Best Products of 2024: Year End Recap
Tune in to my latest installment on an end of the year recap on products I reviewed and liked and which ones I continue to regularly use today. Many channels I see often review new products and leave it at that, leaving viewers to wonder whether they still use the product and is a staple of their training routine (which speaks volumes to whether the product actually lives up to the hype in my opinion).
So I decided to do that in this video. That is, which products do I still use that I've reviewed and which ones have started to accumulate dust and maybe even a few cob webs. So tune in to learn more about which newer product have held up and stood the test of time here at Exerciselab.

Forgotten Gym Exercises: The Floor Press
just got mine today. I find the Tyler twist hurts exactly where you would expect. A few hours later I was able to open a jar for the first time in a week without pain. Find it easy and painless if I do the tyler with my good arm on the bottom. I recommend this product.
Glad it's helping.
Great video! I’ve been dealing with tennis elbow since October 5th. I played tennis that day and really destroyed my arm. It has slowly gotten better but I still feel some pain discomfort when I do exercises like the Tyler twist or grip strength. Another issue is I still can’t put my right arm straight like I can with my left arm. I have a doctor appointment next month with an orthopedic doctor so I’ll see what he says.
Thanks and sorry to see you're still on the mend. Some pain with tendinopathy is normal but if it's been hanging around for 3 months without being consistently agitated I think it's good you're getting it checked out (doesn't mean it's anything catastrophic by the way, but might just need some more specific therapy). Feel free to keep me posted on how your appt. goes.
what's the breathing technique here? You breath in when you go down and breath out when you lift your body with the bands? Is that it?
It's generally a good rule of thumb to exhale on the concentric or "lifting" part of a repetition, so I breathe out when I go up
@@ExerciseLab and when you go down with your body what exactly you must do? I'm getting kind of confused - you must try to hold your back tight in one line and only moove your legs in the hips or you must moove your back with your hips without bending your back? |'ve watched many clips of deadlift with bands and when I try to do it I feel kinda pain in the low back but only while |'m doing this exercise...is it right to feel it or is a sign of wrong technique?
Thank you for this
Love the idea for the video! I have a lot of similar interests and enjoy the content
Thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoyed it.
I just picked one up recently and agree with the points you make. The pad slipping while I’m doing reps is a real issue and you got me thinking of trying a band to see if that will work. Thanks
Than very helpful
Buy the x3
This is a well done review! Very helpful when making this decision. It seems the old model is the way to go as losing setting #4 is quite a big thing to give up.
Thanks glad you liked it. I agree. I wish the Transformer X had a little more to offer.
I’m thinking about the old model. I have the rep SSB now and find it very forward biased (like front squat). I get the rotating mechanism changes weight position relative to your spine , but don’t understand the four position options. Wouldn’t they just bias you back to another squat type? Like, if you had the disk on the back squat position , wojldnt moving the sleeves to 3 or 4 sort of force you back to a front squat position? (Or vice versa depending on how they go). Cheers. Any info would be useful.
@@ExpeditionaryRanger Hi, moving the sleeve length to 3 or 4 lengthens the distance the weight is from the center of the bar, moving the center of mass more in the direction of rotation. So for example, rotating to goblet, which moves the weight forward as in a goblet squat, will move the weight even farther forward when on 3 or 4 (I've tried 4 and it's very forward), giving the muscles a bit of an awkward but pretty unique challenge. Hope that helps.
Thanks for a great video! 👍 When the X came out, I was thinking "Damn, should I sell my V4 and get the new one?", but after seeing this, I realize I still have the best Transformer Bar that exists, the original shipping friendly (removable handles) V4 from Kabuki! 😀 One thing I don't hear you mention is that it has double the amount of angle positions as the V4. Chris Duffin mentions that in his video. Of course, if you count the 4 "difficulty" positions, it doesn't, but it is still worth mentioning. As for the "difficulty" positions, in my opinion they have nothing to do with harder or easier. The amount of weight you put on will determine how hard a squat is! 😄 What it does, is compensate for a heavier weight. So if you load up a LOT of weight you can compensate with bringing the weight closer to you and still get the same fore/aft balance, but you can also do that with adjusting the angle position. For example, if you put a 10 kg plate on each side, the center of gravity of the bar will be just in front of the middle between the sleeves and the bar itself, since the bar weighs about 20 kg (the sleeves weigh 2,2 kg each). If you put 100 kgs on each side and move the sleeves from the 4 to 2 position, the center of gravity of the bar will be about the same. Adjusting the angle, for example from Goblet to Front or SSB, will do exactly the same. So the "difficulty" positions aren't really needed, especially with 12 angles instead of 6. The X should've had the sleeves as far out as the 4 position, though, to be as versatile as the V4.
