This is a standard lathe attachment called a milling slide. It allow adjustment (or movement) in the Z axis. Back in the 1930 when model engineering was a popular hobby in the UK, and true mill were totally unaffordable, these were widely discussed, bought and used. And made, of course, model engineers being what they are.

The idea of the layeral tailstock is not bad, except, the only thing why all the tailstocks are on the lathe's bed is because you must align only the height. On your design you must align-it horizontally and vertically and I doubt you will succeed. The second thing is the liear rails will not support the needed forces for a long time, this is why they are not used in lathe. Nice but is a toy not a mini lathe. Sorry but is my opinion after a engineer life, we are not reinventing mechanics ... Good luck with your project.

Good job. I see only 2 mistakes. 1. You weld both sides and U cant change bearings without cut. 2. You use a metric thread not trapezoidal thread. Metric can stuck. Except that is nice.

I might have missed something, BUT torque mechanism needs to move axially which is impeded by work piece and mill/drill. I guess that's why there was no follow up video.
