Winter Backpacking on the Manistee River - Jan. 2025
Mid-January 2025, I ventured to northern Michigan to meet up with some new friends and backpack in snowy and below freezing temperatures, following the Manistee River... I started at Seaton Creek Campground and hiked 4 miles where I met up with them and set up camp for the night. We enjoyed a toasty fire and lots of laughs! Day2 started in the mid-20s and we hiked just under 6 miles south on the trail. We set up camp and enjoyed beautiful views while processing firewood for a campfire that lasted through the evening. Once again, we enjoyed laughs and shared backpacking experiences from over the years. After a chilly, but cozy night, we hiked about 2.5 miles to Red Bridge River Access to c...

Rainy Backpacking and Dispersed Camping by a Beautiful River
Просмотров 516День назад
At the end of December, I took a quick and close to home over night adventure in Southern Michigan, backpacked a short section of the North Country Trail and camped along a small river. I had been by the campsite many times, but never stopped to enjoy it. While it rained nearly the entire time I was at camp, I enjoyed the quiet and relaxing time before the rain stopped and I was finally able to...
FAILED! Backpacking the Steve Newman Worldwalker Perimeter Trail - East Fork State Park, Bethel, OH

My brother-in-law, Josh, and I ventured to southern Ohio to conquer the Steve Newman Worldwalker Perimeter Trail in East Fork State Park in Bethel, Ohio. It's a 33-ish mile trail that we were excited to traverse, despite trail reports indicating it can be challenging due to horse use as well as a couple of potential water crossings that can be dangerous. We hiked about 4.5 miles on Day 1 to the...
Camping and Hiking with "The Boys" in Potato Creek State Park - November, 2024

A few days before Thanksgiving, "the boys" and I met up at Potato Creek State Park in Indiana to spend a couple days in the outdoors. We rented a cabin and it turns out it was a "real" cabin, so we definitely enjoyed all the comforts of home. Poppy, Dan, Josdh, Nathan and I hiked a couple of trails and enjoyed a nice dinner and breakfast as well as lots of Poppy's stories! After they left, I hi...
Camping on the Maumee River in Ohio

I ventured to Northwest Ohio to camp on the Maumee River in Farnsworth Metropark in Waterville, Ohio. Upon arriving, I took about a 7 mile bike ride that followed the Maumee River to see some views and experience the different parks. Upon returning to my campsite, I had a strange encounter which ultimately altered my plans a bit. As such, I ended up at a familiar place, Mary Jane Thurston State...
Backpacking Rocky Ridge & Sunset Rocks on the Appalachian Trail | Michaux State Forest, Oct. 2024

After spending the week in Pennsylvania for a work trip, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a couple of days backpacking a couple sections of the Appalachian Trail. On the first day, I hiked a few miles, through “Rocky Ridge” in Michaux State Forest. I spent the night dispersed camping, enjoying a nice meal and fire. Day 2, I retraced my steps back to the car, and drove about 20 minutes...

Camping at Black Creek State Campground - Sanford, MI Sept. 2024

I decided last minute to head out of the city to get a nice break after a tough week... I headed to Black Creek State Campground near Sanford, MI and set up at campsite 21. There was no hiking, just car camping, relaxing with a nice campfire and plenty of food. While it's a bit differerent than some of my other getaways, it was nice to enjoy the quiet and beautiful nature that Michigan has to o...
Day 3: Backpacking the Knobstone Trail

Day 3 on the Knobstone Trail had me hike about 18 or so miles from my camp past Elk Creek, Oxley Memorial Trailhead, Spurgeon Hollow and ultimately ending at Delaney Creek Trailhead where I began my adventure. It was another challenging day with plenty of hills, lots of bugs, but I did see a turtle on the trail and a very long snake (not a fan!). I thoroughly enjoyed the trek, despite how diffi...

Day 2 on the Knobstone Trail... After a brief bite to eat, I hit the trail around 7:30 a.m. and hiked about 18 miles, about 3 miles east of Elk Creek. Day 2 was tough. The heat was scorching, the bugs were aggressive, the spiderwebs didn't quit and water was limited. After as stick to the eye, a cracked and bloody head, and some concern of heat stress, I made it to camp for the night where I en...
Day 1: Backpacking the Knobstone Trail

At the end of August 2024, I headed out to southern Indiana to hike "Indiana's Most Difficult Trail." The Knobstone Trail, also known as "The Little Appalachian Trail" covers 48 miles, starting at the southern terminus, Deam Lake, arriving at the northern terminus at Delaney Creek Park. It has significant elevation gain, over 9000 feet, and for some reason, Indiana does not utilize switchbacks,...