Thanks for the feedback and glad you liked it! That's a good call out on the difficulty levels thing. I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that doing dumbbell curls with your arm behind your back is difficult (but obviously not effective). I would've liked the X at a greater distance too but that cassette is already pretty large so it probably wouldn't be very practical if it was any bigger
This bar is wayyy overpriced.
For me it kinda was. I live in Norway, so the price to get it here was $1430 including shipping and 25% VAT. As a Personal Trainer it is still worth it, since it lets people who couldn't normally squat use it. Getting a good leg press or hack squat would have cost much more, and I don't have space for it either in my small studio. If you live in the US, it's not overprices at all. I have no reason to believe it is of any lesser quality than any Eleiko bar which costs much more.
To be fair, Rogue took away the stickers when they started building the Transformer Bar. My Transformer bar is from Kabuki and it has stickers.
That's a fair point. I actually realized that after I shot the video. Oregon transformers did have stickers. Too bad they didn't take a page out of Rogue's book for the Transformer X
Great review. I had a labrum SLAP tear, most likely from low bar squatting, so I’m looking to get a different squat bar. Would you say this bar could be a worthy replacement for high bar, low bar, SSB, and front squats?
Thanks! In my opinion yes. The versatility is hard to beat here and as mentioned, I even prefer this bar to the Transformer X.
@@ExerciseLabhow much does pulling the handles fatigue your arms on low bar settings with 300+ lbs? Wondering if it will affect me on bench the next day.
Not that much really. I think you should be fine to bench the next day, especially after you've done it a few times.
@ awesome. Thank you
Just got the squat saddle and my god is it the most uncomfortable pos pad I've ever used
ya hopefully Kabuki will be looking at their user feedback to see how they can improve some things here
I'm sorry but that handle threading off is a fucking hell no for me. That's gotta be the most annoying this I've ever seen.
Of the OG and the X, I would take the OG.
Where did you get the nubby shirt handle I have an v4 from kabuki and it was the long one as well.. :( always hits my knees
Interesting. My V4 is the Rogue edition so maybe the short handles were only included with that model. I assumed they also came with the Oregon made Transformers but it sounds like they didn't :/
@brians14 I have the Kabuki V4 made in Oregon, and when I ordered I also ordered optional bar ends. They are not short handles, but rather the exact same bar ends as you find on the Shoulderök. I could have easily just used the bar without the long handles too, if I didn't have the bar ends. Kabuki will probably still be able to deliver bar ends if you contact them (since they still sell the Shoulderök), if not just check out bar ends for bicycles. Looking at the pipe diameter, many of those should fit, since they are often expandable to fit different sized handlebars. I do know earlier V4 bars didn't have the removable handles, so for those I guess an angle grinder is an option :)
Thorough and balanced review. Even happier with my Rogue bar than I was before:)
Thanks :)
Rogue makes great stuff. I have the Ohio DL bar and love it. That being said, i have the original KABUKI transformer bar, and nothing Rogue makes compares to it. It's very simplistic in design, and contrary to what he said, you can adjust what type of squat you're doing with weights on it. But typically, you're only doing the squat you set out to do and don't change.
Excellent timing! I planned on buying the standalone “saddle” pad with straps to do belt squats and eventually with a normal barbell. Yikes on the stickers and already scratched finish on the bar, still never saying never, the customization is tempting.
Ya the saddle pad with straps is an interesting idea. I'm curious to see how it's going to feel too (I don't have straps for mine yet).
How is it on the knees?
technically it does place more stress on the patellofemoral joint of the knee compared to a traditional squat. Good news is you don't have to load it as heavy as a traditional barbell squat and so in that sense it may actually be less. I probably wouldn't start with sissy squats in someone with a history of patellofemoral pain, or use it several times a week though. As mentioned in the video, if the loading/dosing is right I think it's fine on the knees
Hi, What is the best way to reach you by email?
Hi, I just added an email address to my about page.
Thank you for this deep dive. Loved how you broke down the biomechanics of the bar comprehensively! There is no other video that goes into this level of detail. 🙏
Thanks for the feedback.
Hi, I am 39 years old male. My weight is 74 kg. Been weight training for about 6 months. Nothing grip strength specific, but I do train forearms. I did the dead hang test (standard/average pull up bar thickness) just out of curiosity and I can hang 55 seconds. Is that good, bad, great, average? for my age and background? Thanks
Hi, I'd say that's not bad for someone who's been training 6 months and not doing much grip specific work. You could walk into any commercial gym and find people who've been exercising for quite a bit longer who can't do this. That said, I wouldn't stop here. Keep trying to add time or, if you can, get some Fat Gripz or similar as mentioned in the video and keep progressing. Happy Training
@@ExerciseLab thanks for the feedback. Appreciate it!
