An IMG's Road to Residency | Ep 02: What I wish I knew before going to Med School (in the PH)
Alternate title: What I wish I knew before becoming an International Medical Graduate
This is the continuation of my college tips video from my other channel (that should really be on this channel instead, but lack of foresight, what can you do). That video will be linked at the end of this one if you're curious (see the end screen).
And, tl;dw this is essentially the script I followed:
1. Where do you want to practice - for me, I wanted to practice in the US, but I also wanted to make sure that in the future, when I’m able to retire and return to the Philippines as an Ex-pat, I want to be able to practice medicine there (even as a general practitioner with a small rural clinic somewhere nea...

An IMG's Road to Residency | Ep 01: Unemployment Diaries
Просмотров 23614 дней назад
I feel like I'm throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks. I've been in a loop this past month, applying for jobs, working on my youtube channel, going on walks, going to the gym, rinse and repeat. And it feels like I'm going nowhere. This is for everyone who's on the same boat: unemployed, job searching, and frustrated. IMG or not, I'm sure everyone can relate to the struggle. But ...

Re-uploaded for higher video quality. This video is long and poorly edited, highly recommend to watch it in 1.5x or 2x speed because I really should have edited out all the pauses. But I'm new to this, so please bare with me. This sit-down vlog is not yet my more in-depth discussion of how I studied for the USMLE Step 2 CK. I don't know my results yet, but I'm hopefully going to find out within...

I’ve been in my unemployed era for a while now. But I’m about 1 month into the job hunting season, sent about 5 or 6 job applications for research positions, and I’ve gotten at least 2 job interviews, one with a connection I had from undergrad and another with a listing I found online. I’m not sure if I’ll get hired. I got rejected already from another job I applied to before, they didn’t even interview me. So if I get rejected after this interview, it will be the first of many, I’m assuming. But it is what it is, and we keep moving forward. Here are the lessons I learned from interviewing for an assistant research coordinator as an international medical graduate: 1. They already know how impressive your resume is, especially if you’ve written it that way, no need to reiterate what’s already spoken for in your CV/Resume unless they specifically bring it up and ask you about it 2. These jobs are typically looking for people who can dedicate at least 2 years of their time to be considered, do some introspection and see if this is something you want to put your time and effort into 3. Be honest with them, and they’ll be straight up with you too 4. Don’t be afraid, the worst that could happen is that they reject you, and if they do, maybe this job isn’t the right fit for you right now anyway 5. Good things take time #internationalmedicalgraduate #unemploymentdiaries #unemployed #jobhunting

Hi, I mentioned this in the video too. I know it's long so it's understandable that people wouldn't have caught it. But I mentioned that I don't want to do a step 2 score reveal for privacy reasons, and because I'm super disappointed in myself for missing my target score range of 255-265. I hope you understand. Thanks for watching!

Algo recommended me this video - US M1 here. Thank you for making this video! I know you said that you probably wouldn’t have made this video if you weren’t feeling this way but I’m grateful you did. My dad was also an IMG, so major respect for all the extra steps you had to go through. My perspective is probably worth a grain of salt, but to add on to what another commenter said, you have made it so far! It’s hard to look back and appreciate our accomplishments at times, but on your behalf I want to recognize your success. Impostors syndrome is very real but from what I’ve observed from the doctors I’ve been around it definitely fades over time. I’m only halfway though the video rn and typing this as I’m listening so going stream of consciousness mode. I also empathize with “making friends as an adult is difficult” - I know a lot of people with lifelong friends but that’s just never really been me. I hope you are able to meet people in residency! Also want to speak to one of your last points “never seeing this feeling of aspiring towards the next accomplishment ending” - I had my fair share of mental health struggles and the hedonistic treadmill of a professional education is real (I think this kinda goes hand in hand with recognizing our own past success), and I highly recommend talking to a therapist if you’re able. Also reliving experiences that affirm your passion for medicine. Journaling can help, sometimes just seeing dysfunctional thinking on paper is enough to make you snap out of it. Final thought - I am very thankful my dad went through the IMG journey so I had the opportunity to study medicine myself, and I think your future children will be very fortunate to have a self-aware, providing parent like yourself. Good luck with your scores!

Hi! First of all, I appreciate the time you put into watching and commenting on this vlog. Thank you so much for your thoughts and advice. The results come out this week and I’ve been particularly snappy towards my husband, through no fault of his at all. And it’s really been so hard to focus on studying for the OET because it’s honestly no big deal for people who can speak English fluently, and because every so often I would go on reddit to read the r/step 2 thread for… well any sort of validation or idk anything really. And I don’t know if it’s the nerves or what but I just can’t find peace these past few days. Really hoping that these feelings will pass, and that I could find a group of friends soon. But yes, I’m definitely going to look into therapy.

RUclips randomly recomended me this video and I enjoyed very much. I'm also an IMG (not an american citizen like you, brazilian) and listened to this video while doing some data extraction for a paper I'm working on. I would like to ask you: why did you decided to do your medical training outside of USA? Wish you the best of luck with the step 2 CK results!

Hi! Thanks for watching/listening! I’ve always felt like I had one foot in each country growing up. It was always a big “what if” for me. Like what if my family didn’t move to the US when I was 10? What would life be like as an adult in the country that I was so proud to have hailed from? So that was why I went ahead and did it for medical school. That, and med school in the Philippines, especially the school I got accepted into (gets government subsidies for tuition because it’s the country’s top public med school), is very affordable.

Thank you for this. I really appreciate it. The wait for the scores is killing me. But I know that no matter the result, I still have my health and my family with me, so it’s not gonna be the end of the world if I don’t get the result I want.

Hi! I’m sorry it took me a while to respond! I just finished taking step 2, and I am planning on making exactly that kind of video (long form) when I get my results back with a pass🤞 Also, thank you for your comment! I never know if my content is reaching anyone that needs/appreciates it, so seeing an M1 looking at my stuff makes me so happy.

Hi! Thank you! I guess I initially made this video with the idea that I'm probably not going to actually post any of them, so it goes without saying that the planning of these clips was virtually nonexistent. HAHAHA. But well, here I am, months later, putting this kind of content out on the internet.
