Why was there a Potato Chip Theme Park?
Просмотров 56 тыс.Год назад
What’s in a name? I present a deep dive nobody asked for into the Irish crisp (potato chip) theme park: ‘Tayto Park’. Tayto is an Irish institution and for years I’ve been fascinated that there was a theme park based on it. My obsession reached new heights when in February 2022 they announced the park would be changing its name, prompting national outrage. But why is it happening? Why does it m...

Why are you booing me I’m right. Disneyland’s “it’s a small world” holds a special place in my heart. I also think it's about the Cold War. Here I dive into the cultural context it was created within, the design principles behind it, and how the fear of nuclear weapons and atomic war played a role in the creation of this unique and wonderful ride. The title might seem like a bit of a stretch, b...

I grew up with this ride, experiencing it being a yearly tradition as a child. Now that I’m pushing 30, I still visit the park at least twice a year just to get away from it all. I think Efteling established such a strong emotional connection with me and other Dutch people because it allows us to reconnect with our culture, myths and sagas from the Netherlands and the rest of north western Europe, in a country/world/time that’s highly industrialized and fast paced. Dutch people are highly nostalgic. It would break my heart if something ever happend to it.

Great video, but you missed one aspect of the ride. Besides visuals and music. Droomvlucht also has a scent experience. When you enter the forest for the first time, you can smell eucalyptus and flowers. Ton knew that when we are sleeping most of our senses are turned off. Our eyes are closed and we basically can't hear that well. Only our nose is still working and even stronger compared to when we are awake. (For example it's our nose that warns us when there is a fire, when we are asleep.) That's why he chose the sharp mix of Eucalyptus en sweet flowers for the ride. Two years ago I got to make and design the packaging of the scent sticks and roomsprays they now sell as merchandise in the gift shop. They gave me a detailed explanation about what the scent stood for and why Ton chose these scents for the ride. It was very fascinating.

@@MikeFromThePartyThanks! Fata Morgana also has a nice story about the scent used in the ride. In Fata Morgana they use the scent of fabric softener. When Ton van der Ven visited Morocco when he did research for the ride. There where shops selling expensive clothes to the rich. In the back alley they washed the fabric and used fabric softener. Ton brought back that scent and made it into a perfume. Because only rich people could afford these clothes. You can only smell that scent in the room with the Sultan and the treasure room with the Djinn.

Beautifully laid out video essay!! I came off Flight of Passage feeling breathless and awestruck the one time I got to ride it, and I attributed the powerful weightiness I felt in my chest in the moments after to sheer awe - but I think you're right, there's also a complex, wistful emotion that I didn't even realize was also at play. I don't know that I'd call it grief - perhaps "longing"? Looking back, I think it felt almost exactly like hugging a family member goodbye knowing it will be months before I see them again, or having a nice meal in the final hour of a best-in-my-lifetime vacation knowing it's about to end and the next stop is the airport security line. Or maybe I'm just ignorant and longing is merely an element of grief? Somehow it felt like whatever sadness I was feeling was tinged in more than a little bit of happy contentment - a journey well traveled, even if it's ending. Found your channel through your appearance on Watcher Podcasts' Carousel of Progress episode, and I'm so glad I did!

I think the key thing that a lot of people forget is horror IS camp, it’s entertainment, it’s not meant to be serious. And the art of scare attractions is again the entertainment factor not that it’s meant to genuinely frighten you, although it does for some. So I agree, Saw the Ride is camp but so is the film and so are all horror films.

[SPOILERS FOR WAKE THE TIGER] I just went to Wake the Tiger for the first time yesterday and I really liked it! I think it really succeeded as a themed experience and I felt like I knew what to expect from watching this video as I think it describes it well and a lot better than the actual marketing. I didn't expect live actors which really impressed me for the most part, there were only three live actors in the main section when I went (a Saturday in June). Two which were roaming and were partially in character and seemed to be doing other jobs as well as acting and one stationary actor in the secret library area who was entirely in character. I talked to each of the actors about certain things through out mostly asking about themselves and the world and found that to be the most rewarding part of the experience. If there were more characters I would of liked to met more characters specifically from each of the guilds. I also don't think Wake the Tiger would need lots of actors as there as a lot to do but I think it would help the world feel a little more alive. I think I must have missed the quiz to join a guild at the end, I'm not sure if this might have been removed with the expansion now open. I felt the expansion was a bit of a downgrade from the main experience, It had some really interesting set pieces, specifically the plane room, but I felt it fell short in a few places (I'm also not sure if its entirely finished as there were some rooms closed off). There was a main hall with a large projection mapped face on it which felt like the centre of the expansion and rooms surrounding it with more abstract things inside. I don't think the expansion captured the same magic as the main experience mostly with the really modern aesthetic which in the main experience in flows between more natural environments and abstract and modern areas more seamlessly. I didn't like the use of AI art in Wake the Tiger I felt like it really took me out of the world and could have been replaced with some other effects especially as it was mostly just used on small screens around the experience. Overall Wake the Tiger is really good and I will definitely go back, If you like theme parks and themed experiences you should go.

Also the Jenny Nicholson line was great.

I was first thinking "Well why not use reflections to show Bella kissing Edward from a different angle" but then though " Oh never mind, I forgot Edward is a vampire and it wouldn't work since Bella would look like she's making out with the air like an actor with a fully CGI character". Snow White ride could benefit that effect with some kind of mirror, water or any other magical reflections while still letting the guests see through her 1st POV. That would also help them to know they are seeing from her view.
