DELL VOSTRO 5471 MOTHERBOARD - FAULTY

This is a Dell Vostro 5471 motherboard that I bought as part of a bunch of faulty motherboards from a local store. I have no further description except that this board is "faulty" which makes troubleshooting a bit more difficult. Since I don't have any indication of what the fault is, I try to just connect up some power and see if it powers on. Please post any comments you have below or mail me...

First thing i'm testing on a faulty board, and the easily.. is the cmos battery.. but was not the fault here ;)
Excellent work ❤🎉
Hi ! Did you simply remove the bad capacitor or replaced it ?
Thanks for watching. It is usually best practice to find out the value of the blown capacitor (either by checking schematic or testing another similar parallel capacitor), but generally the laptop will work without the capacitor.
A very clever troubleshooting ! but too much damage on this board, anyway very informative...
very clever work ! A thermal camera is a must have !
Gosh, every repair is a bad cap. Why do I always get dead PCH and other cr@ap?
Oh believe me I get them too, I just tend not to use for content. I am conscious that there is a danger that we keep fixing the same problem every week though.
Thank you very much for your video and excellent explanation.. Keep up 👍...
love ur vids so much sir much love an appreciation to u and i love the knowledge u have to tech us tysm behalf of every one in here keep the good work up sir we love u tysm
The way you explain fault finding is fantastic, keep up the great work.
Can you please make a video on dell precision 5510/5520/XPS9550,9560...thanks
I actually bid on two Dell laptops during the week for content, but the only auctions that I won were the HPs. Dell laptops just seem to be more in demand!
@therepairshare673 sure they are, especially XPS & Precision series... BTW i really appreciate how you explain with graphics... Keep up the good work😊
Thumbs up
Thanks for watching all my videos, more to follow at the weekend.
Thanks for the knowledge sir
Excellent
Thanks for the knowledge sir
I really like your teaching style. Excellent presentation
Excellent sir
Excellent
Thank you so so much for this video! It saved me few quid for mechanic and i did it myself, thanks a lot!
Excellent
Good job with these vids. Hails from Finland 🙂
Excellent tutorial. Thank you.
Alway nice to see your videos , Thanks
I really enjoy the diagramming. your method really helps my understanding of the circuits. i was wondering if you would repair that after seeing how many blown components you found.
Hi Everyone, In this video I cover the PWM IC and power MOSFET. I'm trying to build it up section by section to hopefully have one final video with a complete run through of the entire SMPS power supply. When I first started doing this, I didn't think it would be possible, due to most of the components being through hole components. But I am happy with the results so far, and I will keep pushing on. Next we will move on to the transformer and rectification of the high frequency PWM voltages on the low voltage DC output. I also think I need to get some sort of animation for showing the switching on and off of the power MOSFET. I have bids in on some "not powering on" Dell laptops on ebay so hopefully I will win one or two of those and that will provide us some good content for next week. thanks.
Love to see the resistors in parallel calculation. Makes me nostalgic.
Thanks! Very informative.
Keep up with your excellent troubleshooting work! Thank you!
Thank you for your very informative fault finding technique with great visuals making it so much more easier to understand 😀
❤
Good call. Too much damage to bother repairing it.
Great job. Thank you!
Hi Alex, thanks for your comment. Check out my channel this weekend. I will be uploading a new video of an SMPS repair, and there will be some good learning in it.
👍
I'm in the same boat as we speak with a Lenovo that also had shorted the LDO and burned EC (among other things). I had a board with the same EC but obviously different EC firmware on it so now I'm with a dead laptop that I need to get one of these ISP programmer on my hands and give it a try. Do you have a programmer and the EC FW? I don't think these EC are self programmed through BIOS (mine is a IT8586E) even if their internal SPI is empty. It will be a very interesting video if you have a programmer, keen to watch it.
Hey Nick, hope all is well. I have purchased a blank IT8227E-128 EC, so my choices as I see it are: 1. Possibly program USB download to USB boot stick or possibly it may program itself using EC BIOS. (Basically exhaust all options which do not require the IC programmer.) 2. Just buy the IC programmer and put the program on the new IC myself. It is possible to purchase the IC pre-programmed, but they are very expensive - And I dont want to spend too much money on this board, as there may be other faults. At least if I purchase the IC programmer, I can use it in the future.
