Gem cutting Ep.6 - Spessartite Garnet
Beautiful work.
I really have to get a new machine. I am planning on getting a V-5 one day. It is dam near impossible to live on disability with prices being like they are today. One way or another I will get her. That emerald looks really good.
Cole do emeralds have like a oily skin on them? I have bought some that dont and some that do but I have found out the ones that dont have been dyed so I am not even messing with them. I am working on the ones that I have been getting from one seller and all of them have lie a oily film to them. It is like it is coming out of the rock. Nice job on this one. Your videos are fine just the way they are. Thanks man
Hey Jim. I answered your question on another video. Hope it helps ❤️
It looks really good. Hard to believe that is glass. Funny thing is that King Tuts death mask has the desert glass set in it. Cole does a emerald always seem like it has a oily skin on it? I mean not a lot but just a real super thin coat of oil on it even as you cut it? Thanks man and a really nice stone. To tell you the truth there is no problem with the content or length of your videos. I find them informative and knowledgeable. Your videos have taught me a lot of things about cutting. Thank you
Hey Jim! Glad you liked the video. Sounds like you are getting oiled emeralds. They submerge them in an oil to enhance the colour and remove the visibility of crack and inclusions. Typically you oil a finished emerald, but if you’re purchasing them and they are leaking oil while in the rough/during cutting, I would stop buying from that supplier.
really nice
Cole I asked you on another video of yours do emeralds have a oily film to them?
Wow! Great collection of technology! I had no idea how the Fantasy machine works-now i do. Thanks for sharing. Great comparison very useful information. I am just getting started with a Raytech from ebay. I will be back for more of your content i am sure.
Hi Cole, I have a question about emeralds, Do they always look like they have a slight oily skin? I am talking about a stone in the rough. I just got done cutting one and it had like a oily skin to it. Nice job on the stone.
Get rid of the oil in the lamp and use denatured alcohol in there instead to prevent the soot from contaminating your bond. Nice work btw
i need to get out of doubts, can you live comfortably faceted gemstones in the united states ? can you please be frank and what kind of stones are sold more often ?
The end results looks great. I do have some raw aquamarine how much do you charge for polishing ?
Hello. If you would like, please send me an email at cole.thynne@gmail.com with a photo of what you would like polished next to a coin for size reference, and I can assist from there.
Magnifica❤
Great job Cole! Greetings from Utah!
Price?
I'd like to buy some Moldavite but I'm fearful of buying fake material.
It looks great Cole. I think had you gone with what we consider to be a more appropriate (deeper) Pavilion, the stone would simply have been too dark and would not have shown off characteristics of the Moldavite. This was a good choice.
Lovely video, I enjoyed the longer format, as well as the blogging type format. This turned into such a stunning and unique piece! a bit of corrective info for you, I hope you dont mind! im autistic, and crystals (speaking broadly) are one of my special interests. in the intro, a better word would have been Tektite, which describes the type of natural glass formed from meteor impacts. moldavite is always green, and refers specifically to glass Tektites formed from a single, specific meteor impact. the location range covers multiple countries, but its most often found in czech republic and germany. the yellow one from egypt is often called Libyan glass. Similar to Moldavite, it refers to tektites from a specific meteor impact in that region. the different locations lead to different geology, and as such, different mineral compositions. so while they are all tektites, moldavite and libyan glass are distinct types, and there are multiple others which have specific names based on their location, as well. crystals are such amazing things, you do amazing work with them!
I concur with most of what you say with the exception of Tektite. Both are Impactites. They are formed the same way (via Impact) but are found at the impact site unlike Tektites which can be found a great distance from the impact site and often have a round or teardrop shape from being thrown from the impact area. Some tektites are thrown high into the atmosphere where they cool as they fall. Moldavites and Libyan Desert Glass are both Impactites and like all meteorite-related objects, they are named for the location in which they are found (ie. based on the closest postal code or town). Moldavite (Green) are found in the Czech Republic. Libyan Desert Glass (Yellowish) are from the Libyan Desert. Darwin Glass (Greyish) are found around Mt. Darwin, Tasmania. I have specimens of each of the above along with Many More Meteoric Specimens including Tektites, HED's from Vesta (asteroid), and many Meteorites including from Mars and the Moon.
