Five Great Folk-Rock Bands You Should Listen To
The fat bearded one returns to some folk-rock…Which had absolutely no connection to his previous ones bringing in the views.
This is a selection of what he’s calling “traditional folk-rock”. Which means it draws from the traditional folk of England, Scotland, Ireland and, in one case, further afield.

Hi Hedley. I have a home 10 minutes west of The Taos Pueblo featured on the back cover of the Taos record. Believe me when I say Taos is one of the most magical places on earth. You should visit one day. Taos New Mexico is so amazing that Dennis Hopper made his home there in 1971 after filming Easy Rider there. He bought the 12 acre estate (bordering sacred Pueblo Indian Reservation Land) that Tony Lujan had built for Mabel Dodge in 1918. Thanks for the great folk recommendations. I’ve really been getting into the folk genre more these days. Great to see some titles I should look out for. Cheers! Steve

Ha ha ha! Boundaries are immaterial when one listens to music, the music is what it is. It's only an issue when you want to talk about music, make self-indulgent videos on RUclips, or attempt to describe the sound against pre-understood norms. There'll always be an aggressively mannered naysayer, who will state, "I don't care about genres, I just like music!". We'll good luck walking into a record store and finding everything filed under 'Music', or being able to give someone an impression of a music but saying, "You know, it sounds like music".

Next, there are LOTS of great Canadian folk rock bands, just a few off the top of my head -- Great Lake Swimmers, Be Good Tanyas, Lightning Dust, check em out if you hadn't yet. Hedley, you hit the nail on the head on trying to describe American folk rock. Kind of pointless exercise that we have to go through trying to describe a record to an audience. I’d agree with Jonathan, northern New Mexico would be a quintessential American experience for you, and you’d get the opportunity to crate dig for American music that’s hard to get in the UK. I only have the Appaloosa of the albums you showed. Apparently Kooper passed on them after meeting them because he had too many projects on the go. After they left his office they played for the secretaries. Kooper went out to see for himself and signed on as a producer as a result. Too bad they never made another record. Cheers.

Hi Hedley, another interesting video. I agree with you about the distinction between American folk rock and that of the UK and Europe. I often struggle with a lot of American acts to describe whether they are folk rock or country rock! 4 acts shown who I am not au fait with but who I liked from the needle drops - the first 4 acts. Appaloosa I picked up recently and showed in my last video - really nice album. For more actual folk inspired acts what about The Decemberists with their album Hazards of Love? Also bands such as Espers, Cordelia's Dad, Tempest, Fern Knight and Heron Oblivion. More modern bands I know - struggled to think of older acts that utilised traditional forms more heavily.

Hi Pete. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. There is a massive amount of crossover between the folk and country camps, and I share your struggle. Exactly why I suggested my next video might be acts that have one foot in both genres. Of course, it doesn't really matter what the specifics are when you're sat back enjoying the music, but the minute you want to talk about it or describe the music in a video, that's when the problems start. I couldn't imagine the nightmares record shop owners have with sorting their stock into genres! I keep forgetting to say that I'm focusing on music from the late 60s and 70s, but that's not to say I'm not into more modern variants. I used to love The Decemberists, back when they were decidedly more folky, but lost some interest when they went more indie rock after Hazards of Love. That said, their most recent album was a return to their older sound, but I've not picked it up. I've got a couple of CDs by Espers, and I have heard Fern Knight, but those others are new to me. I'll be checking them out. I'm planning some videos looking at contemporary UK and US (and inevitably Canadian) bands and artists who are producing modern folk-rock...Or is that country-rock...Or Americana...Or freak folk...Or cosmic American music... You're not wrong. Anything played on acoustic guitars by solo up to trios in the 1960s was called "folk music" and it (or what it was called) evolved into "singer/songwriter music". There were a few traditional folk acts around but by and large no one other than extreme die-hards remembers any of them. Here's a funny story: I was in a duo in the early 1970s that later morphed into a full blown band and we recorded an album with a drummer. We sent the album to the local Chicago classical FM station WFMT that had a folk music show on Saturday nights called "The Midnight Special" hosted by Mike Nichols. He passed on playing it because it had drums on it which, to his mind at least, was a big no-no in folk, or it's derivatives, music. That was until Joan Baez released an album with percussion on it that got heavy airplay on his show and the floodgates were opened. I guess we were ahead of our time!

Try to slip in some Bob Dylan or other non traditional singer-songwriters, and you'll be out on your ear. I get it, they're trying to preserve the folk heritage, but it does come across as gatekeeping. It all started with Ewan MacColl's Critics Group in the 60s. He ran that group with a rod of iron. Hedley I cannot tell you how your introduction of folk rock bands to my musical tastes have grown my collection! The newest is the Unicorn Laughing Up My Sleeve record from a long ago video. Most of what I’ve picked up has that Buffalo Springfield, New Riders , Laurel Canyon sound. Very Byrds-ie too! I’ve added such bands as Santa Fe, Steeleye Span, Unicorn, McGuinness Flint etc. Please keep this theme going! As our tastes seem to run together. This is Paul from the western United States but I’m another thickening bearded man talking about records! Thanks Hedley!!!

@@paulprincipe6975 Hey Paul! I'm sorry if watching my videos is costing you money. I know how that goes 😁 Don't worry, I have plenty of other records in and around this genre to keep me going for a while, and ensure your wallet takes a battering. Mind you, it's not like most of the records I feature are particularly expensive, just not so easy to track down... depending on where you live. I was in conversation with Pat Martin from Unicorn a while back about doing an interview with him, but to be honest I've not sorted it out as I'm quite nervous about doing a video with him. Maybe I'll get over my fears and do it soon. Cheers - Hedley

Only the final recording with the female singer caught my ear , and then only slightly !. Not country rock , more like county influenced pop to my ears , i see Skynard mentioned down thread , when did southern rock become country rock theres a difference , ever since the advent of alt country the boundaries have become blurred and a once very distinct style is lost .

Good stuff Hedley. I don't listen to much folk or folk-rock these days, though I did dig out my Martin Carthy best-of the other day when I was stewing some apples...it seemed apt. Irish folk I do like quite a bit when I hear it. Lovely vibe on the Scullion record, nice cover art too. The ornately folky font on the 5 Hand Reel LP has something of XTC's 'English Settlement' album about it. The opening six-notes of their needledrop bore a remarkable resemblance to the guitar riff from Layla.

@@jamesgriffithsmusic Thanks James. It's always fun to revisit my folk rock records. It's also gratifying to hear other people expressing an interest in this music, as I was totally alone at school in my love of folk music. Let's face it, folk music is far from cool when you're 15, but I feel justified in my choices. I get you with the Five Hand Reel album. I noticed that later CD copies had a variation of the cover. It's a bugger for ringwear.

@@deancronin6934 Hi! I haven't listened to much DeDannan, and don't have any of their albums, but what I've heard sounds pretty good. I know that Dónal Lunny produced their first album, so that must be worth a listen. I've got a couple of albums by Dolores Keane, who I believe was in De Dannan. I can't say I particularly like them as the 80s production is pretty horrible. I do have a couple of Mary Black albums. I think one is an early compilation. She has a great voice, but again some of the 80s production is not to my taste. Cheers - Hedley
