How a black hole destroys a star!
Without gravity, we would not exist, but gravity can also be responsible for some of the most violent and dynamic events in the universe!
Tidal Disruption Events occur when a star strays too close to a black hole and gets ripped apart by its gravity. They're violent, they're exciting, and they're one of the most useful laboratories in Astrophysics!

Why can't JWST see visible light?
Просмотров 147Месяц назад
The James Webb Space Telescope, or JWST, is often referred to as a replacement for the Hubble Space Telescope - but it really isn't. Find out why! This video looks to answer a question I've had for years - why can't we put visible light detectors on infrared telescopes? What about their optics makes that impossible? I go through the problem, find the solution, then have a bit of fun with a "wha...

    +++ NONSENSE! There is no Olber's Paradox at all when we carefully think of it. Even if we consider the universe as infinite then most of the stars are so so far away, that the light simply cannot reach us, because of the inverse square law of light intensity. At a certain substantial distance, the intensity of light will be so weak, neither eyes nor any sophisticated equipment is not able to pick such a weak light up any longer. The Hubble telescope pointed at a seemingly empty part of space and after a very long camera >>>exposure<<< eventually imaged lots of very faint galaxies/objects. Unfortunately our eyes and brain can't do long exposures. Human eyes only see light in the present moment, hence we see only limited images. Seems that the intellect of our 'esteemed' scientists [cough!] wouldn't allow them to even punch their way out of a wet paper bag.

    • @ThomasRintoul
      @ThomasRintoul Месяц назад

      So coding is by far not a majority of an astrophysics course at undergrad, most of it is learning the physics. But it is highly likely that you will have some coding modules - but that would be true of a Physics course or perhaps even a maths course. Modern science involves a lot of data and processing that data involves coding.

    • @ThomasRintoul
      @ThomasRintoul Месяц назад

      So what I do is "theory" in that it's not observational. But you're right, it's not equations primarily - the reason for that is that my current project is in analysing simulations that are built on a lot of existing theory in an attempt to understand a specific effect. There will probably be times where I am working on the more theoretical side to improve simulations. My work is constantly evolving because we're on the forefront of scientific knowledge

       @shreejal69 if you're into just the Physics and maths, there's a subset of Theoretical astrophysics that focuses on just that. It's pretty advanced level maths tho like general relativity and Cosmology, you can look it up to see if you might be interested in that sort of thing

    I didn't know this! How cool. Is it known what percentage of gas collected by the CGM gets converted into stellar formation over a given period of time for our galaxy or Andromeda?

    • @ThomasRintoul
      @ThomasRintoul Месяц назад

      So I don't know if there's a percentage value, but what I do know is that accretion (collecting gas) is required for galaxies like the MW and Andromeda to have sustained the star formation they have now and had in the past (particularly the MW which did the majority of its star formation a while ago - a few billion years ago I think). Without accretion, they'd have used up all their gas very quickly and the MW wouldn't be forming stars today

    Love it, I'd love to see more of this "Tips for getting your point across". I know I've seen at least one scientific plot in a physics talk that just made my eyes glaze over and think "I can't understand a single thing this plot is trying to convey". I always try to keep in mind color-blind-friendly choices but wasn't aware there are specific gradients that address just that! Another favorite is to switch or combo e.g. line dashing with color.

    • @ThomasRintoul
      @ThomasRintoul Месяц назад

      Yeah there are so many people who either don't bother, or don't think to think about it cause they just don't know. Trying to keep my plots accessible is such a priority for me. I've known so many amazing scientists who have really struggled because people don't put in the bare minimum effort to make their stuff accessible. Also yeah, line styles and line markers are things I didn't even touch on in this video but they're great for line graphs. I'm working on a figure at the minute that needs 4 lines - 2 of which represent magnetic fields, 2 have no magnetic fields. And within each of those I have one low res and one high res simulation. So linestyles, different markers and colours are the mood. Blue and squares for magnetic. Orange and circles for non-magnetic. Solid for low res. Dashed for high res

It seems to me (for what it's worth) that this is the type of thing you can do that differentiates you from other content creators - blending something that we might all be familiar with (coding) and how it applies to your particular area of interest. We might not all do simulations of the Inter Galactic Medium but most of us have tried to create a visualisation to communicate information from a bunch of seemingly random data.
