Hogan in the Wild

I recently completed my masters and thought to myself, I don't want to be stuck behind a desk for the rest of my life. This led me to the creation of this channel. I'm at most peace in this world when I am in the woods or out on the lake.
This channel will consist of hunting, fishing, gardening, DIY projects, my family sauna cabin, and anything else related to the outdoors.
I can't wait to start this journey and who knows, maybe one day, I will be able to make this lifestyle a sustainable reality.

Last Steelhead Fishing Trip of the Spring
Просмотров 3304 месяца назад
I had a couple hours to go chase some steelhead before walleye opener. I went to a river I haven't been to in a couple of years and had some luck hooking into some nice fish. It would have been great to land one but anyone who steelhead fishes knows how tough that can be especially this unpredictable Spring. Thanks for watching.

DEAD Bait vs LIVE Bait - Northern Pike Ice Fishing

Epic Inland Lake Trout Bite! Ice Fishing Remote Lakes OFF GRID

My buddies Shoe, Brett, Mark, and I went chasing some Lakers through the hard water. Lakers are so much fun ice fishing, you can't beat some of the initial runs they make back down to the bottom. We had an amazing trip and explored some special remote places. The fish and the weather cooperated and it will definitely be a trip to remember. Hope you enjoy the video.
Jackrabbit Hunting (CATCH CLEAN COOK)
Просмотров 6447 месяцев назад
When Harper and I were out in SD pheasant hunting we saw a handful of Jackrabbits. We finally had a good clean shot on one and shot what I believe to be a younger rabbit. I had heard mixed reviews about the taste of Jackrabbit so I was eager to try it out and it was delicious as I expected it would be. Lots more meat than a cottontail rabbit too! Thanks for watching.

This is just a quick compilation from some of the first couple designated trout fishing trips I've done this year. What I love most about this fishing is the beauty that surrounds you if you go the extra mile to some of the remote walk in lakes. The fish is always a bonus then! Thanks for watching.