My backpacking buddy, Skidmark, along with first-timer Tom (now affectionately known as “Pokey”) ventured across the border to Canada for a weekend trip. Solo Backpacking the High Country Pathway - Day 4

On Day 4 of my trip, I hiked from the Clear Lake State Park to Pigeon Bridge State Forest Campground, covering 27 miles. I had a very nice rest, but the modern campgrounds tend to be a bit more boisterous through the night. Regardless, I woke rested and prepared to hike a long day in an attempt to complete the 80 mile trail. The ferns again were driving me to madness, and I had one minor river ...

On Day 3 of my trip, I hiked from the Canada Creek Shelter to Clear Lake State Park, covering about 20 miles. I had a very nice rest, but a mouse did wake me up around 1:00 a.m. in the shelter. This was an enjoyable but grueling hike, but I was rewarded with my first elk sighting, multiple deer sightings, as well as the first snake on the trip. The ferns continued to frustrate me, but the undis...

Such a good trip. Really enjoyed reliving it a bit. Looking forwards to the next one!
Thank you for a great trip, for scoping Seaton and bailing me out! Looking forward to our next one!
That looked like a great trip. The MRT is awesome.
@@JoshEbersole Thanks for watching, Josh! MRT never disappoints… even better with good company! Happy trails!
Thanks, Mark. Thanks for sharing. I needed this, it’s been a long day. lol.
@@tangenttrails As always, thanks for watching! I understand long days… hope you’re doing well, my friend.
@ Doing well. Going to get a trip in next week.✌️
@ Atta boy!! Looking forward to enjoying the adventure! Have a great trip!
@ Thanks!
What a beautiful hike and man are you guys hard core. My winter camping looks weak in comparison haha. I also subbed to your friends channels and look forward to checking them out!
@@Everydaybackpacker Thanks for watching, Ghost Mule! They’re good dudes, and I’m sure appreciate the subs! Winter camping is something else, can’t image doing it in your neck of the woods! Actually, I can!! lol!
Had a blast on this trip, hope we can get together again soon for another!
@@mattbundt9986 Dude… you and me both! Thanks for a great time!
How did the sleeping bag inside the quilt do for warmth?
Thanks for watching! So, I wish I knew the equation, but I was VERY warm. Warmer than the previous night (20 degrees with the 10 degrees quilt only). If we’d had to go below zero, I’m confident I would have been fine. The worst part is getting out in the morning! 🤦♂️🤣
Great video. The MRT was my first backpacking trip. I have done the loop 10 times. Only live a hour and half away. Usually do it all in one day. All those little creeks are good for Brook trout fishing. Once again great video. I need to invest in some cold weather gear.
Thanks for watching, NTO… it’s such a great place (wish I was closer) and you’re right, the fishermen seem to love this river. Winter backpacking is such a great experience! “Never Too Cold”?? That has a ring to it! Lol
Did it 3 weeks ago. Had the whole trail to myself. Very peaceful.
Thanks for watching! This time of year is perfect for that solitude… like you said, super peaceful! Thanks, again!
The river is so Awesome anytime of the year!! J & C
Thanks for watching! This place never gets old!!
@@tridudyonthetrail Totally agree!!
Looks awesome! Just a few minutes in and I’m having the best of flashbacks 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Trust me, I thought about our time out there with fond memories! Still waiting on dates from you to plan our winter trip!! 😉😉
Please take wearing your life jacket more seriously. Make sure it's secure while you are wearing it. I'm pretty sure you don't have a fantasy about drowning one day. Tyfs. Beautiful.
That is where i fish, the fist nights camp area, for the last 40 years.
Thanks for watching, Kevin! That spot is absolutely perfect! I look forward to returning to it... such a gem!! Happy trails!
Beautiful 😊
Every once in a while I get a decent time lapse! lol!
Well done 😊
Thanks! This one was "exciting!" lol!
Great video, ty for these 😊
Thank you! And thanks for watching!!
Great video!
Thank you!! And thank you for watching! Happy trails!
Nice trip! I wish we had a trail here like the NCT. We have the Lone Star Trail to stretch our legs on, but lake of water can de an issue at certain times. Cheers!✌️
Thanks for watching, Hashtag! Definitely a gem that’s close to home! Not usually a lack of water in these parts lol! Looking forward to seeing more of your trips this year!
A history with rain indeed. Very nice site to spend the night in spite of the the soggy ground.
Thanks for watching, Skid! Would've loved to have you out there with me! Especially since you're the lucky charm when it comes to weather!
@tridudyonthetrail It would of done me good. Too early into winter to be getting cabin fever.
@ We’ll get out there before spring. It’ll be good for both of us! 😉
Great spot by the water Mark. Love that tent too. Glad you got to make a fire. Awesome
Thanks for watching, THG! That tent is definitely not as cool as the one in your last video! A little lighter though! lol! A fire makes everything better in that kind of weather, for sure! Looking forward to your adventures this year! (BTW, I may get a DJI Neo after seeing you use yours!). Happy trails!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Mark! I wondered if you ever ran into old Sam Bananas...I get stuck in various RUclips loops; Boonedockery, Kent Survival, etc and recently was pleasantly trapped in a number of Camping with Sam B. I have question regarding navigation. In the past I had a stand-alone gps but was wondering if an iphone paired with a garmin watch is sufficient if you use, say AllTrails or the like to pre-down load maps... My concern is battery life on the watch and the phone...will they get you through a weekend? I recently picked up a nitecore 20000 which seems to be pretty robust so far as charging multiple things multiple times...trying to have enough energy with me to run cameras, phone, watch, drone etc. Just seeking your insight. Thanks.
Hey Bill! Thanks for watching! For navigation, while I nearly always take a paper map, but an app on the phone is usually sufficient (something like OnX, Gaia, etc.). I like AllTrails, but since it's user generated content, I've found that I have to be a bit cautious of it. I always wear my watch and in GPS mode it has a battery life of up to 57 hours (so no problem for a weekend). As far as battery life, I bring an absurdly large battery bank, way overkill. It's 30,000 mah and I've never had any issues with dead batteries on a variety of devices. For a weekend, a 10,000 mah would probably be plenty depending on what all you were up to, so the Nitecore you've got should be plenty (and they're good too!). Hope that helps, and look forward to catching up with ya soon!
@@tridudyonthetrail thanks for the insight! Yes I'm hoping soon to start putting events on the calendar for this spring/summer/fall!
Very nice out there!! Beauty camp spot!! J & C

