Loads of small brownies, a loverly place to fish.
Your son would have been hooked for life with that experience. Great stuff. It is a great location but the day we filmed -- you can see, it could have been better. lol
@@studio12archive60 He was hooked for life! The day we went was in August and was a barmy day with a gentle breeze. We took the boat out and had great fun catching loads of small brownies. Later we tried to fish from the bank but wherever we went we were plagued with midgets. Thanks for your video - brought back loads of memories.
is john batley still shooting pigeons.is he still alive.
Yes he is still with us and does still shoot pigeon but I think has something to do with the BASC or a similar body, as a consultant

I was fascinated from the start. But I became double-fascinated when I saw how well he shoots while walking on two sticks .
As a horologist and machinist, I found the small section where he created a clock interesting. That same clock in the video was another English clockmaker's creation, the H1, by John Harrison. Another man who desperately tried to help his own country of England, and for nearly 40 years was screwed over and never awarded his recognition for solving the longitude calculation problem. England has a thing for shitting on and impoverishing brilliant people

Thank you for your comment. Quite a hard way to make a living back in the day. Always having to there when the tide is low, day or night. Believe it or not, these two old boys are still going strong and demonstrating their basket making skills at local country shows.

This Documentary was part of series including a ship builder a castle maker and horse breeder from what I remember do anyone know where to see the others. I have been looking for years this is the first one I found
Hi Amy. You are right, it was part of a series. I was only contracted to produce this one. It was a ten part series which I think was called , "The Masters". Like you, I have not been able to find the others. Thank you for your comment though.
Thank you for quick response. I loved the series and saw a few times on cable maybe history or A&E in the states about 10-15 years ago on Saturday mornings. This one was a favorite.
I had cute little woodmouse in the garden back in the winter, the cameras would catch them nipping in & out of the hedgehog feeding station taking one kitten biscuit at a time. I even caught a female carrying her pups in her mouth moving them to another nest. Sadly I think some horrid person living round here put poison down as I had to take one to a local wildlife rescue after seeing it on camera wobbling, moving slow & unsteady on their feet, the rescue suspected poisoning, what sort of vile human being could do something like that. Last sighting of one was back in March & I never saw one on any camera footage from the garden again, So sad seeing that poor little mouse floating in the water, there's so many dangers out there for all wildlife & not all down to natural predators but lots of man made dangers too.
Hi. Thank you for your comment. Much appreciated. Sadly, mice do tend to get into places that we sometimes don't want. Such is life as they say. However, I am surprised that you have not seen more Wood mice on your cameras. Being low in the food chain and fast breeders, they are very numerous and I would have thought that other mice would have taken up the territory that has been vacated. I hope that you keep feeding. They are bound to re appear.
Deryck and Don made a putcher especially so that my wife could take a photo for a WI calendar entry. That must have been 20 or more years ago.
I believe they are still going strong. Glad that it brought back some happy memories.
@@studio12archive60 Both happy and poignant memories, as I lost my wife to cancer 15 years ago. PS As I recall, the theme of the calendar was local crafts and, to meet the entry deadline, I had to dash over to Keynsham to deliver the photo by hand. I'm pleased to say it was used.

A hard life for a few salmon nothing like that going up river now.putchers would be full of plastic bags and sewage unfortunately. Glad they made this film while there was still life in the river.
Hi Robin. Thank you for your comment. It was indeed a hard life and as you say, the depletion of Salmon stocks has had great affect on this traditional way. This film has now become an important historical record.
My wife bought Archie's book for me as a Xmas present back in the 70 s, them days it was the bible for pigeon shooting. Fond memories of wonderful days in the field.
Yes indeed. I got my copy in the 60's, LOL. Still have it now as no doubt you do. A lot of what he said then, still applies today.

When I was a kid living on the farm, dad got me two books, pigeon shooting and game keeping by Mr Coates, I read those books many times over.
