Ngl, kind of a bait-and-switch tease with that Alone comparison, Miles. Nobody enjoys that kind of a disappointment, and I feel like your videos are above it. If you'd just mentioned Alone, and done the hard pass, I'd say it's your usual wry sense of humor; it's the use of the thumbnail *and* title too that leaves a bad taste. Moving past that, Elephants is one of my favorite episodes of Suchet's Poirot. It's opening is one of the most skillfully executed hooks ever put to a mystery and the production values throughout are so cinematic, you'd hardly be able to tell this was made for television. I feel like the arguments about Celia's blandness are overstated; I still found her an interesting enough character to follow (although admittedly that could just be my fondness for Vanessa Kirby) even if she doesn't have much agency, but then again, you had the book character to compare to so you may very well be right. From what you've said, it definitely feels like she's been simplified to how one would expect a woman in her position in the 1930s would react to theses circumstances all for the sake of streamlining the narrative. Regardless, it's still a perennial favorite. Funny how much it and 5 Little Pigs have in common. Both are narratively similar, highly cinematic, and extremely enjoyable episodes of the Suchet series.

I always wondered whether Postern of Fate, and A Passenger to Frankfurt were published because AC insisted, or the publishers knew they would make money. After all, her fans would buy a new Agatha Christie when it came out. I know I did. They are both completely confusing. I don't think they tarnished the legend, but they demonstrated that the great lady's gifts, not to say her mind, were slipping.

  • @filipvadas7602

This is *easily* one of my favorite episodes of the later seasons. The "Five Little Pigs" comparison is appropriate as not only does it have similar beats, but I feel like it really does carry the same air of *tragedy* with it, while also expanding the material in meaningfull ways that , in my opinion, actually "complete" the original work. Almost like Agatha Christie "hid" the framework for one more mystery in her final work with the loose end of Dolly's daughter that was only "uncovered" years later with this adaptation. Which is quite fitting to be honest with the themes of the story. Literally the only thing that makes this movie worse than its predecessor is the fact that , like you said, Celia is so much more one-dimenional compared to Marie; ironically making us care more about the villain than one of the inciting characters of the story. If it wasn't for that, I feel like this really would be *equal* to Five Little Pigs as arguibly the *best* Suchet adaptation. Still, this is an overall solid adaptation and a good movie on its own in my opinion.

