Birding in Singapore-Black-backed/Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Lower Peirce Reservoir Oct 2024.
Thanks to a birder who shared her sighting of the famous mega migratory star bird on 9 Oct 2024. Commonly known as the ODK (Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher) at Lower Peirce Reservoir, Lower Peirce Trail - Casuarina Entrance. No one knows when it will leave and so everybody were there to watch.
I managed to visit on 11 Oct, though not that lucky to get a good spot, I was happy just to watch and have a few pictures and video for my wildlife memories.
Sharing what it is like to watch a mega star at the narrow trail.

      Hello Lithe. Welcome to Singapore again. Do you mind sharing which part of the world are you flying from? As for your question ... In general, Singapore Botanic Gardens is a good place for birding. With the migrating season now, we can spot more birds too. The garden is big, so we can try our luck from one garden to another. But since they are wildlife...we need to manage our expectations. Weather can also be another factor affecting the birds coming out. My apology I don't think I can answer your question. Lets hope the weather is kind to you when you are here, so you will be able to meet as many birds during your coming trip regardless which garden you visit. Cheers.

      @kimpriority I am from Malta. Small state in Europe. Will appreciate if you send me a 5 day wildlife photography itinerary in Singapore. I will start with Singapore Botanic gardens or Pasir Ris. Should I visit Mandai Bird Park? I really wish to get a shot of The Philippine Eagle there.

    • @kimpriority
      @kimpriority 10 дней назад

      @marcuscaruana6772 1. Yes, Singapore Botanic Garden is highly recommended since most migratory bird likes to visit Healing/Fragrant Garden. A good place to meet local birders and asked for good birding places for eg. any interesting birds in which garden at the time of your visit. (Best to avoid Sundays as it will be full of people having picnic there). 2. I have not been to the Bird Paradise in Mandai. So far, 3 birders have shared with me that it is worth visiting even with the price tag. So I guess it is worth visiting. 3. Pasir Ris Park is getting quiet nowadays but I still love this place for the mangrove boardwalk and walking the park with old trees and trying my luck spotting the Spotted Wood & Buffyfish Owl. There are no owls nesting at this moment(not sure about Nov), so it can be challenging spotting them. Well, the very common birds like sunbirds, bulbuls and collared kingfisher can still be spotted there. 4. Jurong Lake Gardens is my another favourite. I usually explore the Southern Promenade, Heron Island, Rasau Walk, Garden House (for the nightjar), walking next to the river all the way to Forest Ramble & Clusia Clove. 5. Bidadari Park is small and very accessible. You may want to visit in the morning, continued to Windsor Nature Park in the afternoon after lunch. 6. Tampines Econ Green is another nice place to visit in the morning. But there is no toilet there, the toilet at Sun Plaza Park is undergoing renovation now. 7. If you like waterbirds, Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve is a good place to visit since it is the migratory season in Nov. 8. The park usually turns quiet between 12pm to 2pm. The best time for us to have lunch LOL. Above are some of my tips, hope it is good for you and most importantly, lets hope the weather is kind to you. Otherwise..... Good luck is what you need LOL.

      @@marcuscaruana6772 I don't think I can answer this. Share with you this link. Its the Bird Sightings group that I follow. Kind people sharing what they sighted daily. I actually saw the black bird when I was in England as well. But did not manage to get a video of that bird. Really nice to see them, my friend.

    Greetings from Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR. Here in the semi-rural areas in the New Territories of Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR, near and around the beachfront promenade, and around the thick dense vegetations of shrubs and mangroves, we can also see the Chinese Blackbird 🐦‍⬛, Chinese Egrets, Common Kingfisher as well as Wagtails .

    The White-breasted Waterhens are also commonly found along the beachfront promenade, but they tend to hide under shrubs and mangroves during hot summers. Their JUVENILE chicks can be seen following the parent bird at any given time.

      Yes. I spotted them when I visited HK last year.

    The Swinehoe’s White-eye is also commonly called the Japanese White-eye is also a resident of Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR. But we don’t have any woodpecker in HK. However, the Common Kingfisher can be found near the beachfront promenade at the estuary in the semi-rural areas of the New Territories in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR.

      I did the booking myself. Actually I planned for a simple getaway (since it is so costly to get there LOL). Let me share with you. 1. Hotels and flights, I booked via internet. Musket Cove Island resort includes all meals and tours to the sand bank. They also provide day tours at a fee, but we decided to enjoy the resort facilities and do the day trips when we return to main island where hotel rates are cheaper. We start our holiday from Musket Cove Island Resort - a resort in Malolo Lailai Islands. 2. Return transfer from Airport to Musket Cove Island Resort - I book the return airport transfer to Musket Cove via the resort. They are very nice to help me arrange for my transfer to another hotel in the main Island instead of the airport at an additional fee. Perhaps it would be better for you to check with the hotel for such arrangement before booking with them. 3. To save cost of accommodation, we transfer to a hotel at main Island. We chose somewhere near Nadi Area for easy access to place of interest. We book day tours for Island Hopping or other tours from the tour desk at the hotel we stayed. We know there are cases when people booked day tour via the internet but the tour agent failed to pick them up. So we played safe. 4. After the trip, we think it is better to stay near Denarau Island area at main Island since it is near to the port where we set sail for Island Hopping. 5. Most important of all, check the weather of Fiji before planning to visit. Since we are there for the beach, it is very important to plan on days when the weather is good and water is calm. There are many information via the internet. Above are some infor that I did while planning for my trip to Fiji. Hope it is helpful to you. Thanks for watching. Cheers!!