ohhh you’re not far from a 1000 subs!! …. gotta be this year right?!?! 👍👍 weather doesn’t look too bad … when was this filmed? great location for your camp thanks for sharing … atb Dave Mc
Hey Dave! Thanks for watching! Hard to believe there's so many folks that enjoy (or just subscribe 🤣) the videos! So, this was filmed Dec. 27th-28th (if memory serves) and was surprisingly warm... however, would have definitely preferred the snow! Hopefully that will happen in the next couple of weeks! Thanks again and am looking forward to more Colorado adventures!
What a great idea to connect the air compressor thing to the pocket bellow!
Thanks for watching! My wife gave me the idea a year or two ago and it works surprisingly well! lol!
At what point did you think you would be able to cross that river? Good plan to go away from the plan.
@@OhioRailTrailRoutesRoads Yeah, so, never was certain we’d cross, but wanted to give it the old college try. Turning around was the smartest thing we did. We should go backpacking… Hart too. Would be fun!
Thanks for bringing us along on another great hike! Makes me anxious to go backpacking again. That breakfast looked delicious! As did the meals prepared at camp! Hope all is well, Mark!
Thanks for watching, Glenn! Congrats on the baby! Very happy for you and your family!!

Nice save by Josh. Hope we can make the Porkies trip happen. Take care.
@@markstevens406 thanks for watching! I absolutely hope we can make that happen!

Great video.. I'm going to check this place out in spring..
Thanks for watching, Tweezy! I'd like to go back one day (especially when it's a bit less soggy!). Let me know how it goes when you do it! Happy trails!
Car camping, wheel barrows, modern cabins oh my!

Mark, I have so many questions about the dudes that didn’t have anything reserved 🤔 That shelter did look pretty sweet though! Going to have to get down there and check out that bike trail
I'll tell you all about on the trip! lol! And yes, I think you would dig it there!
Interesting adventure. Bicycle, wheelbarrow, car camping. not sure what to make of it. 🤔
Thanks for watching, Mark… definitely a bit of a change, but enjoyable on the river. Looking forward to our next adventure!
We have the same tent! What was the deal those guys offered
I noticed that we gave the same tent too!! Great minds! 😉 So, the deal, without going into too much detail, was they covered my cost and then some. In retrospect, I wouldn’t have done it… if they had done major damage or something, I would’ve been on the hook since I had reserved the site. I wanted to be kind but also need to be wise. Definitely look forward to going back. Thanks for watching, Weatherman!
