    Take manufacture maintenance intervals and cut them in half. For any manufacturer. I had a KTM, and I have a kawasaki I think both of them say to change oil at 8,000 mile intervals. You gotta be insane to do that. I wouldnt do that to a car. I usually do my bikes about every 2,000 miles, and my car every 3,000 miles, and keep up on your valve adjustments.

    From what i can gather, its the camshafts failing on them. My knowledge on camshafts is that they only take a very short time to run in ie a few hours. They are not like pistons that need to bed in over nany miles. They also run in at higher revs because running at tick over puts more stress on the surfaces. I think the issues that most people are having are genuine issues that KTM needs to sort.

    Love how to break in your motorcycle commentary's. Fact is your engine was ran full hard at the factory before you even got your grubby mitts on it. Ran a brand new 1190R hard from day one for 40K klms just regular maintenance, didn't miss a beat, didn't use oil, with only a couple of valves needing clearance adjustment at the 30K service. Would I buy a 7/890, not a chance in hell.

  • @adamhrachowina9119
    @adamhrachowina9119 2 месяца назад

    While i understand where your coming from i dont completely agree. I know people that don't properly service their 7/890's and have never had a issue, and others that use a dealer and have had a string of problems My first KTMs were 1993/94 SX125's, that was the early days of shedding a reputation for unreliability and ktm has done a marvelous job to top the market since then. I've had a mix of jap and euro since then. However ktm are earning and deserving a bad reputation for refusing to sort issues that other marques would issue recalls for or warranty. As for running in, I ran my 890 in like I've run in every bike/ car road or race engine I've had or built over the last 40+ years. Ktms method is an arse covering exercise. At Japanese factory's each bike is run through a full rpm range up and down the box on the rollers as it leaves the production line, they aren't as fragile as people think. Yes there are the nuggets that thrash engines from cold, sit at a fixed rpm for the whole break in period only to suddenly unleash it at that magic mileage number (clueless), those who sit and idle an engine from cold for ten mins before riding and other things they do that don't help beak in and engine life expectancy. Build tolerances are critical and an engine can run flat out from new if built correctly....which is where ktm are seeming to vary wildly. Parts falling off these bikes isn't a factory issue, its a dealer issue as they carry out a PDI and have a small amount of components to assemble out of the crate. I experienced a loose skid plate despite waiting a week on delivery for the PDI, i would rather have had the bike arrive in a crate and go through the whole thing myself, but its a liability and warranty requirement. Lesson for those that moan about their KTM falling to bits - dont take it for granted that a PDI is your insurance from loose or impending loose parts. It is YOUR responsibility as the operator to check for loose parts before and after each ride. All my issues so far have been random electrical problems, all related to the crap bosch euro 5 ecu. Mechanically its been sound 🤞, its been thrashed to death but is still relatively low mileage. I too dont get the high mileage in due to my job, but there is a huge list of people that have followed KTMs schedule to the letter and have had 2k + bills to repair with substantial down time after KTM refused to warranty failures that quite frankly are KTMs problem. As for bikes sitting at a dealer for months awaiting repair/resolution, well thats just unacceptable. Camshafts on both 7/890 models regardless of S/R or Rally failing around the 16k mark is pitiful but yet ktm still reject many claims even on fully dealer serviced bikes. Immobilizer issues, starting on one cylinder, poor idling, random 02 engine codes with misfire, complete flame out when closing the throttle to name just a few of the problems THOUSANDS of owners are experiencing. Then add in leaking fork seals on bikes that have never seen the dirt, shocks leaking, crankshaft seals leaking, faulty m/c on the early bikes, tft going black... I've had lambda faults, immobilizer faults, starting problems and idle misfires, none of which prevented the bike from running and were more of a pita than anything else. However the random flame outs that nearly caused me to crash were scary and unexplained by ktm. Ktm usa even advised to run lower octane fuel to cover up shortcomings in the overly lean mapping... Decatting and remapping the ecu sorted the stalling and 02 issues - probably as it ignores the 02 now and actually gets a decent air fuel ratio that enables it run better and cooler (stock fuelling was leaning into the high 16's ! ) MTC failure warning no longer happens as its bypassed along with the ABS which is a menace. I used the dealer to get the measley one year warranty but will not use the dealer now. I check camshaft clearance at 8k interval's and my oil changes are done at 1200 miles. The running issues last year i ended sorting with a third party after the dealer wanted to keep the bike to look at, but on the same hand admitted i had already done everything that they would have checked 🤔 An exercise in taking my hard earned money. Despite these issues its a keeper and there's nothing on the later versions of any significant thay would prompt me to get another. The list of mods to mine goes way beyond a few bolt on parts, with bespoke aluminum and carbon components, suspension mods and huge weight savings and is all listed in the lightweight thread on advrider. At near 180 kg with fuel is a far cry from the truck like 196kg dry weight of the std R model. As for the ready to race bs, nice one ktm for asking 600 quid more on top of a 13k bike just to get it to function as advertised in the promo videos. Ktm will start to loose sales this year to the likes of Kove that are providing what the customers are asking for. As for reliability, well the majority of ktm parts come from china anyway. I hope ktm as a company take a stock of their poor customer service as most of their dealers are excellent but their hands are tied. Sorry if it comes across as a rant, its not meant to, ( just woke up after a nightshift 🤗) But yeah, the bikes are damn solid and have a lot going for them when everything is going well. But because of ktms lack of support they can be an expensive nightmare for some poor folks when things prematurely wear out or other gremlins get in there and the reason why ktm continues to loose more sales to other marques Thankfully I'm in a position to ba able to carry out my own work, be it an engine rebuild or suspension revalve, otherwise if I'd had to rely on the dealer the 890 would have gone a long time ago...

    With respect, 2000 miles in two years is hardly RTW stuff. The 890 is well known for having issues, are they issues that are deal breakers, that depends on the owner but these self same owners will be the ones you are mentioning so they've every right to complain.

      @@NomadScotlandregardless it’s hard to comment on other people’s reliability experiences when all you’ve done is bolted a few aftermarket parts on then ridden 2000 miles in two years. The bike has 9,300 mile service intervals by the book, reliability claims might have more weight if you’d got to the first 9,300 mile service before making any opinions. You are also blaming owners for KTM’s poor quality control other manufacturers get right, some critical safety quality control issues like swingarm bolts falling out.
