Hobie Tandem Island DIY Dog Ramp by Rockin Robin Sails
I will show you the dog ramp I made for my Hobie tandem island. This is made out of PVC, rubber mat, and life jackets. Works great.
Check out my Google + page: bit.ly/1vrzrWW
Today we are on Lake Del Valle Reservoir in Livermore California
If you get hungry, check out my cooking channel at: ruclips.net/user/cookingmexicanrecipe
Please share this video if you know of anyone who might want to make a dog ramp for their Hobie Tandem Island or Adventure Island.
This dog ramp has two levels so that the lower level is below the surface of the water. This makes it easy for the dog to climb on it.
That bottom level has a 3/4 inch pvc frame with a rubber mat attached to it. The upper level is also frame...

    Thanks for this video. Imagine my surprise when the Mexican chef starts talking about Hobie Tandems ! I have just bought a second hand one here and am trying to figure out hoiw to move it around. I am based in Thailand, so spares and custom gear is an issue. Just a question - did you buy those cradles from the Hobie dealer or did you somehow manage to utilise something else? Again great videos - I have watched the one on rigging the sail etc also so far and will watch the rest soon !!

      Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I spend most of my time cooking but I need to get back to sailing! To answer your question about the cradles. I bought mine from Hobie. Glad you found the videos helpful! I find that putting the TI on a trailer to be the best way to move it around. I like to sail in lakes on warm days! Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Thanks so much Robin for the info on the sail rigging. My 1st time out last Saturday I had the exact same thing as you. After furling in the sail all the way I still had 2 foot of sail left and we were in 20mph winds. Needless, to say it made me nervous as we were coming to dock. Ended up standing up in the kayak to unhook the sail! :) Now I know the solution. Thanks again and have a Hobie Day!

      Hi Patrick, 20 mph winds and a sail out 2 ft. can get pretty exciting! Glad i was able to help you out. Where are you sailing your boat with that kind of wind? I stick to lakes mostly.

      Rockin Robin Sails Sorry, for the late reply. Had been on vacation with TI, first on Lake Michigan and then to the Outer Banks, NC during hurricane Matthew. The Hurricane was originally not supposed to go that far North but by the time we got there it had reached NC. We arrived at 3:30 on Saturday October 8th and they closed the road to the condo at 10:00pm. So we spent the night and into Sunday in 70-80mph winds. A little to much for sailing and kiteboarding, hahahaha. By Monday things were back to normal but the road to the condo was still closed and did not reopen until Thursday, so no visitors could arrive or leave. Did get to take the TI out 2 times on the Sound side(the shallow side, not the ocean side) of Hatteras Island. In answer to your question, we were out on Lake Clinton in Lawrence, Kansas(home of KU Jayhawks, if you are into college basketball).

    I usually sail from the front position because due to permanent injuries I have difficulty reaching forward to operate the drop keel. Do you know of, or have any suggestions, on how the keel can be operated down-up from the rear position without getting out of your seat e.g some home-made pole or device?

    • @RockinRobinSails
      @RockinRobinSails 8 лет назад

      Interesting question. I think you could make up some sort of pole to do that. I will have to look into that. Have you had any luck figuring that out?

    • @MegaPeedee
      @MegaPeedee 8 лет назад

      No, not yet. I was thinking of perhaps changing the knob on the keel to a RAM mount and then having a corresponding female mount that encapsulates it. The next problem to overcome would be how to be able to lift the knob out of the detent so that it could be positioned forward or aft (Incorporate a pivot point on the pole somehow?). The problem after that would be whether to have the hand pole going from the rear to the knob/RAM mount fixed or free, and how and where to stow it. I think this sort of arrangement, or similar, would make life easier for anyone to operate the boat from the rear seat. As we get older, injuries aside, we become somewhat less nimble.

      +Jim Len Jim, thank you. I have not sailed the TI by myself but you probably wouldn't have a problem. I've seen others here on youtube who go out fishing by themselves and do just fine. It's always nice to take someone with you, in my opinion. I guess it just depends on how often you will be going by yourself. My opinion is get the TI for more options. BTW you can control the TI from either seat so that is not a concern.

    Hi Robin, Thanks for the reply. I live in southern Connecticut and will be sailing in Long Island Sound most of the time. Some local guys cautioned me to try to avoid submerging the wheel bearings and electrical components of the trialer in salt water. A lot of people do that and have issues after a number of years. The boat ramps here are on the steep side and I can't slide the boat up on the trailer alone. Thought I would use the mast support to wrap a strap around and hook the winch to that strap.

