Thank you for the great video! I have a FMJ-4B3 on my Allis B. When you had "CENT" displayed on the flywheel and verified TDC on #1, your governor gear grooves that drive the magneto were horizontal. When I adjusted my rotor to fire at the cap's #1 position, the magneto teeth were not horizontal. Is this OK or should all Allis tractors' TDC for #1 occur when those grooves are horizontal? Thank you!
@BenedictSawmilling pretty sure they are all horizontal, is it possible the gears inside your mag are not aligned properly? Do you have a FMJ or a FMX mag?
@JPN76 It's a FMJ, according to the stamping. There is a C and A on a plastic gear inside the bigger cover on the mag. My understanding is to align the bevel on the tiny metal gear in the mag with the C on the plastic gear inside the big cap because it's clockwise rotation when viewed from the front of the engine (A is for anticlockwise). Do I have that wrong? My mag teeth are oriented at roughly 2 and 8 o'clock. The impulse kicks the rotor past each plug wire tower at the right time, but I don't know what to make of it because it rotates it so much when the impulse kicks (it's hard to tell exactly when spark is delivered without referring to the flywheel, I guess). Thank you for taking the time to reply!
@BenedictSawmilling you are correct c on bevel, I'm pretty sure all should be horizontal. When spin mag backwards and you set rotor to #1 what position is the cooler when facing it. Give me a clock face position like 1 and 7 o'clock if that makes sense with horizontal being 9 and 3.
@@JPN76 When the magneto drive teeth are horizontally level (or close), the rotor is a little past the #1 contact. Maybe the tail of the contactor would still be touching it and I'm being too picky. I should probably just try it. To me, the rotor looks best aligned when the mag drive teeth are at 8 (L tooth) and 2 (R tooth), when looking at the radiator end of the magneto.
@BenedictSawmilling i think you are good. Once running above a couple hundred rpm and when the coupler disengages it advanced and will be good.
hello there i'm looking to restore one like this was wondering if you found any manuals or how the restoration is going
I have not. Information it slim on this. I have this one on the schedule for a teardown video soon.
@@JPN76 great can't wait for it, not to be pushy but do you have a timeline to put out that video.
@jaredfunk9116 i did not but now it just moved a little closer. I changed jobs a few months back and once I get settled I'll have more free time again.
could you please do one on a series 2 d-17 lift arm hydraulic pump repair ?
@dewayneclark4472 if I had one I probably would. Lol
fantastic acheivement, what sort of cost was incurred?❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@mechanics4all405 Thanks, I lost track of cost but probably 2500.00 including a 600.00 parts tractor. If you stay away from the tractor sites as much as you can you save some money. A good example is seals. On the tractor sites the seals cost 300.00 I went on the national seal site and matched up the bore and shaft size to get national seal numbers and order online to save 200.00.
@@JPN76 fantastic, loved every minuite of it,have great Xmas
@mechanics4all405 thanks, Merry Christmas!
*Hello. this is only on cars with petrol engines. that spark has a voltage of 20,000 volts and comes from the coil*
@Pera-Peric um no this spark is not from the coil it's about a meter from the coil and half a meter from the closest plug wire. It's static electricity building up in the outer ring of the harmonic balancer because the belt is swollen. Once I washed the oil off this started.
@JPN76 to create such a spark, a high voltage is required. is it possible with diesel engine ?
@Pera-Peric static electricity is high voltage. Can build to thousands of volts. This can happen with any engine that has a harmonic balancer that the outter ring is electricity insulated from the center. This belt was oil soaked and swelled slightly, this started after I washed the belt off and everything g was good and dry.
Do you make the project available?

What’s that on?
@DRNEGOLICIS it was originally on a 747
Wish I knew someone close to me that could restore my 51 b model. It was my grandfathers then passed all the way down to me since new. She hasn’t ran in a year now.
