Hot Cocoa Christmas Cottage DIY One of our Christmas traditions is to have a hot cocoa bar throughout the season. Our cocoa bar is self-serve with everything you need in one spot (except the water). This hot cocoa cottage can be created using a basic bookcase or hutch. Creating a roof unit to set on top of the bookcase is an easy way to set up the cocoa cottage and then take it off after Christ...
DIY Pirate Ship - Halloween party backdrop
Просмотров 743 месяца назад
For my mom’s birthday on Halloween, we did a pirate theme. Everyone was asked to wear a pirate costume and I decked out the dining room for the party. Creating this faux pirate ship façade was so easy and affordable. To keep the pirate mast upright, I just placed it into the umbrella hole of our patio table. A pirate themed party is so fun and this fake ship just made it so much more festive. B...

Beautiful Amy!
I bought a Beddy that got returned online and didn’t realize the zipper was burned in the dryer. I’m a beginner sewer. Would you be able to help guide me to replace it? It’s all one long zipper full size I see I can buy like 7 yards of zipper but I don’t under stand the stoppers and where you hook into the sheets how any of this is done if that makes sense.
This is the video I watched to figure it out when I made my zipper bedding. ruclips.net/video/X7j5jVVxm30/видео.html I hope it helps. Best wishes!
Lovely ideas❤
Thank you Linda!

lovely ideas!
Thank you so much!
Good job!
Thank you Renee!
We've been toying with this idea and our wall is about the same size as yours. The calculator is helpful. We may do a bit different on the picture rail, but the rest is exactly what we want to do. Thank you.
Thanks Linda! I still love the beauty it adds to the space and I'm having fun adding artwork to the rail. Best wishes on your project!!
Thank-you! I've wanted to put up sconces for years. I did not think about using disc/puck lights. There will be💡....🤗
Glad it helped! Enjoy picking out some pretty fixtures~
Would this be possible to attack with command strips/hooks of some kind?
Unfortunately not. The wood frame weighs too much. However, you could use longer side boards so that the sit on the floor and then your bed pushes up to it.
Where can I buy these and what are they called? I don't see where and what they are names.
The company is called Worth Home, and they continue to come out with new lights. www.worthhp.com/
I bought a pair of them.
very helpful video. thanks!
I'm glad it was helpful!
Very nice!
Thanks so much!
Awesome job, Thanks!!
Thanks! It was a fun project!
How much did you pay? It turned out beautiful. Will the dye rub off or will you have to reapply again. Thank you in advance for your follow-up. Can you do a part 2 video?
The dye and fixative weren't expensive but this settee isn't huge. The dye hasn't faded or rubbed off at all (and it's been used and moved to different spaces in our home). I suppose if it fades over time, I could redye. I can do a follow up soon but it will probably be a RUclips Short (1 min. video) as there's not too much to share - it's still looking great!
Drill holder!! Excellent idea, I need one. Thanks.
I love that idea! You’re welcome!
brilliant
Thank you so much!
Hello! I am looking to use this method to transform a chocolate brown sofa to black, it's the suede like material, I am curious if you could possibly explain what the difference in texture may be IF there is any?? Also, can you explain applying fixative to prevent staining or color running?
Dying from brown to black would definitely work. I don't know how the suade like material would absorb or take to the dye - I imagine it would be fine as long as there's no waterproofing or stain resistant treatment on the fabric. Always test a small part underneath if possible. My settee has a velvet type feel but no stain protection or water resistance so it absorbed the dye well. I'm not sure how the fixative works exactly just that Rit highly recommends using it to seal in the color. It's necessary to use the fixative for clothing as well unless you want the dye washing out in the laundry. Using the fixative has prevented any of the dye from coming off onto our clothes and we live in a humid state so this was especially important to me.
