Drone Crop Scouting With Taranis-The Finale!
Today we close out our series of leaf-level insights and data-driven decisions with Taranis Drone Scouting. It has been a heck of a summer...and not in a good way. Mother Nature pulled out all the stops and there were no shortages of challenges during this growing season. For our last video, we're going to spend a little time in both fields looking over the last scouting flight (done 7/31), review the four categories of findings (Weeds, Diseases, Insects, and Nutrients), and after all that...we're going to be debuting an all new feature from Taranis! What is that new feature? I guess you'll have to watch and find out!
In as tough a year as this one, Taranis has provided me with the data I ...

A Big Baler Decision
Просмотров 367День назад
Some of you may have seen the last video I made about our Vermeer 605 Super M breaking right when we were starting to bale our 2nd cutting of alfalfa. It was a pretty bad break down which left us needing a loaner baler as soon as possible. Our great Vermeer dealer had a used, but refreshed 605 N that he let us use, and even offered us a pretty good deal on it. On the last video about this, I as...

As 21st century farming grinds on, we seem to plant some of the most boring crops. Corn, Milo, Beans, Wheat....rinse and repeat until the end of time. I'm bored just thinking about it. But Cover Crops? They're anything but boring. In fact, cover crops are my favorite thing to plant and watch grow. Especially Multi-Species Cover Crops. With our high diversity blends, there is not a single square...
How We Pick Our Multi-Species Cover Crops!
Просмотров 509Месяц назад
Today we are talking about how we pick out our multi-species cover crop here on JTAC Farms! I have had qute a few requests to walk y'all through our process. First, start out with the "why" or purpose of the cover crop. What is it meant to do? Many times when you answer the "why", it helps you narrow down the the species you want to choose from. Our cover crop is wearing many hats. It's providi...

    All in all, nicely done. You reminded me a lot of Dale Strickler, formerly from Green Cover Seed. After you mention the good, the bad, and I'll add the ugly. So now, I'm off to listen to the music score by the Italian composer Ennio Morricone played by the Dutch symphony that was so popular when I was just a youngster.

    For wildlife habitat/food plot needs, either one will work well, but my observations suggest that deer *with a choice* will eat awnless seed heads before they'll eat seed heads with an awn. I'm not saying they won't eat winter rye seed heads, because they will if they're hungry enough, but I'm confident in saying they'll eat awnless wheat and triticale heads with regularity.

    I don’t even know if I could count the species that come up. We’ve had many college field trips on the farm. They tend to scramble when they get over 130-140, a hunk of those are Forbes admitingly. We get a lot of precipitation , over 40”, and I learned how to do drip, and welded up a plow to get it in place. But as a zero chem, zero till, cover crop producer, I face a significant number of acres that fail. Those get shifted over to “rest and forage. It’s a big happy circus.

  • @leelindsay5618
    @leelindsay5618 24 дня назад

    Next, show the temps of the soil -bare vs at the base of the plants. Follow that with the fact that the roots will allow you to drive over top to plant into it while the ground is muddy underneath. Add to that some strip grazing with the cattle so you can see where they have been and you will get some good manure distribution that will feed your next crop.

    Are you able to harvest your own triticale and grow it the second year? Or is it a first year cross of rye+wheat where next year you need to buy triticale seed? I like that I can get heirloom Rye and grow it year after year.

    • @davidkottman3440
      @davidkottman3440 3 месяца назад

      Triticale is a closed cross that does not naturally hybridize in the field with rye or wheat, nor will it segregate back out into anything else in future generations. Replanting the seed will grow the same type again.

    I get a lot of questions. Heck, sometimes I get laughed at and ridiculed. The number 1 objection I hear is “green bridging.” Some of the biggest thought leaders in ag, with PhD’s and all, have promoted bare soil fallow as a way to terminate disease carry over. I do my best to explain the benefits of letting the enemy of my enemy move in and create balance. I would even go to say, limited signs of pressure that doesn’t get out of control is almost equal to a perfect crop. It’s a sign of balance. Of course as far as pestilence goes, a great crop with high brix is kryptonite to plant eating worms. Then there is the subject of diversity, more crop varieties being raised, to prevent strong populations of pathogens particular to one crop. But I will say this, I had nothing to lose. I had two thriving off farm careers, my initial purchase of 1215 acres of ground had absolutely zero chance of producing a commercial crop. I managed to get 550 acres of it going my 1st 2 years, and rented the 1200 acres next to me pretty cheap. He loved what I was doing so much, he seller financed me buying him out. Most farms just can’t afford the risk, and it is risky if you are not obsessed with the concept. That is where I see Gabe Brown and Allen Williams as important. Hold their hands, and walk them slowly in to better practices.

Well, 5 days later after two days of refusing to give in he had a nice little utility trailer for next to free. I'm not sure what the moral is here, but Christmas at my house was awesome mostly because i got something cool that used to be something else.