    • @RockinRobinSails
      @RockinRobinSails 9 лет назад

      +Scott Mokoski Hi Scott, salt water can be a problem. I wouldn't rely on that little clip on the bow to winch up the boat on a steep ramp. I like your idea about using the mast support. Seems like a stronger point. If I were you I would definitely have the wheel bearings repacked every season for sure with the salt water. I suppose rinsing the trailer with fresh water after every use would be a great idea but you probably already know that! :) Good luck and enjoy sailing in Long Island Sound. Must be beautiful there!

      BlueprintDK You can sail the TI from either seat as both have a set up. Big guys that like to have their weight in the rear seat just tie the end of the furling line to the end of the sail line in the rear. That way they can easily pull in the furling line when needed. Does that make sense?

    Thank you for the videos. A couple of questions. Do you know what speed you were going in this video? Do you think the TI would accommodate someone 6'2" comfortably? My wife and I are considering purchasing one for family recreation. I think it would be a great all around boat for fishing and sailing that we could get a lot of use out of on a frequent basis.

    • @RockinRobinSails
      @RockinRobinSails 9 лет назад

      Jeff Singleton Hi Jeff, I don't know what speed we were going. I've seen people post that they can go up to 12 knots. My son is 6' 3" and he went on the TI with my husband and I and he sat on the trampolines and did just fine. I think you would be fine in the back seat. My husband is 6' and doesn't have a problem. I love this boat so you will get a thumbs up from me! I love having the peddles (drives) as this makes this boat so versatile. You can go anywhere whether you have wind or not. It also makes launching and docking very easy because of it.

    Great video and well done. This is a valuable service to new TI owners that Hobie should provide. I'd like to add one important tip, tie the end of the furling line to the end of the rear mainsheet line. That way when sailing from the rear seat you will always have ready access to the short furling line which may otherwise be very difficult to reach.

    • @RockinRobinSails
      @RockinRobinSails 9 лет назад

      James Luisi That's a great tip and I've heard of it before but forgot about it. Would you only attach the furling line to mainsheet when sailing in the rear seat?

    Fantastic! The cross bars supporting the cradles, are they 2 by 4's or welded on steel? Also the cradle in the stern looks like it has extra padding to support the ama's? Great video.

      Bill Minton, Jr. Hi Bill, the cross bars supporting the cradles are metal which were welded on. Lasts a lot longer! We did put extra padding on the cradle near the stern. The ama wasn't touching it so we built it up a little. Those were great questions. Thanks for asking.

      Bill Minton, Jr. Hi Bill, yes I am planning to make a video on the trailer we altered for the TI. There is a trailer you can buy specifically for it also and I will explain the pros and cons to doing what we did. Stay tuned!

    Watched all the videos you have on sailing, so now I'm all caught up. I have never sailed before, but I'm betting that I'd like it very much! I've always wanted to get a pontoon boat because I like to go slowly across the water. I can see where sailing can be exhilarating. Looking forward to more of these sailing videos Robin. Cheers!!!

      T-ROY COOKS Hi Troy, this is probably one of the easiest boats to sail. It is very stable which is why fisherman love it. You can stand up when the amas are out (which is almost all the time) and it's solid. You would have a very difficult time capsizing this boat. I absolutely love it! Thanks for stopping in over here!

    Nice looking boat you have there Robin. Looking good so far, let me check out the other videos. I'll be kind and not comment on each of them so you don't get bombarded with comment notifications from Ole T-Roy! LOL

    Thank you for a nice video. As a new owner of an older AI, I would really appreciate a video explaning how the sailing controls work on the yak. Thank you.

      Michael Shin Hi Michael. Congratulations on your "new" AI! I'll bet you will be fishing from that. Have you ever sailed before? So you want to know how the sail lines work, how to open up the sail and furl it closed? This boat is amazing! You are going to love it.

      Yes. I have been on the water with it but without the sail. I don't know where all the lines attach and the basic operational directions for sailing. Thank you.

    I just posted a new video on my hack for an easier mast installation. Since I don't have a lot of upper body strength, this helps me keep that mast in an upright position even in windy conditions. This cost less than $8.00 It does require another person's help but this is a Hobie Tandem Island and you will probably have someone else with you anyway! I'll put them to work!