Dear miles I am working on a and then there were none adaptation but I am have some changes in it mainly with the characters and I just wanted to hear some of your opinions. First massive changes is I have changed it form 10 little soldiers to 12 little soldiers. As in the movie adaptation they have replaced Mr marston and miss brent were replaced with an entertainer and a actresses but hear I wanted to use them as additions. For the actresses I kept the 1965 name ilona Bergen. I'll kept her as a some what friendly but sassy women. She is friendly to everyone but three people the rogers who she deemed beneath her as they are sevrats and miss brent mainly because of how prudish she is and finding our what her murder actually was. Another thing was that she seemingly developed a close friendship with Vera as they are the only two women on the island and they both don't like miss brent, I planned for her to die after Armstrong as when lombard and blore go out to look for him Vera and ilona stay locked in there rooms the murder gose threw the window shoots her using a pillow to silence it and leaves. Last her murder, here ilona really loved her husband but his husband also had a younger borther who was very very "difficulted" ilona would love to be rid of him but her husband can't abandon his borther, but one day while her husband is out his borther has medical emergency all ilona has to do is call an ambulance to save his life but she chose not to believing it was for the best, and her husband form grief of the death of his little borther kills himself. The entertainer I went with the 1965 name Micheal raven but unlike 1965 he actually a very nice person and regrets what he did like macarthur, here his victim is his secret gay lover who during a druken misadventure dies, before macarthur body is found him and the judge have an a conversation where raven confess to what he did this will suppose to show that there is no of the time bias as to why the judge chose these 11 people to die other then the fact that they are responsible for someone's death, his body is found after Macarthur's when Rogers ask how many will be for dinner to night blore response 8 with Lombard coming down correct that there is 7. The will also be a something coming up with raven and mister rogers but I'll talk about that later Mr marston, general macarthur and the judge are relatively the same with limited changes the only real ones are marston victims are two children as he is supposed to be the worst of the worst and that he would try and fail to chat up Vera and ilona. The rogers manger change is mrs rogers is still alot more painky and wants to leave the island. Mr rogers is not abusive at all the closest we get is when there names are called mrs rogers gose into a massive panic and her husband part losing his temper form her nagging and to try and claims her down she only faints after Mr Marston dies and that's when lombard and blore lift her on the couch and miss brent checks on her when they put his body away. After the doctor gives her the medicine ethal bleeds for thomas to stay with her but he has to go downstairs to clean the lounge room. After ethal dies thomas still try's to go on severing the guest by putting on a brave face and most of the guest are uncaring but raven who understands what its like to moron someone but not be able to show. As in the past ethal was originally going to be married to an abusive man but fell in love and ran away with thomas, and thomas wanting to be a good husband to ethal tries to give her a nice life but ends up being stuck in severest until miss Bardy offers to leave them something in her will and this is the moment he has been waiting for a chance to finally give ethal the life she deserves, he tells the idea to ethal and she agrees from her own will so while thomas with holds the medicine ethal makes sure no one can interfere but it comes back to haunt as at the time she didn't think what they were doing was murder but as time went on the guilty got to her, thomas is left serving his final day on the island with multiple thoughts that one of the last things he did to his wife was hit and dismissed her and that if he stayed with her he could have saved her life in fact if he never did what he did to try and save her form this terrible life, it wouldn't have killed her. Emily brent is still the same disapproving spinster but her crime has also been added as her borther was struggling with substance abuse which was all the fault of his wife as she didn't conform to her standard I mean the lord standards but let's his son move in with her and Beatrice who is lucky the same ages as him as the three of them come very close in a Mother children kind of way she finds out that her nephew also suffers form substance abuse and that he got Beatrice pergant as they both tried to get help form her but instead she threw them out on the streets where instead of suicide they die form starvation or hypothermia, we later lean while miss brent was a young women living in India with her family she fell in love with an Indian man and wanted to marry him but her father disapproved for religious reasons so she didn't and they moved back to England where she lived out her days alone and then when her nephew and Beatrice admitted to breaking the rules but want her help for a happy ending but she wasn't going to give it to them as why should she follow the rule and get no happy ending and they break them and get there's. Doctor Armstrong will be alot more like in 2015 all I got to say. William blore only real change could be making him a bit younger blame brun gorman and the fact that his victim was executed on his false evidence where he thought it would just send him to prison. Lombard is less rasict and didn't leave the African men to die because of the fact that they were natives but because he is just a selfish asswhole who was put in a dryer situation and chose to save himself also he has a much 2015 relationship with Vera. Vera claythorne is also alot like her 2015 she is still a panicking mess but still keep her compser, she figures out alot of the trick both putting suspicion on her, she did actually like cryil but was still willing to kill him, and I still keep that Vera is fast I will also keep the book the cryil was very sick. Thank you for making it this far love your video also new video ideas is top 10 best forgin agatha christie adaptation or when a TV character was better than there book

You're offended simply because Poirot told Ginny that the hand of Almighty God can heal anything? 😂 and on the basis of that alone, you recommend avoiding the film altogether? (There are better reasons to avoid it such as the deviation from Christie's plot, but that said...) There's absolutely nothing contentious in that one line. Nothing. It's ludicrous that you're making it out to be something intolerable. He's not forcing his religious beliefs on Ginny, he's just consoling her. Poirot is never portrayed as an atheist in any of the 33 books. It is always made clear that he has traditional, conservative ideas and values. This movie did not turn a drag queen into a nun. Calm down. PS: your political leanings are very visible from the language you use in the comments and you taking offense at this one line. Why is it ok for you to wear your politics on your sleeve, but religious people need to cloak and veil their faith, and love for God, like a heroin addiction? Nauseating hypocrisy.

