How to Spin Dog Fur Into Yarn: Theo the Samoyed Floof
i think if i were to end up living somewhere that gets cold enough for me to feel comfortable owning a samoyed, i would try SOO hard to have one. alas, i am a texan so like. not really in the cards for me. i just really adore these dogs!! would be really cool to be able to learn how to do this properly
As a recent crocheter I’ve been shocked by the price of even plastic yarn let alone wool so I’ve started having fantasies of alpaca farms but I’m not a farm girlie. However I am a dog girlie so now you’ve changed my life and I’ll be picturing a fantasy of a herd of Samoyeds. Lol(can’t afford either herd but I feel like my fantasy has reached the next level thanks to you)😅💜
💜
Absolutely fascinating. I dont think my dog has the right fur type, but my husband and I have joked for years about spinning his fur. I love this - and even the fact that you dye it (Im assuming with plant dyes like onions skins, etc??). Cool AF!
If you don’t make him a little coat out of his own coat🥺😭
Precious !! Happy New Year from USA! ❤🙏✝️👑
Wow! Really Nice! Thank you for sharing! God bless you! ❤️🙏✝️👑
Does it stink? Is it soft? Does it attract bugs? Shed? Thats all i would need to know. Fur is fur and ive always wanted a fur coat.
11:05 so that's how clouds are made.
A really beautiful and well groomed dog.
If you wanted to the small bits that aren’t good for spinning make excellent stuffing for pillows or what ever instead of polyester. They sell the short bits from sheep shearing for the same purposes by the bag. It’s called wool bolus.
This really is some white people shit
Now I want to get this type of dog solely to knit with their fur. That is not an ethical reason and I need to not do that.
I have the sudden urge to get a heavy shedder doggo now :3
The dog sniffing the balls of shed like: Dis me?
IT'S SO FLUFFY I'M GONNA DIE!
This was super cool and u made the process look less intimidating. When u spin the wooden dowel, do u always spin in the direction for the entire time? And over time when the finished product gets more fluffy, does it not come apart/shed? Can it be washed? Thank you!!!
*same direction
I do go in the same direction with the twist in all my projects just to be sure. I think there are some people who twist in other ways for other things or it may be a preference thing. not sure! It doesn't come apart but it is delicate depending on the size of string that results. So with a more chunky string, the more robust it will be. It can be washed, but with cold water :)
Sooo excited to see this vid - an excellent example of how to do this without all the expensive equipment! TY sooo much for creating this video 💗
Thanks so much!
What an excellent job you did presenting your craft! Well done. As a shepherd and a spinner, please allow me to correct a little bit of terminology. First is the word wool. The only animal that produces wool is a sheep. Theo's fiber is fur and hair, but he does not produce wool. Even alpacas and llamas do not make wool, they make alpaca and llama fiber! 🙂 Only sheep make wool. The tube/roll of fiber that you are making with your slicker brush carding tools is called a rolag, not roving. Roving is produced by a large-scale carder, and is similar to a continuous rolag that never ends as long as the carder has fiber to process. Last, the tool that you are using for your spinning is called a drop spindle. Another commenter has pointed out that you are using your spindle upside down compared to most other spinners. Normally the weight is at the bottom. But that's fine, whatever works for you! You're obviously doing a fine job. Best of luck, keep on loving fiber, and loving Theo too! 😀👍
Thanks for the commenting! Appreciate the craft! Very cool to have an actual shepherd watch/comment on the video! I did learn this with the first video, and now corrected it to "chiengora" in the second video. Learning so much. :)
I have 2 shelties, and my other one is 11 years old. I want to create something with her fur before she's gone... I already lost my whippet boy, I only have his collars. Thank you for this video, will be trying this out
110% do Theo passed away earlier this year and I slept every night with the pillow and blanket. Meant so much <3
Imagine having a little bit of knitwear made after your late dog? It would be very treasured in a way just a locket of fur couldn't be
Theo passed away earlier this year and I slept every night with the pillow and blanket. Meant so much <3
I want to knit a sweater with my dogs fur, and I want to tell people that my sweater is made from my dogs, but I feel people will think it's weird instead of cool :[
It depends who the people are and cool they are lol
Wow Great work !!
Thanks so much for the comment!
I've been looking into tanning some animal skins to leather, and some people were asking what they do with the fur that they remove. That's when I thought about how wool is turned into yarn. It's good to know that these can be done even though I'll probably never do either (sadly). I wonder if this would work with deer fur since it's hollow and brittle.
Good to know, eh!?
Thank you for this lesson! How did you get the skein to come off the niddy-noddy in one clean circle like that? I just tried felting my first spindle's worth of spun malamute fur, but it got all tangled coming off the niddy-noddy, and a few chunks fell off and some of the spin has loosened quite a bit in many places, especially during the process of slamming it on the towel. Still pretty fuzzy too. I'm also having trouble getting the spindle to spin fast like you - it wants to start spinning the other way fairly quickly. I'm going to keep trying, but would love additional tips if you have them. The yarn is quite pretty, assuming it holds together!