Absolutely stunning. I've decided not to use MDF, ever, now that it's coming out how toxic it is to breathe in ANY of the dust whatsoever - akin to asbestos, health experts/biological builders are saying! I was going to frame in a built in wardrobe hack with MDF, got it cut to size at DIY store, and even having the pieces in my bedroom for a bit I got a headache, so this stuff is NOT good. I took it to the dump and am using plywood instead. Not as smooth, but it's not as toxic either, and my health is my top priority.
That's a really great point about MDF. I think the primer and paint used over ours stopped any smells from coming through - we never smelled anything and my daughter is very sensitive. There are several alternatives to MDF and you have to pick what's best for you.
I really want to use your approach. What do you use to torch the resin? Does the plastic wrap stay on until the resin dries and then comes off? Thanks!
This is such an easy process and you'll love the results. I used a mini butane torch: rstyle.me/+y2JSKdBbq8AVj1-6lF7y3g but I think a heat tool used for scrapbooking could also work: rstyle.me/+5iAkJ3IadIjSgKztRzZf8A If you skip the high heat step, you will have bubbles. The plastic wrap comes off after the resin is set, it's just used to keep dust off the setting resin. Best wishes on your project!
Nice display
Thank you!!
Cutting the hole for the wheel hangar depends on the hardware you purchase - check manufacturer specks before drilling for bolts that hold the wheel hangar. My hardware calls for 2 inches.
That's right! My video is only for my particular hardware and just an overall view that it can be done without hiring out.
I liked it better the original color would have matched my living room perfect--But thanks for the info--I have a light blue loveseat I want to dye brown--Now I know how!
I also loved the original chartreuse color but the stains the lights spots didn't work for me. Dying a light blue to brown should work out really well. Best wishes with your project.
If the fixture is light enough... Had anyone tried 3M sticky to hold up the whole thing? Trying to avoid holes in the wall...
I haven't personally found a brass and glass light fixture that's light enough to not use screws. Maybe a plastic fixture would be light enough but the bulb would also add weight.
I'm currently dying a red couch given to me, dying it black. It's kind of stressful, any tips for going red to black?
I think back should cover any color just fine, but I've never tried it personally. I would think that the red could cause a brown tint to possibly come through the black - to counter this I'd dye additional layers to make sure it's covered. Doing this on a sunny day should help to see the coverage you're getting. Best wishes on a successful project - sounds great!
So pretty, but you could have used mini cookie cutter to waste less of the printed clay.
Can I get the links to the sconces bulbs please
There are several brands out there, but these have lasted years for me and are still going: rstyle.me/+IsV0zpKhE9R2oWTXcR-5sw
Color bleed through ?
No color coming off or fading. The fixative has done it's job. I'm planning on doing a short follow-up video on this settee to show how it's doing.
I think this is absolutely beautiful and spot on style for Thanksgiving. Cheers!!
Thanks so much Christine. I appreciate your comment!
What is that fluted material you used on the lower doors? Thank you.
It's called pole wrap and comes in a few sizes: rstyle.me/+C9nGJu7pYXyciwVRNqHFjw
do you think it's necessary use a carpet or upholstery cleaner to clean the sofa after dying it? especially for an everyday sofa? second question: i have a bright blue couch and want to go for a dark teal green color. do you think the blue of the couch will affect the final color and i need to account for that or do you think i should just find the exact color on their website and it will overlay the current color.
The rinsing of the dye and then applying the fixative makes it ready to use. I have no idea about sealing it or treating it with anything else. If there's a spill after dying it I would clean as you would any other upholstery. The dye is set if you use the fixative so any staining would be particular to the fabric of the piece. From what I've read, you can't expect a perfect result going from a dark or medium color to a light or medium color. I would always test a spot underneath before investing and starting this type of project. If you asked me about going from a bright blue (color is subjective) to a dark forest green, I would guess that it would be fine, but teal is also subjective and it's hard to know without a photo. Definitely test and adjust to something darker if necessary. Best wishes to you, this sounds like it could be a beautiful project.
SO BEEAAUTIFUUUL ❤
Thank you so much!
That doesn’t look very Thanksgiving(ish). Orange mums, ghourds, cornucopia, etc is what’s needed
does the dye change the material feel?