One of the two lamest endings for Christie adaptations I've seen. The other is the Joan Hickson version of Pocketful of Rye. In both adaptations, they take Christie's flawless ending and "go Hollywood"--with lame chase scenes. Thankfully the Julia McKenzie version of Rye stuck to the original ending. Not Suchet's or Hickson's fault, they were splendid as usual.

I appreciate all your reviews and I often agree with you. In this case I have to defend the book, it’s really quite incredible considering when it was written and by who, it was shocking that the victims were children, this was way ahead of its time. I also like the Suchet version a lot. It was beautifully filmed and Mrs Oliver is top notch.. I really despise all of Branagh’s Poirot films, but especially thought this one was insipid and horrible. The use of Mrs Oliver in this film is the worse in any film ever.

When I saw the film version on PBS years ago, I was disappointed that it began with a visit to "James Bond" by a ghost and that it ended with "James Bond" becoming a ghost. In all of her books, Agatha Christie never resorted to the supernatural and portrayed her characters that did as kooks. It became hard for me to suspend my disbelief with an unnecessary adaptation that Christy would never have used.

Christie shows a bias against adoption in many of her books, suggesting that there are no loving adoptive parents and even if there are, the child will always feel less than, that kind of bothers me. I had forgotten Gugu Mbatha-Raw was in the Marple version of this. One of Christie's rare non-white characters and treated sympathetically in the book, even getting her happy ending. Mbatha-Raw is set to be one of the cast of the upcoming _Doctor Who_ spinoff, _The War Between Land and Sea._ This may be a bit outside your purview, but it might be interesting for you to take a look at _Doctor Who's_ Agatha Christie episode, "The Unicorn and the Wasp." In the short story The Caretaker by Agatha Christie this story is solved by Miss Marple. She is confined to bed due to a cold or something and her doctor brings her the problem to keep her occupied. I had seen, and enjoyed, the Hayley Mills version in the 70s or 80s but didn't realise it was a Christie until I read the book in the 2000s. I wasn't entirely happy with the latest adaptation of the story but because I also knew (by then) about the short story I thought putting Miss Marple into the story was an interesting idea. I would still have preferred a straight book adaptation however. I have read everything by Christie and think most of her books without Marple and Poirot are better and I prefer the Marple stories to the Poirot ones.

There are things I want to talk about that I didn't end up mentioning in the "4 Christies that Nailed It" video. I like the idea of doing it near the end of summer. I got my hands on a copy of the French version of The Hollow, so once I get around to re-reading the book, we'll see if a video script comes out of that comparison. :)

I still think of Juliet Stevenson's Gwenda. The tragedy was poignant.

She broke my heart. I haven’t been able to watch it again. Like the adaptation of ‘Chimneys’, this version put me off so much, I put off reading the book for years. It’s hard to

Oh gosh, the 2010 version is one of my favorite Poirot episodes. I think delving into the moral dilemma, though it was not in the book, added richness to Poirot’s character. Suchet’s acting at the end where he is unsure but is clinging to his rosary and praying in his mind, was amazing and very moving.

Fantastic review. I recently saw the Sutherland version- it was after he died. Got to watch the miss marple version.

A lot of people in their Christie novels/adaptations seem to drown. Do British people not learn how to swim?

We are usually taught in primary school. You've got me intrigued - the only drowning I can remember offhand is in 'Hallowe'en Party', where swimming wouldn't have helped the victim anyway! Do remind me of some more?

I agree the Marple version is just so heavy and cruel. None of the characters end up being likable. I always skip it if I’m doing a rewatch

Oh, and I hoped that you would solve the mystery of BOBBY! I don't get why he was there, and everyone totally forgot about his death the moment he died.

My best guess is that his death was needed as incentive to convince Kirsten to confess, so he was created to be kill-offable.
