    I hate to have to tell you that the coaches are totally wrong. The silver Jubilee ran special streamlined coaches, some in articulated sets. At a quick glance the coaches supplied look like ancient Hornby LMS Stanier coaches painted in silver. They really shouldn't be allowed to do this!

  • @jaydee2559
    @jaydee2559 3 года назад

    Hi there! I bought one of these (used) from the model carriage at East Kent Railway - £35. Got it home, like yours, it ran like an absolute dog! Now.. I wasn't totally disappointed by this for the money but i had expected it to run just a bit better. First thing i did was get out the rotary tool and a wire wheel on it and polished the hell out of all the wheels to remove the grime and dirt on them. The motorised ones were a bit more challenging as you need to rotate the wheels round but it wasn't impossible. Got them all wire brushed and then came up a nice silver colour. This massively improved conductivity via the wheels but it was still not running right. Next thing i did was remove the body. This revealed one wire going from the motor to the wheel pickups on the motor bogey and then another two wires going to the dummy bogey. The dummy bogy picks up one polarity very well via the central spindle which makes contact with the front and rear wheel axles. Oddly it misses out the middle one though. The other wire makes contact with a pickup on the side of two wheels - the inner one and the middle one - but not the outer wheel. I disconnected the wire on the motor to it's own wheels (pointless unless it picks up from both polarities) and decided to just use the rear bogey. With some fuse wire (30 amp if memory serves) I soldered it onto the existing contact for the dummy bogey and put a little bend in it so it acts like a spring. Then tucked it in behind the end wheel so that all three wheels could pickup the juice. Inside the bogey i also soldered in some fuse wire onto the existing metallic strip and making it as long as possible, introduced a kink so that it is at an angle but can act as a spring without bending out of shape (the longer the length the better this works). Reassembled, it now works very well. The only problem i had was with the motor being very noisy - i tracked this down to the big round magnet being loose (and consequently hitting the coils when spinning). I glued that in place and now it's quiet although a fair bit slower as i've glued it slightly off centre and so the coils i think are making contact as they go round and experiencing some drag. Anyway this loco despite the two tone grey livery (which i really don't like) has gone from being an old dog that ran like a pile of bricks to being the most reliable in the fleet. It lost it's only traction tyre (should have two) but still runs around very reliably and will still pull a good number of carriages behind it. Prior to it ejecting its traction tyre it would pull anything - with unstoppable force. To put that into context, my sons railway is built on a 6x4ft board so like many who don't have a large room, it's got some pretty tight 3rd radius bends. Despite this, we've had it pull a combination of 28 carriages / trucks behind it. The train was so long that the loco was pretty much following its own tail (no joke). Don't be put off by the traction tyres, they are there to give grip and do a very good job, it's the electrical pickups you need to work on and cleaning up the wheels. Head to the newrailwaymodellers forum and check out my post in the hornby/lima forum for class 92. I'll update it with latest pics in the next few days - might even make a video.
