Dune Part 2: Storytelling Analysis
All aboard the hype worm - Denis Villeneuve's plans are measured in centuries, but at long last here we have it, the second installment in his adaptation of the 1965 literary sci-fi epic. As it was written! Or rather, as it was symbolically alluded to.
An incredible cinematic experience but a story that rang oddly hollow given its intensity. Find out why right here, then like & subscribe or I'll lead you to paradise.

2024 Oscar Best Picture Nominees Ranked

Is ranking films an inherently click-baity, problematic way of interpreting art? That's for me to feel guilty about and you to ignore as I walk through the 96th Academy Awards best picture nominees, a delightfully diverse arrangement of - some of - 2023's best films. Behold the contenders (ALPHABETICALLY, not spoiling my own video): American Fiction Anatomy of a Fall Barbie The Holdovers Killer...

Forgive me, Hannah Waddingham, none of the above applies to you... "You know what the happiest animal on earth is? It’s a goldfish. You know why? It’s got a 10-second memory." Gilmore Girls: Rewatchable Storytelling

It's a show, it's a lifestyle, it's a religion...it's Gilmore Girls. Some parts of this show have aged like Kirk's easter eggs, and some parts were more like expensive marzipan - never palatable to begin with. And yet, once it starts getting dark early, once I start feeling a primordial need for Carole King and soup, it seems like the world agrees it's officially Gilmore Girls rewatch time. So ...

    I think that season 5 was not as well received as previous seasons was because most of people of a certain age remember the events as they happened. Not many people are still alive who saw Queen Elizabeth II accede to the throne, but many of us remember the wedding of Charles and Diana and the disaster that followed. We remember Diana's Panorama interview and we saw how she tried to destroy Charles. To me, this was the most fascinating season of all.

    I always thought GG was devoid of real conflict. It's all very glazed and surface level. I started liking it more once Rory became more problematic. She was more realistic.

  • @lyndsycarson8302
    @lyndsycarson8302 5 дней назад

    I thought the show was more of a warning like their charector growth was learning that the people around them are affected by their selfish choices. That Rory wasn’t their for her best friend when she got pregnant, she just left her behind. Lorelai never thought about how her leaving with her baby affected her parents. That Rory learned that there isn’t always safety in money and her mom was right, that Lorelai learned parenting isn’t easy when the child isn’t perfect anymore and that life isn’t easy on your own. And yeah they aren’t great friends and people are meant to be independent. Raising a child is supposed to be a partnership and growing up should entail learning that not everything is about you. I’ve watched Gilmore Girls 3-4 times all the way through and started it many other times. It’s a good show but definetly flawed since most people think Suki and Lyn are losers for becoming moms, but (marital assualt aside) they have safety and partnership and fulfilling lives. It’s more realistic than Lyn being a rockstar. Maybe doing online school and getting a degree in music theory and teaching at the highschool or something but For many people watching teen pregnancy is a real thing and the duffes guy usually grows up to be a pretty committed hard working man and a good dad.

    I will say I moved to a small town for the better education for my son I do work in that small town I used to commute 30 minutes to it and when this town has two big factories in it one is an appliance factory and the other one is a paper factory when these factories come out of work every single gas station is crowded the grocery store is crowded most people commute from another county into this town but when the factories get out of work there are more people that I work in these two factories then live in the small town it is like that in a small town it is really not in common to be standing in a line waiting to get a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread have six people behind you and somebody is showing the cashier their grandkids pictures when I watch the show as a teenager my mother hated this show so i would get the liveroom to myself another thing that I learned after re-watching the show as an adult that I must have missed as a child Laura got to trust fund when she was 25 that's how she was able to afford the house because there was no way that a woman making about maybe 30 40,000 in the 2000s as a single woman with a child could afford a house like that

    What a wonderful retrospective, so beautifully analysed. The one thing I guess we disagree on though is the revival X'D For me, the fact that it chose to forego the traditional whimsy in the face of a real world-changing tragedy made sense. I watched the show as a high-achieving Rory-coded teenager (minus the privilege) but by the time the revival came around, I was the older Rory, flailing and struggling, dealing with death and grief, with my previous sense of whimsy depleted, and I related to it so much. I grew up with the show and, with the revival, the show grew up with me.

    6:36 "remove the consent"???? daenerys was 13 and sold as a child bride. every time after their wedding night that they had sex (translation: he raped her) it hurt her so bad that she became suicidal. when she comes to love him it's a stockholm syndrome situation more than anything. i like the rest of your video but this part rubbed me the wrong way. you can say that GRRM doesn't see it that way or that 13 is a normal age to get married at in their world, it doesn't change the fact that daenerys was a CHILD and it's still STATUTORY RAPE and it's just fucking creepy and disgusting in a way that consent won't help

    loved the video. and i must say, i TRULY forgot about the prince’s death! it was so glossed over, okay Rheynera yelled at Daemon and he went to harrenhall to cry about it. big whoop. that was the HEIR. REGICIDE. at some point, everyone can’t be “trying to avoid unnecessary conflict” when it comes to the death of the innocent heir child. especially because they ‘cheapened’ the scene with blood/cheese sneaking about the castle and as you said, there was no intrigue. we found out immediately that they found the twins & haelena picked a child. it would’ve been so much more interesting if the episode ended with the men asking for the boy and the next episode we see Rheynera screaming at Daemon for his ill thought plot. okay, rant over. Nonetheless, lovely video with beautiful comparisons and insights.

    I first watched Gilmore Girls with my mom, who is remarkably like Emily. I was a young mom, so when my daughter got older, we started watching it together. It became our show because it was so relatable on so many levels. The thing that always makes me laugh is that they always say that they tell each other everything, but they actually never tell each other anything.

    With the knowledge that the writers had to flesh things out in this case, in order to add depth, it becomes less surprising. There have been reports that Hollywood is cutting development times, shrinking writers rooms, not extending contracts to cut corners...so you get different writers between seasons and less care overall. I wish Hollywood would just figure out that cheap AI written entertainment is not the future. Human led, human made shows with the right resources is the future.

    While there are so many valid critiques of this show, I've never understood the "working class" one. The whole point is that Lorelai succeeded without her parents - AKA, she is not in the working class. To me, Rory and Lorelai embody the middle class of the 90s (back when that meant accessible home ownership, something that is understandably hard to imagine now). Lorelai earns a middle class salary and owns a pretty, but not huge, house in a small town in rural Connecticut -- which she purchased in the 1990s. She can absolutely afford that house. The one part that is unrealistic is the constant eating out, but even then, they're never eating in fancy places. I think these recent criticisms really demonstrate how bad the housing crisis has become -- that we can't even fathom that this was a middle class lifestyle.

    The choice to give dragons to unknown people, to small folk is a huge thing. I agree that it could have happened sooner, but I like that it feels so big, because it is. It questions Targaryen exceptionalism, it questions the order of things in terms of the general make up of the society. Small folk now wield more power than ever before. I agree though that this was simply not enough of a payoff in the grand scheme of the overall arch of the season.