@PlemonsLawnCare it can get expensive depending on the level of restoration. I have about 2500 in parts and got the cheapest I could get and made a lot. The labor is the most. I probably have 600 hrs in it.
@@JPN76it’s a build I would t care what it took to restore it to where it was. I have so many great memories growing up on it.
@PlemonsLawnCare I understand that. I grew up on this one and wanted to do this for years. As far as old tractors go, this is one of the easier ones with not a lot of parts. And replacement parts are available for a lot of it. For a lot of the little stuff and sheet metal, i found a parts tractor, and that made it nice.
Great video. I just got the same engine and don't know much about these this is a great insight and will really help me when I am ready to start working on it. Thanks!
@heffptbo Thank you! Eventually I'll restore this engine on here and put it on a tractor. Stay tuned!
@JPN76 awesome, i look forward to seeing that
Do you sell the kit for the smaller j5 figures.
@Quote_the_manc not at this time. I am working on some but time is hard to come by
I have a 1048 B and there only seems to be one set of timing marks on the flywheel. Is that normal.
I mean 1948
@erniepost641 they call for the same part number in the shop manual so im not sure. If yours are in the right place the second set of marks do not matter. Im not sure why they are there anyway.
I think the “AR” inside the hexagon is the symbol for the Allyne-Ryan foundry of Cleveland. It was in operation from 1913 to 1960, I think. They specialized in casting cylinder blocks, heads, and other automotive components. Unfortunately, I have not turned up any literature featuring that logo, for definite proof. However, I have seen that symbol on a 1926 Chandler cylinder head, Cletrac tractor parts, Seagrave V-12’s, Mack truck engines from the late Twenties and early Thirties, and White automobile and truck engines from the Teens into the 1950s. I found articles that corroborate that Allyne-Ryan did work for all of these companies. An article about Allyne-Ryan appeared in the July 1916 issue of The Foundry. It mentions them casting blocks for six-cylinder Northway engines.
That makes a lot of sense. It turns out it is a northway. Thanks
Thanks. You filled in a lot of gaps.
@@davidensign3440 you are welcome!
I highly recommend to invest in a spin on coolant filter Kit; with zinc plug, I used many brands, basic and with the zinc is highly recommended...... if you missed out why, saves cast iron. In my early years, I did a lot of remanufacturing of Cat and other lines. I seen a lot of water pumps after coolers / heads / blocks. more over, you can buy the filter already super charged with antifreeze in it, which will drop the water down to something below freezing. it's the zinc I'm pushing here, with in the filter. I should had said something long ago, but hadn't, didn't want to ruffle anyone, but after seeing so many rads and heads & blocks water pumps / rust / rot, I can't under stand why I haven't seen anyone investing in such a easy preventive means, way in protecting these small engine system. 70 year old plus parts are not easy to come by, more over, it will go away at some point.
@Sojourning_ this one had an extra hard life. I filled it with pond water most of the time in the fields when i was a kid.
eventually you got there. well done. must have been a great relief.. certainly it was for the watchers...
It was! Started so easy once everything was right
Thank you for the video!! I have one of these I'm piecing back together, you've done some things I need to check on mine!!!
You are welcome! Good Luck!
You got it in the end. I love those old hit & miss engines.
Yes Sir! It was awesome it fired off so quick once I went through and got the trip mech right.
oh no... not good news.. tough luck , hard work mate.
Was easier the second time, LOL
been waiting for this work. Mr. Professor.. another well made video.

Yeah "I" see the typo at the end.... LOL
Have been a machinist all my life and I'm now 66. I really can appreciate all the Machining that's gone into this little motor I wish I was still working so I could make one of these little guys. Good job!
Thank you sir i really appreciate that coming from a real machinisht! This was my learn machining project. I guess i can make a part if needed. Half of it was probably done the wrong way an for sure not perfect but its a hobby and was still fun!
I am the allis kid
Did not see a seal between the outer bearing and the castle nut. Maybe it was there, and I could not see it.
