Silent No More: Women in the Haitian Revolution
Просмотров 2303 месяца назад
Recorded May 15, 2024. In 1791, the eruption of the Haitian Revolution shook the world. It was the only revolt of enslaved people to abolish slavery and create a free and independent Black nation in the Americas. Enslaved women represented nearly half of colonial Haiti’s plantation populations and performed much of the same physical labor as their male counterparts. However, few women are ident...

Sean Sanger, a volunteer gardner at Old North Church, talks about the 18th Century Garden. This unique garden is made up exclusively of plants that Boston residents would have had in the 1700s. As Sean explains, many of the plants had culinary or medicial purposes. Historic Paint Restoration: Uncovering Hidden Angels
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.4 месяца назад
History is literally being uncovered in Old North Church’s sanctuary! Beginning in 1727, congregation member John Gibbs painted angels in the corners (or spandrels) of each arch and festoons of ribbon and flowers on the flat columns (or pilasters) between the arches. A paint study several years ago proved that these elements still exist under the contemporary paint. Over the next several months...

Two ornate brass chandeliers, gifts to the church by Capt. William Maxwell, hang in the center aisle of the sanctuary. The chandeliers also tell an interesting story about the history of Christmas celebrations in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Writing Revolutions: A Conversation with Historical Fiction Authors
Просмотров 586 месяцев назад
Recorded February 28, 2024. A great work of historical fiction transports audiences back in time in a uniquely human way. At its best, historical fiction makes the struggles of the past feel raw and emotional in the present, sheds light on those left out of the dominant historical narrative, and challenges us to consider multiple perspectives. How do writers of historical fiction accomplish thi...

Great work
Really fun listen. I love the history and all the different otigin stories. Side note: My favorite bit of lore was that the tunnels were built by crown loyalists for an easy escape if the colonists got hostile. Great to learn a bit more about Boston history. Great work.
In my past life in the late 1770s I visited that church looking for work for two days. I was a German Republic immigrant born in the 1750s, that later learned English and American laws and fought for the winning side in the Revolutionary war as James. I died in Shippensburg Pennsylvania after the war was over.
Having been involved with churches for 6 decades, I wouldn't be surprised if some pastor came in and advanced the idea that art was a form of vanity or idol worship or graven image. A lot of churches go through a "progression " or devolution that starts with a certain vibrancy and innocence, then falls under nefarious or controlling leaders who push outrage and reactionary ideas to gain more control over the people. Often, they'll make the most innocuous things - like paintings or bright decor or laughter, into a shameful thing, whip the people up to make "change", and then do the drastic change as if it symbolizes some kind of repentance or "turning over a new leaf ". In reality, it changes nothing, but doesn't give that leader much more power and control, as symbolized by the outward and visible changes to the church, the way the people dress, or certain behaviors.
Thank you for explaining and showing the restoration work. Glad it can be done!
Good man. Excellent job. And thank you.
“Queer Puritans”. These are grown adults running this channel? Good grief, do grow up.
Do we know the location of the Spooner farm today? Does the foundation still exist? Naturally, it would be somewhere within the vicinity of the well, but do we know its precise location?
Mr. Noone mentioned that Ross was a native of Topsfield. Forgive me if I am mistaken, but I thought he was from Ipswich, in the village of Linebrook? Was Ipswich then part of Topsfield, or vice versa?
The members probably thought the paintings were victorian and decided to paint it white to give it a colonial look.
This is really fascinating. A wonderful production. They probably thought the paintings were Victorian and painted over them with white paint to give the church a colonial look.
I can look down and see the church right outside my bedroom window. I'd go with the olive green on the cornice. Years ago, I worked in restoration for years as an apprentice under the late Italian master painter and restorer and furniture designer Aldo Pistidda. I'd love to skip over to the church and be on hand to help out in any way.
absolutely amazed and how few losses there seem to be after 300 years. especially in churches, considering how much candle smoke wafts up into rafters and deposits on ceiling murals, not even mentioning huge windows = UV damage. the brushstrokes on that one cherub survived in almost perfect condition it's wild
Landing here as a regular Baumgartner viewer had me armed with various restoration related info to appreciate the shop talk on isolation layer etc :)
Canadian artist here. It's not often the algorithm gives me a perfect channel. Thank you for posting this work.
So exciting! Thank you!!
Yes!
This is a MUST WATCH every holiday season! My only disagreement with the speaker's assertion that the history shows the Wampanoag didn't go willingly, is, that yes, they did. When they became Christians and lived out on the islands as the speaker avers at the beginning stages of this presentation. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video presentation!
I wish to thank you for sharing this video with me . Amen
I was at the Old North Church as a child of about 9 years old and our family was traveling throughout New England to see several historical places. Your church was one of those places. I was in awe of the boxed pews and I thought it was a way to protect each family from germs from other people. But I like the real reason.
A great conversation and as a student of the Haitian Revolution I was able to take notes and I am deeply appreciative of what you are doing! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this was my great great great grandfather … graduated Harvard..

We love Robert Darnton here in France. Thanks for posting this video. His latest book is now translated into french. It will be a great read as usual.
Wow! I always wondered why everything was just white. What a shame they painted over, but so cool you guys are uncovering these. Sooooo cool!!
Black people are indigenous. They always switch up the wording. We got paper genocided but hey that’s how you take the land.
Indigenous to what land? At what time? Did caucasion people fall from the sky? Are they aliens? Honest question because your statement written the way it's been written makes no sense.
I wish to thank Nikki for sharing this video with me . Amen
Do you happen to know if this Ebenezer Clough is related to the John Clough, first mayor of Salisbury MA?
I'm curious about the tools they use to light them!
1) Was there a separate entrance door for black people to enter (not via the front door), as present in many churches? If so, did children, apprentices, and white indentured people enter through the slave entrance (they were seated in the same location as black people), or did they enter via the front door, and then make their way to another stairway to sit in the gallery with the black people? 2) Were blacks still separate from children/white indentured people/apprentices even though they sat in the same gallery?
Wow! What a great storyteller. Very professional. You could present on "History Hit".
I wish to thank you for sharing this video with me . Amen
