WE NOW ACCEPT CHIP CARDS AT THIS FUEL DISPENSER
I live in Wyoming elevation 6,000+.... started having battery problems after 1 year... not due to heat, just wornout lead acid batteries. I converted to lithium, tremendous difference. I’m getting greater power and longer run times. I have a 42 inch Ryobi riding mower. The claim that it will do 3-4 acres on a single charge is false. best I’ve seen is 2 to 2.5. The difference in battery weight is pretty significant too. Lithium weigh 25lbs Lead 65lbs.
Great video. My blades shutoff after 10 seconds with battery showing 100 percent. Do you think it's a relay or something under the seat?
I upgraded to lithium ion. Battery heat build up creates a false shut down with the battery protection. Depending on grass height and air temps this will greatly increase cut times as battery heat shuts down your batteries with summer heat especially in the Middle and Deep South. Frequent breaks allow for more to be done. I just make it an opportunity to have a drink and 30 min or 20 I crank her back up. Good idea to tilt up seat and remove battery cover for cooling. Shade a good idea too. Can cut 4 week growth with ease but does increase heat. I recently started extending cut times to 4 weeks and it allows for good native stands without summer brown out cutting max height. But the breaks are key. Also clean your blade motor carriages yearly or every 6 months as that leads to motor heat and battery strain.
Thanks Bro
Ryobi should have stacked these batteries laterally, so they can be pulled one at a time from under the seat. They should have never used thread lock on screws that thread into back nut clips. That makes no since to do so when it breaks all the tabs. To Ryobi's credit, they did use basic standardized fasteners, and they included a small bag of tools that fit almost everything.
DID IT HIT THE AIR DUCT? SUBS CAN EXTEND A COUPLE INCHES OR MORE WHEN THUMPING? HOW DID IT SOUND?
Amazing, I’m looking for battery options and I stumbled up your channel! I’m a cousin that used to live not so far from you. Do you still run this tractor?
Donated to my mom but it's still running ( not for very long as the replacement batteries are again loosing longevity)
Can anyone please tell me the exact type/style of battery I need to get that will fit properly in the tray and the posts are in the correct position? Where I should get them and do you recommend a better(hopefully longer lasting) type of battery? Thank you to anyone who can help me.
Anybody has the link for the battery replacement? One that will last longer than the orig ones. Ty!
That little blip every time it goes to a new clip is irritating me for some reason 😂
Thanks Google, wanted to spend 0 minutes editing so I just paused the video 😭
@@chadbentz7650 I understand that feels bad but sometimes things just won't cooperate lol
Any updates on this? How are they running 2 years later?
Starting to lose significant runtime... They out in the cold garage now, I don't bring them into my living room like a good boy 😅. I'll have to run some stats on them this season. I swapped to an ego - might be worth a compare!
@@chadbentz7650 So for $1,200 in batteries we should expect maybe 2 years of service out of them? The ego gave the lithium batteries which are even more expensive. Like the new Ryobis. The 54 inch lithium Ryobi has 3x batteries that are $900 each.
Thank you for the video, i was struggling to pull them out, pulled like hell, no movement. Didn’t know you have to take the middle one out 😁 How do you clean the mower? My dealer said only dry wash with very little water in cloth. Really? I can’t wash my 5000€ lawn mower with the garden hose?
Update?
I have the 54” RYOBI zero turn model RY48140 I bought in May 2021 and it is currently in the shop with 2 batteries at 7% life left, and 2 less than 50%. Repair bill expected to be $2000 for 4 new batteries. Pay now or pay later. Mower was working fine but went from cutting 1/2 yard on full charge to only 1/3 of yard the last couple of weeks. 3.36 acres. Been sitting in the shop for over 2 weeks now. I am 60 and don’t really have a choice because I have no way to transport gas or the strength to fill up a standard gas mower. Just know you are paying $1000 for convenience per year.
That's a hefty bill for what should be $280*4 (was as low as $244 on Amazon amzn.to/3KSEqv4). I paid a little more buying from a local battery supplier.
So the manual mentioned not to store the mower in freezing temperatures. Wondering if there are replacement batteries that are speced better for new England winter storage😅
Ugh tell me about it, do i bring them in the house?!?! I have seen battery warmers as a potential solution - though not sure they are intended for long term storage.