@scrambler69-xk3kv If you are talking about the front hubs, there is only a seal on the inner side. The screw on cap seals the outer.
I am repairing a mag for another guy...."B" I took of the lower cap......do I need to time it( the rotor) to the gear on the Mag.........?? Clayton
@claytona8962 if you have a FMJ mag then yes. Mine is a FMX so i didnt have this step.
@@JPN76 Ok......I got good spark with the first cap on.......Using a screw driver in the hole, but when i put the outer cap on w the 4 plug wires i dont have any spark at all??
@claytona8962 look at this video around the 20 minute mark. ruclips.net/video/K-7vlWzzlI0/видео.htmlsi=8CY8T9rIzBwIHpil

@gwheyduke Yes Sir!
Hi, whereabouts do you source your new bearings and seals from? Thanks for your help
@JonoHaack the seals were autozone. But i did not need bearings. Between the two tractors, i had what i needed
Very good video, and information, Thank You much.
@@kenlutz5243 thanks you are welcome
Most complete videos I've seen. Extremely well explained & well filmed, to where a DIY person can teardown & rebuild with confidence! Thanks for sharing your knowledge & expertise!
@davidhall9804 Thanks. Honestly when i started this project i did not plan on filming it. I was reseaching on here and could not find enough detail. Most vids wete filmed far away and a lot edited out. I figured i could do better. Sure did make it take longer.
Man what an amazing video! Thanks for sharing. Those whizzers were well built. similar to my modern motorized bike build but so much nostalgia with these old school builds especially how you raised it from the dead. Nice work. I always make music for my videos but starting to think I don't need it after watching this. Wish the whizzer kit came back into production
Thanks and I agree
Love how American Friends love their tractors coming out in spring time.. great work
Very helpful video series, I have just started a collection of these old Bosch magnetos, Thank you so much !
Thank you! Ive started a collection of my own after this one.
1st thing I always do is use liquid wrench or some other brand of penetration oil on all fasteners, it makes such a difference.
Is the usb drive a HTC drive? I think i can make our the logo. I have tons of recycled usb sticks.
Its what ever cheap stick that Hyundai gave out in training.
Nice Toughbook
Lol yup.
Been in direct sun all day almost too hot to touch and still running
the engine explosion time is early, delay it a few degrees
Its actually late. It fires a degree ish after tdc. When i turn it slow and it fires it jumps i the same direction and does not kick back.
Need to put it in something cool now!
I know. I have no idea what though. Was planning to make a display case for it and have it set up to start easy
That's bad ass. Finally came together
Thanks. Only took forever
Impressing
Sounds great ! How about a little notch in the flywheel and a knot in the rope, like the older lawn mower type engines used?
Thanks. I plan to build a cylinder with a notch and bolting it tonthe front of the flywheel
Very Sweet!!
Thank you sir
Beautiful job!
Thanks
Those are some wonderful roads to ride a tractor down
Hello I have a broken one. Do you think I could pay you to repair it ?
I really dont want to get into that. I lucked out here and it was a part i knew how to fix. If you find someone to do it i have most the parts from this one on ebay. What is yours doing?
@@JPN76 well it was working perfectly fine that poof it just died. It still powers on. I think a capacitor went bad.
Compliments on the production quality. Great lighting and focus. I inherited a1948 Allis Chalmers C that had been 'converted' to a coil ignition by modifying the mag. Difficult to start, kicked back hand cranking. Put a quality rebuilt Fairbanks Morse mag on it and discovered I cannot tilt the mag over far enough to time it properly. The conclusion can only be the mag drive gear teeth are not aligned properly on the machined marks under the front engine cover! I better not find paperwork from the engine rebuilder. Your video clinches it. It is not possible to mount the flywheel incorrectly to change the location of the timing marks, Allis Chalmers made sure of that.
Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you about the mag timing. Does sound like the governor gear is not timed correctly.
Lifters and push rods are cool- They will be amazing to watch exposed
