00 Gauge British Locomotives from my layout, mostly dcc sound fitted models.
Living in the South I have left my LMS roots somewhat and, in recent years, have developed a greater emphasis on Southern models. I still like Midland Region steam and have recently started collecting LNER and Scotrail. I quite like some of the latest modern image locomotives and rolling stock now available. I have never concentrated on just one era and have gone as far back as era 2 to present day. I have around 200 locomotives and a layout, which is 16ft x 4ft .
Apart from model trains I like to visit industrial and transport living museums, visiting heritage railways and all things transport. What's not to like?

Half of my full set arrived today and deserved a short video as I am yet to see many reviews of these sort after Coronation Coaches. The Hornby team have done a superb job. The full rake is quite heavy perhaps around 2kg and likely to require a diecast Hornby Dublo A4 to haul it well without wheel slip The detailing is excellent, as is the lighting with stay alive to avoid any flicker.

Nice mineral wagons.
@kellyashfordtrains2642 thank you Kelly 😊
It is a gimmick, in parts the "smoke" looked good. I would say that not using oil will mean less smell, although I can't remember if my Hornby Pannier in the late 70s was overpowering in the smell department. Of course, you can run out of smoke oil, but water should be easier to find. Thanks for sharing!
@richardskelton5119 it's better than oil, but yes I agree it's perhaps a gimmick, but a +ve one. What we do not know yet is will it still work in 10 years. I've seen some water based steam locos with steam oozing out from safety valves and pistons but they are v expensive and not a mass market product
@@vcs00railway hot water, electronics and fine plastic, fine while it is working ok, but if it goes wrong an expensive mess perhaps. Let's hope it is still good in ten years.
@richardskelton5119 it's cold water technology, but it's still water and electrics, however at least Hornby are trying to be innovative
HOW MANY PUFFS PER REVOLUTION OF THE WHEELS ? I think you mean "Smoke Generator". (Steam is water vapor, and emits from many parts of a steam loco, including the cylinders, and is white in colour !) Smoke puffs from the chimney and if its realistic it should "puff" in time with the revolutions of the driving wheels. Where a two cylinder loco puffs twice per revolution, a 3 cylinder loco 3 times. And of course the "Hush Hush experimental loco was a four cylinder Compound, so 4 puffs per revolution of the Driving wheels. Which also means the models Sound & Smoke emission needs to be timed accordingly, to be correct !!!
@railwaymechanicalengineer4587 the steam here is atomised water vapour, not smoke as such. I will leave Hornby to advise how many steam puffs from model to model. These are at the end of the day models, I would assume intended to convey an extra dimension, not necessarily accurate. I believe the steam is controlled by an optical sensor reading the speed of the driving wheels
@@vcs00railway All the "Smoke Generators" I have come across (available from a number of European manufacturers for decades), use a type of light oil. The model locos chimney normally contains an electrically heated element to make the smoke. Never seen or heard of such an accessory utilising water, because it won't make realistic "smoke".
@railwaymechanicalengineer4587 you are behind the times my friend. The Hornby steam generator uses water not oil
What's not to love about Bobby the Black 5?
Weathering looks terrific mate, quite authentic. Congrats to TMC, great sound too.
@petertate5741 TMC done a superb job on the weathering, delighted with the model
Great video. Where did you get your coaling & water towers from? They look great!
@@Torent6666 it's a Bachmann Scencraft (44-048) Coaling stage I bought about 10 years ago

You had me distracted by, I'm sure I'm correct, Freshford or Fringford Manor on the track opposite. Show me a GWR Manor hard at work, and I'll show you how much I truly love her.
Fringford Manor weathered by TMC, Its not running and I will have to take another look at why this weekend 😢
Poor Fringford Manor needs a new circuit board sadly 😢, hoping Accurascale will send me one so I can get her working properly

Fantastic coaches, and the interior looks sublime. Is it easy to get inside to add passengers?
@@NEVILLEGROVE Hi Steve, yes the interiors look well thought with a lot of careful detail. Ive not yet explored how to gain access. Hopefully not too taxing though Charles VC
Nice coaches and I am glad to see Hornby are improving their packaging as well starting with their newer models.
@BritishRail60062 packaging is excellent on these coaches, a high quality box that is compact
The packaging of these coronation coaches are the same as the new packaging on there locomotives which is really good with lots of foam for protection well done hornby
Absolutely beautiful. I can only wish. Sometimes Hornby can just get things right.
They look good. I would have purchased a set if not already had Golden Age Models set. I suggest you get R3993 Hornby OO Gauge LNER, A4 Class, 4-6-2, 4490 'Empire of India' - Era 3. This is one of the locos actually used to haul the coronation set. Currently at Rails for £190.
@davew2452 , spotted that. Hopefully, the model is heavy enough to haul the eight plus the Beaver tail! It looks to weigh about. 6kg, which may be adequate. I have Bittern and Mallard, both diecast but neither hauled this train. The B12 I used just about manages half the full rake without wheel slip!
@vcs00railway There is a die-cast Dominion of Canada which i have and I am going to usrme this to haul the LNER Coronation Coaches
@andrewmeah3082 makes sense, it needs a diecast loco I think as there is quite a lot of drag and weight to haul
I’m looking forward to someone showing how to open these up and allow the fitting of some passengers
@lordsnooty4138 agreed, I haven't had time to explore that yet. Magnetic roofs would have been perfect, hopefully it's not too difficult though