LFP battery DO NOT BUY and R&R Pb battery with Pb battery!!! Replace those Pb Battery with New LFP batttery See RUclips lead battery replace with Li Ion LFP batteries agan DO NOT install replace Pb battery install replace with Li Ion LFP battery
Li Ion LFP need a new charger and the cheeper are better for LFP LFP are safer lighter more power more run time lower cost that old Ryobi Pb battery
I upgraded to Lithium Ion. Works great and charger is compatible. I am editing this as the charger does not fully charge the batteries even though the mower says they are fully charged. Plus lithium need a higher voltage for charging. I am going to attempt a screen shot of a new charger I am installing to correct deficiencies in using lead acid charger that came stock with battery. Screen shot didnt work so use this in your shopping site and it should get you the charger you need. 48v+lifepo4+charger
What batteries did you get?
Same question: what batteries? To confirm - the Ryobi charger was compatible with the Lithium Ion batteries?

Are these new batteries lithium
Seeing this and reading the comments, I will never own a battery powered zero turn. Battery cost is way too expensive. I can literally buy gas cheaper.
I'm so glad that I bumped into this video (and others) about battery issues in the Ryobi electric Zero Turn mower! I've had mine for 3 seasons and am headed into a 4th. Recently, my display has been informing me of ever decreasing maximum charge. On my most recent trip to tow the garbage can down our 1/4mile lane, charge was indicated at 65% immediately after unplugging the charger. However, the 1/2 mile trip (blade off) was completed without problem . . . and no change to the battery charge, still 65%. To make a long story shorter, after pulling the batteries out for individual tests and finding no problems - this video (or another one) revealed that the charge read-out instrument may not "tell the truth". So I've put the machine back together . . . and now the read out is showing 100% charge! I'll be watching for actual symptoms of battery failure now . . . and not simply depend on the instrument read out. (PS: Read out says I've put on 49 hours of use over the 3 seasons - including garbage runs every week throughout the years. So if the batteries are actually still OK, I'll be feeling pretty good. I have always tried to stop mowing at about 50% as a battery saving measure.)
Do we have any idea of the cubic feet of the stock box. I'm looking to upgrade as well but with an amp and a sub. So I am looking to pair the right sub with this enclosure.
It's 25 liters which is 0.882867 cubic feet. Right now I'm adding a Fortissimo FF8-D4 with a Ground Zero GZHA Mini ONE Amp to it to enhance my Standard Sound system. Just designed an adapter to fit the sub into the housing. Let's see how it fits after printing...
Thank you for the vid! 🤙
I am planning to convert my batteries from the lead acid to lithium. Will I have to make any modifications or will the charging be an issue? Could someone please let me know what I need to do to upgrade my batteries to lithuim?
Thanks for the video & take care !!
The trouble with the electric lawn tractors is that there is too many batteries to replace ! Why can't they make one with just 1 battery , Untill then I will wait ,. The batteries are too expensive I think ,. Just saying. Just as well stick with gas Lol
Thank goodness for the battery man down the street where I can exchange the batteries and only pay 50 bucks a piece for each battery. I use them for my 18-wheeler just as well my Volvo vnl still runs.
How big of a 10 inch can you fit in that oem box ? What are you running now ?
You should have converted your mower over to lithium batteries like I did. I won’t have to change batteries for another 10yrs or more
Can you share how you did yours?
@@mikenegron6162 replaced the regular batteries with CHIN 12V 100ah batteries. Followed same process in this video. For the battery charger, I’m using the NOCO 48v charger that can change any battery type, including lithium. I use a Kill-O-WATT to monitor how many amp hours I use each run, by seeing how much electricity it takes to get full recharge. Then I just determine how many mows I can get out batteries before a recharge is needed. Right now I can mow 3-4 times between recharge. I use to have to recharge after every mow with lead acid batteries.
@RAPR117 Thanks for the response it was definitely helpful. will be attempting to remove batteries this weekend to test before taking the plunge.
@@mikenegron6162 fyi, original battery gauge will no read correct battery charge with lithium
@@RAPR117 How is that working for you? I'm thinking of doing the same, although I was hoping I could still get away with the original charger. I'm on 10 acres, but I also have a 72" Scag that I use for the heavy stuff; the Ryobi is just for the 2-3 acres around the house.

