Navigating Nietzels
США
Добавлен 14 авг 2020
We're Karly and Evan Nietzel! High school sweethearts from the Midwest and adventurers at heart. We started out as best friends who found fun in bike rides and paddle boarding together, and now we're living the married life in sunny south Florida with our pup, Ripley.
We've had our fair share of adventure over the last nine years, but we're gearing up for the biggest adventure yet...America's Great Loop! Follow along as we navigate this journey from the planning stages to actually setting off on the loop.

"Nothing EVER Goes As Planned!" 😡 The Final Countdown Before Our Great Loop Begins
Our final to-do list has us itching to leave and head north, but not before we get a few things done. In this video, Evan changes the engine oil and the heat exchanger zinc, adds carbon monoxide detectors, and gives Ripley her spa!

BOAT TOUR | Meet Our 1985 36-Foot Marine Trader Europa for the GREAT LOOP
Your so amazing! Were getting more excited on finishing our 65' power catamaran rebuild to start our adventure too!
Carbon monoxide detectors should be a foot off the floor, not on the ceiling.
What was the resolution of the fuel tank leak? Did I miss that in a prior video?
Great to see you doing your tasks - thanks!
Thanks for sharing. Patience is a virtue…right 😅
Great video, thanks. Your making it happen.
Change transmission fluid
You two produce great videos. Looking forward to following your loop.
Looking forward to meeting both of you when you come down the Illinois River and stop in Grafton, fantastic marina with lots of great restaurants and wineries
Just a suggestion change the carbon monoxide detectors at least I level not up on the ceiling. Get another for the Galley in Mount it eye level as well.
Every time I would enter my engine room I would get my clothing dirty, usually with oil, no matter how careful I was. To avoid ruining more clothing, I started covering up with lightweight tyvek painters coveralls. Cheap, durable, and the perfect solution.
What's the status of the fuel tanks?
Your awesome!! Were also in the midst of a huge refit of our 65 catamaran, and its so encouraging to see others doing everything like this! Keep those updates coming!
As a career Soldier, it's great to see Ripley get back in regulation with that haircut.
Put a second in the engine room
Is your engine a 120 or a 135 ?
Always change your oil filter when you change oil, cheap insurance. The gaskets on your heat exchanger end caps look dried out, you might want to carry a spare set of end caps, pretty cheap item.
and pour a little oil in the new filter
We love a good checklist! Way to go on the progress🥳
Oil filter? Can you make a fluffy pillow with Ripley's fur? BOW is great. You also may want to checkout Sailorman which is close to BOW in Ft. Lauderdale. (Barry-Z-Boater)
MV Sam McGee will depart FMB Feb 1 crossing Okeechobee on our way north to the Chesapeake for 3rd summer. Hope our wakes cross
Shout out Jupiter!!
Truly so inspired by yall and your journey
I was thinking the second bedroom would make a great office space until I started reading the comments. Excited to see what you guys decide
Telling Adam I want this boat!
Loving the new table and chairs!
When are you planning to leave? It seems to me that it is way too early too start.?
Beautiful blessings
Hope you are able to find out why you a blowing fuses on your heater. They should not have a big electrical draw and you will be much more comfortable once you have it running.
Florida in winter: Wet, windy and relatively cold. Each cold front can be dicy on the water.
Fix the heater ASAP. Keep your first mate comfortable is very important
Your or the boat WILL NEVER be 100%….GOOOOOOOO…..You are in the US with parts at every town…….
Love that you’re keeping it real👍🏼 We have two pups, and one is a whiny doodle that doesn’t like to be left either, so we know the feeling! We always leave ‘boredom buster’ type toys that you fill with treats or kibble, or lick mats to keep them distracted and entertained.
It would have been much easier to tie up to a dock for your preparation...looks like a lot of work dinghying back & forth with no life vests on all you 3😅. You should have all gone with Victron gears with LiFePO4 battery upgrade instead of mixing it with cheap Renogy stuff!
I’m enjoying your beginning your Joyage. We had sailboats for 50 years and the last few years out trawler Sam McGee. We are currently in Ft Myers Beach. We will begin our return to the Chesapeake for the summer on March 1, crossing Ockechobee waterway. Hope our wakes cross. I just purchased Mantus new snap anchor hook for the anchor bridle. I suggest you check it out. Stew and Ingrid on M/V Sam McGee.