What you need, to haul the full set, is a modern Hornby A4 engine. The modern Hornby A4s are bigger, heavier and stronger. Only half of your full set of coaches arrived? Not good enough. The whole set should have arrived in one go. Hornby are falling behind on their deliveries, it's clear to see. Better chase up the other half of your coaches, see what's going on. Loved your B12 engine by the way.
@kellyashfordtrains2642 I like my B12, and gave it thr chance of special duties. The remaining coaches arrived today, I need find a heavy A4 loco. I have Mallard as a Hornby Dublo but it's never been removed from the box, not yet!
@@vcs00railway The Mallard was only used for the speed record with the coronation coaches. Two coaches and beavertail removed and dynomometer coach added.
Nice how much are they
@pauljonnson1181 I think the RRP is £149 per pair. Not so easy to find all four from one retailer. Might be worth checking eBay if you are looking for the full set
What happened to the original stock?
@David-g1p-v8k scrapped apart from the Beavertail is preserved, I think stored at the Hornby one to one Museum which is yet to open to the public
@@vcs00railway Both observation cars are in preservation. One is restored to the original LNER Beavertail condition, the other is in the BR style which I've heard is squarer, I'm guessing more like the Pullman observation cars.
@@vcs00railway Used separately for a short time after WW2, so maybe some ealy BR exmples will appear? Maybe . . .
very nice, have been wondering on a rake of these, couldn't run more than a pair of twinsets and maybe the observation car, would want the lot though "just in case" for the future lighting and interiors look good, last time I checked the Hornby site had remarkably little information on them so good to see it working nicely done :)
@aleopardstail thank you, yes Hornby info is not very informative. They are brilliant coaches. The pair of coaches way almost 300g, therefore a full rake will be 1.2kg + the observation car. That is not due out for a couple of weeks. I think there are a few coaches still available but v few full rakes of 8 for sale now
These coaches look superb cannot wait to receive the 4 packs ps the observation coach which i believe will be a couple of weeks behind
Some very fine models! I have three of the L&YR ones myself! Also, how come one of the six wheelers is missing its center wheels?
@Hiawatha_Productions , well spotted! I removed that wheel just for the video because it was tending to derail on my track
@@vcs00railway Alright, thanks for the clarification!
You want the other J70 tram pack as that has the real Toby as Toby is based on No.127/7127/8221/68221
Superb, Ive bought loads of Ellis Clark trains they must have a professional packing person as the way the items are rapped etc is like something out of Buckingham Palace shop. Great seller and shop, one day I will visit Skipton.. Great vid 👍🏻
@hovermotion it's my first experience of them. I'm headed Skipton end of the month and will definitely call in to the shop