Thanks for mentioning the Saxon grips again. The V2 of those fit on a bigger diameter bar, and are easier to get on as well.
@@Ice_Box_Gym interesting. There's a V2 out now? I looked on the website and didn't see anything mentioned about this
Good explanations!
Thanks.
Just get a foam under desk foot rest. Cheaper and does the same thing.
Interesting idea. I might not be thinking of the same thing but the ones I'm familiar with are a little too squishy.
Good stuff. Maynard.
First time I’ve seen this exact set up. Thanks for putting it out there.
You are not even going below parallel with the exercise. Defeats the purpose of it.
Thanks! 👍🏻
You talk to much

The squat in the Sissy Squat machine is more a Spanish Squat since your hips isn't locked out. I think both these and true Sissy Squats are great and target slightly different areas.
Yes you can sit back a little more on the sissy squat (unless you're using a very strong band for Spanish squats) but they are pretty similar.
Thank you for the unbiased review. Gary Reinl, the creator of Marc Pro, claims to have debunked the RICE protocol for acute injuries, and of course, his invention is the solution. What do you recommend as current best practices/standard of care for, say, an acute ankle sprain? Do you think that the Marc Pro has merit there? TIA
Yes while it hasn't exactly been widely adopted, I think the broader community is rethinking RICE. I generally shy away from anti-inflammatories unless I have a pretty strong reason to use them e.g. undue swelling after a knee replacement, but not for a typical ankle sprain, and yes, that may be a place the Marc Pro has something to offer. Not sure how much it would 'accelerate' recovery, but it may help some after the acute inflammatory phase.
spreader bar>?
you're doing it wrong. posture needs to be upright
yes as I explain in the video I do this intentionally to reduce excessive knee stress. I know 'true' sissy squats you sit back more but i'm trying to strike a balance between hitting the quads without hitting the knees too hard, so I sit back more than a regular squat, but not way back.
@@ExerciseLab then maybe you love the belt squats, you can load it and focus a lot.
@@javimarco1417 Yes I do like belt squats. My main issue with the belt squat machines is that they tend to have a pretty large footprint which makes them a bit on the bulky side for a garage gym. I've also seen more minimal setups with plyoboxes and a squat/dip belt but getting in place with sufficient load can be a bit awkward.
For your own benefit you need to work on the audio quality
Thanks for the feedback. Someone else alerted me to this and I started using a microphone on my more recent uploads. At some point, I plan on updating and reshooting a few of the older vids with poor audio
How does the low bar and high bar settings compare to using a regular barbell in those positions. Does it feel better or worse or similar?
I haven't tried to match a low bar position exactly as I'm often using it in safety or goblet squat lately. I would think you can achieve a pretty similar loading effect though. I'll have to give it a try one of these days and get back to you
Thank you. I have been hoping somebody would do an in depth review. I am not good with a camera so it wasn't going to be me 😅
😁
@@ExerciseLab I actually got the idea for them after using fat gripz for the first time, so it was cool you actually had them all there explaining it.
@@Ice_Box_Gym Thanks I'm glad you found it to be useful. I just figured I might as well since many people are more familiar with Fat Gripz.
@@ExerciseLab i was watching an inteview with Jake Jawarski (garage gym experiment/home gym con) and Riccardo Magni (armlifting usa) when it struck for me to develop and design these. I hope many people come here and understand the benefits.
@@Ice_Box_Gym Abmat seems to be on the rise/producing some solid products (no pun intended :) Hopefully they'll be able to get the word out.
I have my own sissy squat equipment also but love the idea of the band. Thx Rosie
One of my favorite bars in my gym. I've had the V2 for about 3 years now and wouldn't trade this for anything that exists today in the gym
yes, big kudos to Kabuki on this one :)
I had a labrum SLAP tear, most likely from low bar squatting, so I’m looking to get a different squat bar. Would you say this bar could be a worthy replacement for high bar, low bar, SSB, and front squats?
Posting this as its own comment: Just want to give an update. A nice, dense, 1.5 inch thick gardening pad works extremely well. Pretty much completely fixes the issue (of too much space between calf pad and foot rollers). I misspoke earlier. I had said "pad placed between shins and foot rollers" which is clearly the wrong way to do it. The pad should of course be placed behind the calves, essentially making the calf pad thicker, and your shins closer to the foot rollers. Also, raised heel weightlifting shoes help a lot too, as mentioned in the above video. Now it feels and performs as it should by default. Titan need to update this machine, allow the foot rollers to go much closer to the calf pad, and maybe lower the rollers slightly, as well as make them stationary, not spinning. They really do not need to spin and it would be more stable if they didn't.
