    I'd like to how they would have fought with jian back in the day. I can tell everyone here has european backgrounds. But I'm wondering how different/similar the fighting styles would be.

    • @DarkwarriorJ
      @DarkwarriorJ 10 дней назад

      China is massive in both time and space, so I can't say that 'this is how they would have done it', but if you look at the Wudang Sword manual (Brennan translations), which represents one late Qing to early Republican era lineage: 0. It's a "dirty arm/handsniper's" manual; and indeed arm-sniping is basically the entire school. To clarify from a later comment, I don't mean this in a bad way. Every single movement is explained in terms of wrist sniping first; anything else is a happy accident. Compared with the Tai Chi Jian manual, which also emphasizes that arm-sniping is how it was done in ancient times, it's likely that all historical one-handed jian swordsmanship loved extended arm positions and sniping the opponent's arm. 1. Postures tend to be upright, but work the legs hard. Other manuals commonly have admonishments against using the jian like a dao (endless complaining about all the 'sword flower' moulinets in particular), which plays a lot more like saber-dussack-messer and encompasses the full spectrum of fencing like similar European sources. That these admonishments are so common, and that the dao is commonly trained before the jian, and that some jians had disk guards during the Ming-Qing transition (during a time of brutal war), rather indicates to me that whilst circular movements and arm snipes are what's 'special' about jian schools, it's mostly how they tried to distinguish themselves from the Chinese dao, which was more the default styles and what you'd expect to face even if they were using the jian.

    • @ScottGrow117
      @ScottGrow117 9 дней назад

      @DarkwarriorJ was dao more of a war weapon and jian more civilian? Or was it a class thing?

    • @DarkwarriorJ
      @DarkwarriorJ 9 дней назад

      @@ScottGrow117 Depends on the time period, but in general over the last 1500 years - yes. Jian were last used as standard-issue military weapons during the Han dynasty (time in the west: late Roman Republic to Roman empire), during which their form was very different from later period jian. They had a small resurgence during the late Ming (Western time: mid-Renaissance), and again during the late Qing (Victorian era), as weapons of war - though not in a standard issue manner (we have village militia jian with disk guards from both the Taiping rebellion era, and from the late Ming, for example). Military officers and scholars during the Ming did tend to carry jian, but the Qing officers tended to simply carry dao. Both are broad classes of weapons with many variations; it's just whether it's double edged or single-edged really. Our best surviving sources and almost all Kung Fu lineages tend to be from the late Ming onwards - and more usually late Qing onwards.

      @@DarkwarriorJ Summarizing the Wudang teachings so old it has literally become poetry as "dirty/handsniping" is a reductive view hinting of insecurity. The former a War Art wher the most sensble thing to do is to disarm the opponent, the latter a Sport where he objective is scoring Points. The people who bemoan "handsniping" are those whose skills do not know how to defend against it. May as well replace the Jian with a hammer and say carpentry is ineffective.

      @@regibron Dirty handsniping is meant to throw shade more at HEMA tbh, but admittedly I didn't make that clear. I will edit the comment accordingly. We're the ones often holding that sort of attitude. I never said it was ineffective - quite the opposite; I'm interested in the manual in part because it fills a gap in my own learning and attitude. @weaponisedtwintailscosplay 10 дней назад

      The jian prioritises thrusts and fast agile movements in small spaces. A larger crossguard would make that way more difficult than it needs to be. The guard is primarily there to prevent the hand from slipping onto the blade. Defense wise, its not made for hard blocks, dynamic blocking is more its style.

    • @lolasdm6959
      @lolasdm6959 10 дней назад

      @@weaponisedtwintailscosplay No, if you look at Jian forms, its clear the sword originally was used with at least a buckler to defend the hand. Just later on shields went out of use but the Jian remained a side arm.

      @@lolasdm6959 I've never seen a Jian form in use with buckler though since it is a single handed weapon I suppose in it's 2,000 year use someone paired it with a shield As @weaponisedtwintailscosplay says: the Jian style is more dynamic redirection. • @lolasdm6959
      @lolasdm6959 9 дней назад

      @@regibron Nope, if you look at the stances. It always involves the offhand as well as the swordhand. The thrust stance has the offhand raised above the head while the legs bend forward to increase range. That is literally how a sword and buckler is used. The Jian guard stance has the offhand positioned near the jian, as you would do to protect your hand with a buckler. It isn't that in 2000 years use and someone paired it with a sword, historically Chinese armies were armed with the jian and shield. Later on the Jian fell out of use in the military, replaced by the saber and became a symbol of status instead, noblemen aren't going for a stroll with a shield. Since dueling isn't allowed in China, no one ever thought to improve the handguard.