One of the main downsides of the Rapido version is that you cannot change the couplings without breaking the model which is a downside for many
@pemboart true, if you didn't want the nem coupling they can be removed on the Rapido but there are no pockets. For me, what I liked about the Ellis Clark is the rivets really stand out, and I'm not a rivet counter! They just look better on the model, not that the Rapido is poor, 🤔 but it's a similar RRP
@@vcs00railway Try removing the NEM screw without physically breaking the bottom detail. You can't. I even emailed Rapido about this directly who confirmed that it can't be done. Big design flaw in my opinion.
@pemboart the Ellis Clark includes vacuum cylinders which can be fitted if using chain type couplings.
I got that same model, and I loved the packaging too. However have the Rapido version too and quite like that as well. I would recommend either item.
@jkirk888 they are both good models, I've kept both although I think the EC has the edge
Nice, but I don't like diesels.
@@kellyashfordtrains2642 I know!
RAILWAY LAW - & THE ADDITIONAL COST OF ANY DCC PARTS ! Until the Law was changed in 1978, interior lighting in railway carriages was not allowed during daylight hours (except for table & reading lights controllable by passengers). It was of course part of the Guards duties to switch train lights on and off for the passage of a tunnel. Further they gave Guards periscopes or lookouts, as Guards were also responsible for watching for lineside signals. These lighting regulations were in connection with the laws covering the duties of train Guards (who were called Guards because they were the train security Guard). Which did not normally allow a Guard to leave the vicinity of his Guards van, (as monies & mails might be carried) !!! So interior lights in Model carriages are virtually useless unless you operate your layout in the pitch darkness. Not itself a good idea, as sooner or later you will damage your layout or rolling stock. I think its time to put many of these absurd and unrealistic "gimmicks" to bed. Especially when a non "DCC" or "non Gimmick" laden version is not made available. This especially afflicts Locomotives, as I for one am sick and tired of having to remove the troublesome wiring method applied to all locos for the benefit of DCC users. And all that useless DCC junk adds at least 20% to the retail price !!!!
@railwaymechanicalengineer4587 I guess the manufacturer's can't please everyone. Personally, I run my trains far more in the evening when coach lighting would be on. As the Hattons coaches are supplied without lights, they cover either view point. If one doesn't want lighting, no need to fit it
One thing that is noticeable is the unconfortable ride the passengers get. On the real trains the buffers would be touching or preloaded by the connecting chain. On the model it would be good to have the 'D' 's of the coupling in contact at all times. This may be achieved by bending the hook section slightly to reduce clearance, use magnetic couplers, or a solid link replacing the couplings between coaches (drawbar). OK for short trains.
Buffers are RETRACTED out of use on stock fitted with Buckeye couplings, as the buffers cause derailments in curves if not retracted on such stock. What do you think the Pullman Rubbing Bar" is for ????
much better to have the L&YR engine running with these in my opinion. I opted for the GER, LYR, Midland & GCR from this batch. Was rather hoping for batch 3 with SDJR & Cali to finish my LMS, LNER connections, but alas. I have the GNR, LNER, LMS, LNWR & LMS from batch 1
@chrisalan1540 S&DJR would be lovely. I kept 5 of the Hornby version, and ordered the Rapido bogie S&DJR plus rather too many! 😃
Why didn't you buy the carriages fitted with lights? You wouldn't have had to do it yourself. I'm sorry, but I don't approve of two Guard's Vans being used. You only need one. The Luggage Van ought to be at the back of the consist. I'm not keen on the L & Y tank engine, even though the livery matches. Essentially, liveries don't have to match. A mismatched LMS Jinty would suit the coaches just as well, or a Tiny Terrier Tank Engine. Small tender engines suit the coaches too. I have a pair of 4-wheeled Hornby GWR coaches without lights, and a pair of LNER Teak 6-wheeled coaches with lights. Factory fitted lights work a bit better than lights fitted by you.
@kellyashfordtrains2642 hattons stopped pre fitting lights so no choice. It's quite relaxing. Poor unloved 2-4-2 L&Y needs to have a little run out....
@@vcs00railway Well I'm sorry but I don't approve of your guard's departure protocol - surely he should be calling "all aboard" only after he has blown his whistle and held his green flag at arm's length... Some commenters shouldn't be taken too seriously here :P 2 guard coaches and luggage at the front is the way I like my 4-wheel sets too, so I guess I'm also wrong. That consist looks absolutely mint, and if that's the only way to get working lights it is absolutely worth it. Is the flickering part of the circuit? And, have you considered changing the couplers for something with less of a gap?
@PalmersPhotos 😁 my son works for the railway so I ought to be better with the "all aboard " The lights do have a small stay alive capacitor but it's one size too small to carry enough charge. I changed one on another coach and the lights don't then flicker. I haven't yet changed the couplings to magnetic because with non bogie coaches magnetic can cause derailment. Since the video I have glossed the purple umber livery leaving the brown unglossed and it looks stunning and more like some of the stock photos I've seen. Glad you liked the video
@@vcs00railway I agree about the magnetic couplings, even on the gentler curves on the club layout the Genesis coaches would buffer lock and derail, however, the Hornby 6 wheelers not so bad. It's the stark white roofs that I hate. My SECR set from batch 1 have been toned down and weathered, but not uniformly across the rake, and they look so much better. As a rule I try to eliminate pure white and most dense black from my layout generally. Ok, so they aren't strictly accurate for any particular Company, but for most of us compromises get made as life is so short. 00 gauge is wrong and some folk think that some train consists are erroneous, but it doesn't bother me.
@MrDavil43 quite right, these coaches are not necessarily strictly accurate, but on balance they look the part, and the livery application is excellent. I agree with you about the white roofs
Next time, stick with the steam engine all day, Better than a stinky diesel all the way.