Great question, Debbie! The dye did not change the fabric at all. In fact, with all the rinsing I think it feels softer since the vintage fabric had probably never been cleaned before. If you use fabric paint, it will be crunchy and change the feel, but not the dye.
Hi Amy- beautiful piece. How did it hold up over time? I am thinking about doing this to a canvas like material sectional 😬 am I crazy? My husband thinks so. 😂
It's been about a year and it still looks the same. The color hasn't faded, no dye has rubbed off, and I still love it. It's not our main sofa to sit on, but as a vintage accent piece, it's been great.
Where’s the link to the bulbs?
I don't know why the rating it 3.7 but I've been using my set of 4 for over a year, no problems. rstyle.me/+n1LJK1hncIQHaknyoMzDyQ I use these to charge the bulbs: rstyle.me/+vlQuQ6bwvnI0dIiHRjDYuw
So crafty!! I love this and I’m sure it made your mom’s day very special.
Awe, thanks! She loved it!
Very handy idea you've got a new sub! How has it held up one year later? Is it due to re dye?
Thanks for asking! The sofa looks great and the fixative works to keep dye from coming off.
Some use salt, I’m wondering if that is an unnecessary step.
I just followed the instructions on the RIT dye and fixative bottles and it worked perfectly. Spraying it on was definitely the fastest application.
Very helpful thanks :)
Thank you!
Does the couch have to be completely dry before you spray the fixative?
Thanks for asking. No, the fabric doesn't need to be completely dry before applying the fixative. Just make sure to fully rinse and apply as directed.
Hi there, so after the fixative is sprayed on, your rinsed it? I didn't see any water in your video so I'm curious.@@Amy804Sycamore
Beautiful!❤
Thank you! 😊

How do you clean it? It seems like it wouldn't be wipeable
This area isn't for food prep, but my husband does make his coffee over here. Fortunately, he works at the front of the counter and we haven't had any issues.
@Amy804Sycamore ok. Thx
Your video was very informative and easy to follow. I too have a vintage velvet couch ,using Rit dye with a sprayer then the fixative. I have a problem though ,the dye is still coming off on to my hands & i only gave it 1 coat ! Do you think extra coats of fixative will stop this? I went on the Rit dye website store and they recommend not to use Rit dye on furniture as you can't rinse it out . I might try spraying with scotch guard
I did a few coats of fixative so maybe that helped. I've had no dye come off on our skin or clothes. I also rinsed it thoroughly and air dried it out. I know RIT doesn't recommend it on furniture, but I took the risk and fortunately it worked out for me.
Amazing table scape! Where did you find the moon plates and are the owls napkins or plates?
Thank you! I got those on clearance at MyMindsEye.com
I so wish I saw this before installing mine! I might have overlapped the seams just the tiniest hairline amount because I encountered the gapping and shrinkage problem too. Wish I could see how you fixed your gaps with colored pencils!
I just grabbed my daughter's colored pencils in all the colors from the wallpaper and tested them out on paper first. I also used a regular pencil to darken some of the spots too. I almost cried when I saw the shrinkage!
Hello, I’m doing this with my sofa and I have one question. Can you add water to the fixative? Every other method you add water but when you want to use spray method it doesn’t say use water, I have a big sofa so I will have to use at least 10 bottles and it is not cheap here in Belgium 🥲
Great question! I googled this and found out: use 1/2 cup of ColorStay Dye Fixative with 3 gallons of water
Looks great! What a smart stuffy solution!
THanks Tara! We definitely have a stuffy farm over here.
Hey there is no liquid starch where I live, what can we use in place?
Corn starch and water. I don't remember the ratio though, but I'm sure it's here on the interwebs under someone's old fashioned hacks.
@@JustMe-jc2ft thank you!
Have you tried a organic paint? For example ECOS Paint or a lime wash paint
I haven't painted furniture, I read reviews about it leaving a crunchy texture. I have lime washed my walls, but I wouldn't do that to upholstered furniture either.
