      Hi!! And Welcome!! Thank you so much! I love my metal beds. Here’s a link to where I purchased them. The benefit to these particular beds is you can take the pieces and build them into any shape or size that you need to fit your garden space. I made two different sizes. I made some 8 x 10 and two of them 4 x7’s. And they have different heights I chose the highest height so I wouldn’t put strain on my back bending over. I hope this helps. Basil did nothing for mine. I pruned the bottom leaves off all my tomatoes and planted lots of basil all underneath to use my small space efficiently and I've plucked several horn worms off the in last 2 days. Also destroying my pepper plants which isn't fun

    • @Mustardseedhomesteading
      @Mustardseedhomesteading 4 дня назад

      I know what you mean! I think the basil could be a hit or miss which is why the best thing to do is just check your garden every day for a few minutes. But I am experimenting right now where I’m allowing one of my basil plants to flower and grow really tall along the tomato plant and so far that particular tomato plant has had no hornworms. So I will see how that goes if it works I will start to do that instead. Maybe make an experiment of your own and allow one of your basil plants to grow really tall and don’t harvest it and then compare it to the ones that didn’t. And that’s good that you kept the tomatoes pruned on the bottom. Let me know how it goes! 😁

    • @Mustardseedhomesteading
      @Mustardseedhomesteading 5 дней назад

      @@Mardon551 I know I’ve never seen one before until I started gardening. They were a little intimidating at first, but they’re very harmless and that’s good that you have basil planted by your peppers and tomatoes, but even with that… the best line of defense is just to daily walk your garden even for just a few minutes to keep a watch out for them and just take them off. You could also use a blacklight at night because they are hard to find during the day unless you look for poops or bitten leaves. 😊

    This animal is actually a tobacco hornworm not a tomato hornworm. Those are equally destructive but there are also several species that look similar that are not as destructive that you want to just move instead of killing them. Clearwing hummingbird moth caterpillars, white lined sphinx moth caterpillars, snowberry clearwing moth caterpillars. They’re all great pollinators. True tomato hornworms will have 8 chevron stripes (think tomato juice V8) and tobacco hornworms will have 7 slashes (like lucky 7 cigarettes). Most of the other species will lack these stripes and have different horns and spots/dot patterns.

      @@jessicaschroeder5961 If you see a hornworm with little egg-like blobs on their backs, those are the cocoons of a parasitic wasp that is a natural predator of the hornworm. An adult wasp laid eggs under the hornworm's skin, the eggs hatched and the babies ate the hornworm from the inside, so it is doomed and will not live. The wasp larva then spin their cocoons on the outside of the hornworm. When they come out of their cocoons they'll be an adult wasp that is small and feeds on flower nectar. They will prey on other hornworms, laying their eggs under the skin, and the cycle will repeat. Plant flowers like yarrow (with many tiny flowers) to feed those wasps and they'll keep your hornworms under control. But as I wrote elsewhere, the moth that a hornworm grows into is very nice, like an insect hummingbird.

      @@Mustardseedhomesteading My chickens love grasshoppers, crickets, and other bugs that apparently taste good. But they won't touch bugs that are strong smelling like stink bugs (western pine beetle) or box elder bugs. I suspect that hornworms may taste bad to the hens since they eat poisonous nightshade plants (tomato and potato foliage is poisonous, though some animals or pests will eat it). My chickens won't eat Colorado potato beetles either. Or maybe they just find the size of the hornworms daunting. Usually I just transport the hornworms far from my garden and hope they'll find something else to eat that's in the nightshade family. Buffalo bur, other nightshade weeds.

      @Mustardseedhomesteading 8 дней назад

      Hi and Welcome!! Surprisingly, I have not had any deer issues or groundhog issues so far, and I do have houses on each side of me and in front of me and behind those woods further out are a street of houses so that might help a little. I do know deer do go through that back area thankfully they have not come near my garden. BUT I have had squirrel issues, especially in the winter and springtime they ate a lot of my broccoli. And unfortunately there’s not much to do about squirrels that I know of. The only thing I did purchase to help with the squirrels were fake owls I think that kind of helped but I can’t say for sure because some of my broccoli was eaten. Now if I did start to get deer issues, I would definitely put a fence around my garden and if I had a groundhog issue I’d have to probably put some sort of a metal grid under each of those beds. Which I hope I don’t ever have to do. 😅 I hope this helps!! 😃