Try to use ties in sections of the skein before you take it off the niddy-noddy. it should keep the strings away from eachother and prevent tangling! Seems like the twist could have been a bit tighter if it falls off in the felting post-twist setting. Once you try to spin the spindle, try to put it between your legs more quickly so you have time to process the twist? Or try drawing a bit more fur while twisting? Trial and error, eh?! Keep up the great work!
How do you keep it in balls of floof? Or does shedding fur behave differently than just regular fur?
Not sure what you mean by balls of floof? I usually keep the fur in bags loose from his shed. I don't cut the fur off. I imagine when it's cut, it has a sharper tip which would mean a bit more scratching but could work none the less
If you knit a sweater would it shrink after the felting process??
Only in hot water! A bit of shrinkage depending on the amount of felting will happen. Gentle and minimal heat if you don't want to shrink it :)
Does the yarn shed badly ? About to do this with my boys fluff
Not really! Once I felt it, it takes the shedding out of it. Think kind of like you're matting the fur into itself so it becomes stronger :)
Thank you so much for posting this! I crochet and had saved my bichons fur hoping to learn how to do this. He sadly passed at 15 years old, and now am looking forward to spinning bags of his wooly for. What a perfect way to keep him close forever. You did a great job demonstrating too, thank you so much❤
It's so good to have! What a beautiful way to remember him. Theo passed away earlier this year and I hugged the pillow every night to sleep <3
Thank you:)
You're welcome!
This is very cool! Thank you for sharing ❤
Glad you liked it!
This is absolutely amazing 😊. Do you sell any of your pieces ? If so please let us know I would be so interested in purchasing an item for myself ❤.
Thanks for the comment! I don't sell anything, but I do cheerish and keep them because Theo passed away earlier this year. So glad I spun his fur and get to keep a bit of him around <3
I am having a hard time getting my spun yarn to set in the hot water. It keeps untwirling afterwards. Do you think my water is simply not hot enough?
Try with hoter water and try with more twist. As long as it sets the twist enough to get into a ball, you'll be able to knit or use it :)
This is incredible!! I wonder if it would be possible to do this with my German Shepherd's fur? Her undercoat is pretty short, but its a beautiful cream color and sooo soft.
It would depend on the length! Try twisting some of the fur in your fingers and see if it makes a string that doesn't break.
@theothesammy I had someone else tell me the same thing so I did. And unfortunately it doesn't 😔 so I was thinking about trying to felt it.
Hello, really love your video❤ I have 2 little rabbits (their fur is quite thin and not long) and wanna use their fur to make yarn. Is all the process same ss handling Theo's fur? Thanks😊
yes! give it a try!
So your Samoyed dog is basically related to a sheep
Bascially!
Your patience is incredible.
Thanks fo much <3
This was incredible to watch! I'm going to attempt something similar - I really appreciate using what you have in your proximity and slow-form art! Thanks for being inspiring :)
Thanks so much for watching. Happy spinning!
Thanks for sharing. Fantastic. ❤
Thanks for watching!
Unfortunately I found out that this is not legal where I live
to collect shedding dog fur instead of throwing it out?
Could I use my spinning wheel?
Yes, of course! It would be much quicker too :)
Thank you. I’ve found small bags of fur from my 2 Maremmas who have since passed so I plan to spin an create something in their memories.
adorable woofer
thanks :)
This video had so much good information! I want to try this with my Persian cat’s fur. He has very thin, white fur though. I also have a huge wad of hair from my cat who passed a couple years ago and have not known what to do with the fur. I want to put it to good use and make something I can remember him by. I feel I can practice with my cats fur I’ve been collecting now, then try and do something with that matted wad I have. Thank you for the detailed video!!
You can also felt the fur into something like an ornament or little cat with some other fiber. I did that with Theo's fur and made a little face on the ball. Practice makes perfect! :)
You have no idea how much i needed this! I have like 4-6 lbs of fur i needed spun and the cost was way too high for me per kg. I can definitely handle this myself, I'm a do-it-yourself kinda girl. Thank you so much!
Glad I could help! You got it, girl! Check out the 2.0 video to make things go faster :)
I have a Samoyed & I have been bagging her wool. I plan to wash it & spin it & crotcheted it into something amazing! 🐾🐾✨️💝 The only dog I'm obsessed with is Samoyeds. They are a blessing in my life. Wonderful video. Thank you. God bless😊
It's so good to have! Samoyeds are SO perfect and cute. I'm a sucker for them too.
Also couldnt help but think every step looks like some level of crazy to an unknowing stranger... But when ya know ya know... This is basically magic.
That's RUclips! haha #magic
This really opened my eyes to the world of textiles 😮 we take fabric so for granted!!!
Thanks! Makes me feel more connected to what I make for sure!
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Okay I have a husky. This is perfect!
Thanks for watching!
Could I use it a pug dog’s hair
If it's long enough, yes! Try twisting some of the fur in your fingers and see if it can make a string that doesn't break. If it doesn't, then you're in business!