Sorry one more thing. When searching around the topic I found that Electronic Repair School did program a similar Lenovo Legion laptop using the IT8227E-192 Super IO. Maybe I will buy the same IC programmer. ruclips.net/video/wLGj6EM42_g/видео.html
@@therepairshare673 I'm fine, thanks! I'm not sure about this EC but it also depends on the m/b design. It may act as master in the SPI so in that case it gets the firmware from an external Flash (of course it must be blank) or it needs external programmer. SVOD is top-notch and I'm also having my eyes on this and the only thing keeping me back is it's price. On the other hand, for 250€ you get everything you need to start programming almost any EC out there plus hundreds of others. Personally, If money wasn't an issue, I would buy SVOD. It's an investment if you are seriously getting into repair thing. It would be also a great video since I see you are very frustrated for the content you make. I think your videos are very uniquely presented and you are very methodical, which is very important for someone who is here to learn repairs.
@@nikolaskallianiotis8622 yeah I saw the SVOD when Sorin was using it. I currently have only a CH341a for BIOS, and nothing to program a Super IO. €250 is the price I saw quoted for it also, I'd better check my piggy bank. 😞
@@therepairshare673 I know, 250 is a lot of money for a programmer but then again, you help them to continue support their hardware with software which is their main differentiation point compared to other programmers.
I ts worth noting that the ID pin must be working for the laptop to work and has to be present usually if this pin is shorted or connected wrong it leads to a short circuit in th IO IC as the ID pin is connected directly to this IC.This usually happens if the power adapter is not genuine Lenovo one.
You ll get it programmed by someone else or do it yourself?
I like to follow yours vidéos, so well made ! I'm curious how you're gonna do to program your new IC ?
Key measures to understand failure analysis: (5:20) and (10:10 and 10:45). Excellent work. Thank you very much for sharing. Two thousand sincere congratulations. All the best.
Hey, can you explain "There is circle in top"? can we identify if ec chip needed to be programmed by that?
❤🎉excellent.
nice detailed run down of how to find faults keep up the good work.
i learn circuitry better watching your videos. really enjoy them. thanks
Very informative and helpful video. Thank you, @therepairshare673
Great video. I love our difference in the words we use. You say "plug out" while I say "unplug". Keep up the great work. Happy 2K subs.
Hey Everybody, Still having difficult getting good content. What I'm trying to do with the few laptops that I do get is to squeeze every bit of learning out of them. So, sometimes where there might be a more direct route to repair, I am deliberately taking the slow route to try and include anything I think might be helpful. Please like and subscribe if you like what I do. Just passed 2K subscribers, thanks to all who subscribed (and thanks to Dana below for reminding me).
I liked very much the content. Do not be so hard on yourself. I have 2 questions. Are you going to program the IO or ask someone to do it? Why in the heck Aliexpress appears on spanish? Are you learning languages while repairing laptops? xDDD
@@francescvilches3967 Hi, I am contemplating what to do with regard to programming it. I think I may just purchase an IO Programmer at this stage, in order that I can complete some of these videos. Aliexpress seems to have overestimated my lingual capabilities, but I think the store selling the IC was actually in Spain.
Awesome video.... Keep going. Make more videos
i really enjoy your videos bro....awsome work
I have one mosfet and one inductor faulty on the 19V Rail, but I cannot find the correct parts. Can you help me?
Hi, if you want to take a picture of the input section and send to therepairshare@gmail.com , I will give you my opinion.
Get a thermal camera. They are affordable now. I bought a used gen 2 flir one. For 120$. But im guessing the thermal will show heat spot on ene.
I actually just bought a HT-01, for 120, in the last few weeks. I wonder if I still have the board to try it out on this.
That was a genius idea to work with colors. Thank you for the best instruction channel in laptop repair of RUclips.
I see a bulging capacitor.