Thanks for following up on this. I too like the feel with weightlifting shoes (if you happen to have some). I will give this a try
Just got mine in today, remodeling my workout shed. How do you store yours? I was gonna mount on wall but sleeves are quite tall straight up and gun rack seems like the cylinders would hit wall?
Glad to see you got one. If you look in some of my other recent videos you can see how I use a single barbell mount on the wall in the corner. I did have to widen it slightly (Dremel) for it to fit since it was a little tight
@@ExerciseLab I quickly looked at one. Do you leave the sleeves out to store on wall? Appreciate you sharing
@@the_grinch_life1187 I do leave the sleeves on since they aren't touching anything. I don't know that using a floor stand would be a great idea though, which is why I opted for a wall mount (just two bolts into a 2 x 4"). Seems to be holding it fine so far.
@@ExerciseLab gotcha. Thanks! 🙏
Is that the closest position for the foot roller? Seems too far away.
Yes that is actually my biggest knock on this product. I added extra padding to thicken them but it would've been nice if it was a bit closer to the shins
@@ExerciseLab I just bought it yesterday on the Black Friday sale. Someone in the customer reviews said that a thick foam gardening pad placed between the calves and the calf pad does a good job to tighten things up. I'm going to try that.
@@CaptJackAubreyOfTheRoyalNavy Ok thanks for the tip. I actually had a 1/2-1" sheet of foam laying around and similarly used that between my shins and the foam pads and that worked pretty well. If Titan would just make the foam pads bigger that would help a lot.
@@ExerciseLab Agreed. It's strange that Titan made an otherwise great sissy squat stand with such bafflingly wide spacing. Ah well, the foam hack seems to work ok. Still better than the other piece of crap sissy squat stands all over Amazon. I have the one from Leike Fitness, which seems to be the least crappy, but still has major problems and feels very cheap.
@@CaptJackAubreyOfTheRoyalNavy Good to know. Unfortunately I think a lot of exercise equipment goes straight from the drawing board to the production line without a lot of testing/user feedback.
Is this good for Tendonitis in knee
Would you say this could qork to replace SSB + a cambered bar?
I would say this could definitely replace a SSB bar (it basically is a SSB bar with more versatility) but not necessarily a cambered bar. I've also uploaded a cambered bar video: ruclips.net/video/THBsD57OSx8/видео.html you can checkout that discusses some of the pros/cons of cambered bars
@@ExerciseLab thanks but by camber bar I meant a squat bar with a big camber, I currently have the Rogue CB1, it def has camber longer than the kabuki at 16’’ drop, guessing the lvl4 position foe kabuki is probably 8-10
Ok got it. I've actually never used the Rogue CB1 but yes if it has a 16" drop that is definitely longer. I haven't measured the transformer but I would say 8-10" is about right. @@aba192
in this case, I'd say it probably boils down to personal preference somewhat as well. At a certain point I would imagine the drop/camber becomes a bit awkward and so any biomechanical advantages diminish. I don't know that to be the case with the CB1 however since I haven't used it. Looks like an interesting bar though. @@aba192
You've convinced me to get more of the same resistance bands to do band drop sets give more variety. Thank you!
Ya it's just a fun way to give bands like Therabands, which are sort of the de facto PT clinic bands, a bit more juice :)
The Athena cable attachment for Rep Fitness allows bands on the weight stacks so you get the benefit of quick weight selection plus progressive resistance from the bands KILLER for tricep extensions! I wish there was a device that let you measure what the real weight resistance was at various points of the lift though. Doing it this way lets you do drop sets on last set and absolutely torch the triceps.
Ok thanks and good to know. I will have to check this out
I see you have the Shake Strap, how do you like it?
I like it and have been using it mostly for tricep extensions and curls. It's a nice in between using a band vs rope attachment.
This is the bar THE ROCK uses to train his legs!
Ha, I didn't know that.
I have this for about a month its awesome! Helped get my squat up a lot in a month as its so comfortable! I also just started doing the hinge for my lower back and love it. One of these days will use the SSB setting to do Hatfield squats.
Yes as I continue using it I do like it more and more compared to traditional barbell squats. Kudos to Kabuki
I had a labrum SLAP tear, most likely from low bar squatting, so I’m looking to get a different squat bar. Would you say this bar could be a worthy replacement for high bar, low bar, SSB, and front squats?