Hey guys, what camera set up do you use and assume you then have a mobile wifi set up? Looking forward to your travels.
A propane "Mr Buddy Heater" works great. uses a small propane Bottle its very compact and easy to use. Also a 12v heated blanket helps with keeping your bed warm and not damp.
I've lived in FL. (about an hour north of you) for 42 years. This January has been the longest, ugliest weather month I have experienced here. You did a great job all week Carly! (sp)
Keeping it real: You are in some of the easiest conditions you'll experience on the loop right now. The sea will potentially throw everything it has at you and it will make you believe it has at some point. That's a reality you need to be prepared for.
Can we get the pork recipe?
As far as your diesel heater when electric motors sit for a long time without spinning the bearings in them can become stiff and bind up the motor causing a overload in current. With the power off of course sometimes you can spin the shaft a little bit to loosen up those bearings. Worth a try before you replace the motor.
Just A note ,Your Generator is not allowed in the marine environment,Your insurance won't cover you...
and it could walk away
It's good you had such a crappy week (with the promise of more to come, I'm sure) because the good stuff will seem ever greater for your struggles. Wishing you all the best. We enjoy your videos and we LOVE Ripley!! Julie & Bill Johnson
Have you ever thought about getting a Eurohelm for your dinghy? We got one for ours and it makes a big difference (and still light enough that I can hoist the dinghy).
What a great vid, bad times always make the good times better, shake and bake is your friend Ms Karly
Hi guys…loved this episode! We have been watching your channel for a while as we get ready to start our own adventure. We loved the honesty in this post…getting ready for a major life change is hard! We just purchased our boat (a 1997 Grand Banks 46) and spent the last week on board, getting things ready. We are based in St. Simon’s Island, Ga and have a goal of starting our loop in April. Last week was freezing! We move aboard with our dog on February 15 and everything has been overwhelming. We plan to start our own channel soon to document our travels and I hope it’s half as good as yours. Good luck and maybe we will see along the loop. Our boat is Esmeralda and she has a green hull so she should be easy to spot.
Where on St Simon’s? We kept our trawler at Brunswick Landing Marina.
@ we are at Morningstar
Very cool to see in this day and age a young couple can structure their life in a way to be able to do this trip. I have been planning this trip for many years myself and I'm not sure I would have been able to pull it off in my younger years. Maybe with remote work being a option that would have been a game changer. Now we wait for our last little bird to leave the nest. But we have learned so much about this trip from books and videos just like yours. So, thank you. Never too old to learn and never too young to teach. The Great Loop 2026 ;)
To help Rippley while you are away radio with easy soothing music or records your voice.
and toys
Which one of you are doing your editing and what application do you use? Did you learn on your own or do you have some background in video or photography?
I do! (Karly) I became interested in video editing at a young age so I taught myself on basic software in middle school then ended up going to college for Journalism & Business where I learned more professionally. I use all Adobe products so I edit video in Premiere Pro & am dabbling in After Effects.
This was a wonderfully honest, real-life, real-time depiction of the many frustrations involved with Life On A Boat. Everything is twice as hard - usually just little stuff, but it adds up, and rain makes even the simplest tasks particularly miserable. Gotta say, though, if that’s Karly being incredibly frustrated and overwhelmed, then you are well qualified for life onboard, as I think you looked pretty darned calm and rational. Bummer that you had to say goodbye to the car on a gloomy day - doesn’t make it any easier. (BTW, some looper friends of mine have a neat trick when they have to leave their golden retriever alone on board - they play their RUclips episodes so he can hear their voices and watch them - and himself 😊)
@@navigatingnietzels thanks for the reply, I thought you might have had some video training, the window-shade-reveal was a giveaway. 😊 Have you watched any of my great loop RUclips videos series? I think they could be a good source for y’all. MV_Checkmate
Solar and lithium is definitely the way to go 👌 Hope to see yall along the loop this year. Our boats on the hard in Ft Pierce currently. I've been doing solar since 2017 on RVs and have a ABYC Electrical Marine Tech certification if yall have any questions 🍻 -Tom
oh and awesome job on the panel mounting