It's always the second battery that dies 🤔
Does anyone know if changing out the lead acid for lithium requires you buy a new charger or is the original suitable
You will need a new charger... they maintain charge differently
FYI that connector on the Blue Wire is called an AMP connector, it is NOT "proprietary", it is used by virtually every single after market HID headlight kit and I freaking love them, holds securely but easily removed when needed.
Wow, I watched the entire video and no result at the end....Did it work? Was it worth it? Was it better/worse?? Like wow no end to the video.
My battery pack was dead on arrival. Did a full return. Hopefully lithium ion battery mowers get to gas powered prices soon.
Thanks to this video I was able to swap out my lead battery in my Ryobi ZT480ex with Ampere Time 12V(12.8V) 100Ah liFePO4 batteries. That blue wire I had to reattach when sliding the batteries back in. Couldn't reach the connection with the batteries in. Also forgot to put the meatal rack on top of the batteries the first time I put them back. The long bolt wouldn't in the middle of the batteries wouldn't catch the thread. Had to leave it lose. My new batteries are charging now with the original charger. Thank you for making this video.
Did it only take one battery?
How many hours did you have on it?
80.8
I'm confused, did your new replacement batteries test out with below spec CCA on load? Did you test all 4 of them? I just got a used one super cheap that needs 4 batteries but maybe some electronic components too. The more I research this the less impressed I am with this mower and think lead acid are probably 1-3 years vs 3-5 years. Not sure if I want to pour money into this thing.
I'm not sure they are rated for any CCA , was the only tool I had to compare.
@@chadbentz7650 I'm confused about the part around 2:40 where you tested them I guess with a load function and it showed that the one new one you tested was in the "weak" range.
what are the specs of OEM sub?
How much does it cost to replace the batteries?
i would rather fix a carb than pay for batteries ,,staying with gas an my 1220 ford is a 3cyl diesel engine
I just replaced the 4 batteries in my 1 year old mower like this one. Ryobi sent 4 new replacement batteries under the 1 year battery warranty. and only just barely. After charging it showed 70 % and running for 10 minutes dropped it to 30 %, so doing very poorly. Only addition I would make is to remove the 4 screws that hold the charging port. Then the plug comes out and the small 2 wires that need to be disconnected are easy to get to and will sit outside the charging o\port hole and out of the way. Thanks for making the video-it was a big help. John in Florence OR
Did you have to send the entire mower to Ryobi? Or did they just send you batteries?
@@Replicant9900 The Ryobi tech said I could package and send the mower for them to replace the batteries but that didn’t sound like a feasible option to me. I’ve done many similar kinds of repairs and the video helped see that it was doable.
@@jobgreaves - Right, but Ryobi agreed to send you replacement batteries without sending them the mower? I really don't want to spend $1k on new batteries after only 2 years. They should have lasted 10 years with proper maintenance.
Lol 10 years on lead lololol maybe of use only use 10% of rated capacity. 3 passes and park it...
@@davidlarson1369 - I'm basing this on my 10 years of wheelchair repair experience, and having replaced literally hundreds of Gel and AGM batteries. In wheelchairs, AGMs last about a year of heavy use, that's used all day every day, and probably being charged at least twice per day. With a mower, it's only getting used once a week, optimally. And if I I don't deplete them to less than 50%, yes, they should last a good many years.
How have those new batteries held up so far this new lawn care season? I'm thinking about upgrading to the 110ah vs the stock 100ah.
Would also love to hear about your experiences with the 110ah batterie
I would like to get your feedback on this too. @Chad Bentz
If there's space, I'd hang a second Anderson off the backside so you could also use the batteries for something else, like maybe a 48v inverter or appliance.
Update to graphing batter’s 🔋
I'm staying with gas, battery prices are high.
Thanks for the vid! I'd rather watch a regular guy for step by step instruction than a professionally made video. I think my charger is bad (LED light on charger doesn't turn on, and the light at the charging port just flashes quickly) so I'm charging them individually and getting them load tested. Just in case it is the batteries.
Just updating. It was the charger! My lawn is saved
how many volts should you get if you test the charging port with the 100 ah model?
52 with turn on and not moving and when you run the blades anything lower 48V and batteries are bad.
Super sucks they used SLA AGM vs a lithium chemistry. Lead acid batteries really should not be discharged more than 50% if you want them to last more than a season or two.
You do NOT need to disconnect the first white (not gray) wire. They are now sent glued together!
Thanks! I purchased mine back in '19 .. good to know Ryobi making some revisions!
I broke a hook :(((