@@SnowTiger45 thank you for the correction! I’m glad I wasn’t too far off, I feel bad that I wasn’t quite accurate in my comment; I’d never had it clarified that there are different terms based on how/where the material cooled post-impact! Most of what I learned about what I now understand are impactites was from a gem shop I worked at a briefly few years back. They’d tried to say moldivite now comes with certificates of authentication (only learned that was wrong last night when I was typing my original comment, and decided to double check) so I’m not shocked the rest of my info wasn’t quite accurate. Thank you for adding to/improving my knowledge!
What about the Fac-Ette Gem Master. I believe that it should at least be mentioned. The Fac-Ette and the Faetron come out of the same shop and the Ultra tec is known as fantastic by the community so I am not implying anything about quality of machines. I just feel it is a dis service not to mention the Gem Master.
I am discussing machines that I currently own and have used. I haven’t used a Fac-ette nor do I own one. I have heard great things about them but I am not going to voice my opinion without first hand experience.
How many ct?
9ct stone
Cool
Is that Emerald it just looks different than emerald I'm not positive I almost want to say it's but it's the wrong color I do believe. Or it's really Columbian because I can see the blue heel coming through I'm just not sure if it's your light or not messing with my eyes
Hey, it’s actually tourmaline. Your eye was correct 🙌
Come on bro a 3 minute video? You should go back to doing longer vids like when you started doing this. The gen came out great. Wouldve loved to see it come together more drawn out. Always love seeing the rough cut, then the facets being polished and becoming clear.
Thanks for the feedback! I enjoy the longer format as well, I will make sure to do some longer ones in the coming videos. 🙌
Nice!!
Good job Cole ! 👏
awesome
nice stone
I've always wished to feel deeply included
Beautiful stone I've got a lot of Montana sapphires actually buy a lot I mean like 15 or 16 I haven't cut that much
What did you do to work around the orange peel?
Just had to go back and re-cut past the depth of it and it worked itself out luckily.
GREAT WORK MATE
Шикарно! насмотрелся твоих видео купил себе до же станок) материала много очень а огранщика вообще не найти... решил сам все делать
Good job Cole !
Sweet video man, nice stones.
really nice gem, tho i must admit i do not understand why people chose to use synthetic gems, as a status symbol. what status do you gain from cheap easy reproduceable gem. i know this is the custommers chois, i personally chose a flawed "cheap" aqua for my gfs setting
What makes natural more valuable? The synthetic tends to be purer anyways. Don’t let jewelers brain washing you into thinking “natural” is better.
Natural stones cost a lot of money to source. They are a lot easier to create in a lab than spending money on mining claims, equipment, gas and labour of workers.
To put it in perspective, a sapphire of this colour, size and clarity would be a 5 figure gemstone if it were natural. This is simply a most cost effective way for everyone to enjoy jewellery.
MI 🇺🇸
Hey Cole what is the name of the machine you are using in this video please. Thank you
Hey Rhonda, that is the ultra tec fantasy machine.
@@colethynne Ok Thanks I am checking on the V5 Digital.
Nice video, I have swapped from regular super glue to Helios Light Cure super glue and since I have I have not had any stones release from the dobs (knock on wood). The glue lasts a long time in the bottle too. The flash light that you get does use up battery's.
Good idea, maybe I will try that out myself. Yes, that flashlight uses batteries
What UV glue are you using and does it last a while in the bottle?
Unfortunately the brand just says “UV glue”. I got it off of Amazon
you really know your stuff, sir. how long have you been doing this? love the results.
Thanks. Been at it two years now
What website was that where you were looking at different cuts?

Great job Cole!!! ! Greetings from Utah !
Thanks Fabian 🙏
Well Cuts brother. What's that about a carrot?
1.15ct!
Dang
How does one get into the world of cutting gemstones? Such an obscure profession.
Great question. I should make a video explaining. To put it short, I was a glass artist making chandeliers. I wanted to cut glass like gems for my lighting, and after purchasing a gem cutting machine and cutting glass marbles, I started cutting gemstones. Thanks for watching.
This guys a beauty
love the result. Cannot wait for the next part.
nice work
Inspirational!
Awesome process.