Awesome laker to start off with!
Thanks Ty! Hopefully I'll catch her again one day!
Hopefully so! I just caught my first and second ever lake trout out on Superior with Happy Hooker, so I feel the addiction
Awesome! Love to hear that!
Thanks for another fun video! That’s a beautiful lake with a great assortment of fish! The bass and trout were awesome!
Thanks for watching Tom!! I appreciate the comment! Definitely a special place.
What area are you hunting here in Minnesota?
The arrowhead
Nice looking fish and a master angler walleye!
Thanks Ty! Good weekend on the water. Hope you've been having some luck!
It's been high water, but my daughter and I got out last week off from work and lucked into a multi-species day (walleye, channel catfish, rock bass, and shorthead redhorse sucker) all from the bank.
That's awesome! Something different about catching fish from shore over a boat. I think I like it better
Thanks for the fun video! Is that the same lake you and your buddies fished on opening weekend? Very peaceful being the only boat on the lake! Moved from Cook, Mn in 2017, sure miss the north country.
Thanks Tom! Yes, it is the same area. Very blessed to have no traffic in the area. Hope you make it back up soon!
Love your videos! Beautiful fish, too!!! Thanks for sharing
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Looks like racoon...Couldn't see any incisors so not 100%...Anyways looks like you had a great day and this really inspires me to explore the NS when I get back.
Thats what I was thinking too. I appreciate the input and I hope you get out exploring soon!
wow ! nice fish! what body of water are you guys fishing?
Harper: "yeah, I've caught bigger" haha. Excellent work and some massive walters!
Haha exactly!! She's such a good boat dog now, hardly knew she was there even in all the chaos. Appreciate it Ty, hope you've been catching some fish too!
Did you get the walleye and trout in the same lake? Fun video! Keep them coming, really enjoy them!
Thanks Tom, I appreciate it! Yep the same lake, that first lake trout was 50 yds from our favorite walleye spot and we were going for walleyes haha
Good video, new subscriber
Thank you! I appreciate it
Enjoyed the video, what camera are you using if you dont mind my asking?
Just a GoPro Hero 9 Black still running strong like 4 years later haha
Can you portage wheel a kayak into the lake?
I think it would be relatively easy if you portaged into the other lake and walked it across. You might be able to drive right to the other lake even?
B&B lake! Excellent work and I appreciated the swim out to get your lure back, that's my standard attire when I jump shoot ducks on little ponds when season opens and I'm out for grouse up by Ely.
Haha appreciate it Ty! Gotta do what you gotta do lol.
Splake were on fire on the gunflint last week
Right on! Hope you caught some big ones
Hello again, Good ole pump gun. Can I ask what is your choke on the barrel of the model 12 -12ga.? … Thx much.
Of course, that gun has a full choke!
still exciting to get the bite, and enjoy the fight but thats a tough day right there lmao! good luck on the next
Exactly! Still a great day hopefully the next is better. Thanks for watching good luck to you too
Castor canadensis! 🦫
Good luck with tomorrow's opener! I'll be rooting for you while I'm at St. Luke's working.
Thanks Ty! You going to get out after work or later this weekend?
@@hoganinthewild8468 probably not until the next weekend since I'll have 6 - 12hr shifts this week. I was just out with my daughter on Thursday by McGregor area and caught a master angler channel catfish (31" 11lbs 12oz), so that was kind of my opener haha.
Well best of luck when you get out and congrats on the big cat! Thats awesome bet that put up a fight.
What do you use for bait? I just moved to mn from Cali and I love with for trout and salmon
Spawn bags, yarn, beads, worms. There are a lot of different ways people target them. I would say the most common is yarn.
What tackle did you use if you don’t mind me asking
Just a small hook and a red worm.
@@hoganinthewild8468 ty
if you dont mind what was the setup for lures u were using?
I'll try and make a video soon and dive into depth more with everything I use!
Too much talking
Can ask what was your setup? Thanks!
Of course! Running a couple foot 8lb. floro leader with a size 4 octopus hook with yarn or a soft bead.
@@hoganinthewild8468 were u using a float?
No float! Better in the slow water not the fast water runs.
Is Harper a springer?
She sure is!
@@hoganinthewild8468 I also have springers and love everything about them! I’m from across the bridge from you! Love the content boss!
They are crazy dogs! I didn't know exactly what I was getting into haha but I couldn't be happier with my little energizer bunny. You bird hunt with yours too? Should chef up a video with some wild game on your channel!
id put money on that one being a good bit over 27 if measured laying flat just from looking at it. Sick video.
Well that sounds good to me haha! Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
Are you allowed to wear felt soles in Minnesota? I sure miss wearing them in Alaska.
Yes, I think they are legal still. Alaska banned them? How was the King run last year?
@@hoganinthewild8468
We didn’t have a king season last year and we won’t have one again this year. Statewide the king runs have been terrible. Thank goodness the red, pink, and silver runs are strong. @@hoganinthewild8468
Was wondering about that... hopefully they bounce back!
Never gone after steelhead, but I would always see every Superior tributary loaded with guys/trucks when my wife and I would go up the shore for our old dating anniversary. Great work getting out though!
Appreciate it Ty. Gotta fight the crowds hah!
I don't have Pike in my area 😢 so I use musky 🙂
I'm sure that will work too!
Very cool way to get into your fishing spot by skating while towing your friend/gear! Way to put that otter sled to work! That's how I tow my daughter around out beaver trapping (minus the skating) is by packing her in the otter.
Haha thanks Ty! How was the trapline this year?
@@hoganinthewild8468 daughter and I broke my PR for heaviest beaver by 20lbs by catching a tank that weighed 70lbs. Currently at 24 beavers for the season with the Spring thaw/push out upon us.
Sounds like a great season to me! Congratulations
Looked like some tough skating with your buddy sitting in the sled! Better off buying him a pair of skates at Play it Again next time. Solid day of fishing
Agreed! It was tough skating I could only go maybe 1/4 of the way until my legs and lungs gave out and then he walked the rest of the way haha
What breed of dog is harper?
She is a springer spaniel
Good video. During the off season work on cycling you gun while it is still on your shoulder. Helps with quicker follow-up shots
Thanks! I have noticed that, it is definitely a bad habit I need to work on. Or maybe I just dust off my semi-auto and use that instead lol.
Great work on the new PB! Seems like it was well worth the hike in to get at some untouched fish.
Thanks Ty! Yes, the walk paid off. Now I have a new PB to beat haha!
That's the spirit! You're on the path now to a giant
Hogan, Nice shooting and great scenes! How do you prepare / preserve the birds for your trip back home ? I’m interested in going there to SD myself. Thx.
Thank you! You have to have the head,, one wing, or a full leg for transporting. I found just having one wing is the easiest especially for vacuum sealing which is how I usually bring the birds back. Best of luck if you go!
Hell yeah Hogan nice
Thanks man!! Have you been going after any trout this winter?? Was actually thinking about Donna lake recently because there has been less ice those fish might have been able to overwinter haha!
Great video! That first go around on the side by side comparison that sucker dodged that pike strike as if he was the Matrix.
Thanks, I appreciate it! Crazy that sucker could anticipate the northern was about to strike!
@@hoganinthewild8468 I can only imagine the fear of watching something swim up to you, with probably no knowledge of what a pike is or that it's a predator.
What breed of dog is Harper?
She is a springer spaniel
are you guys up on the Gun flint trail?
Nope, this wasn't on the Gunflint!
Strain that pickle seasoning. Nobody wants to eat that.
Haha that is a good point!
Really enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing. I drove up from Florida to Huron the week of January 3 all public land. It was brutal weather three of us shot. Only three roosters had great dogs with us too. I love the solo Hunt.
And I thought I had a long drive to chase some roosters! I always enjoy the dog work over getting a bird at the end of the day. Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
@@hoganinthewild8468 Hey bud! What are were you hunting? I was out there the last weekend and they was 6 foot snow drifts and other areas with waist deep snow.
Damnit shoe
Haha definitely bonking his next big fish with the net
Rabbits are edible but I sure as he'll woudnt rely on them for nutrition
I wouldn't either but I was pleasantly surprised with jackrabbit and would definitely eat it again!
I'm in Southern California and the jackrabbits around here look thin and sinewy.
I'm guessing it's not too common of a table fare in your area then?
I would’ve given a week’s pay to have been there in person. Great video!
I really appreciate it! Already dreaming about next season haha
Model 12?
It sure is! I love that old shotgun
Takes a lickin keeps on tickin@@hoganinthewild8468
You're damn right!
Very well done! Public land roosters are no joke, especially on the game production areas as they tend to attract as many hunters as pheasants. Curious, which general area of the state were you in? If you don't want to share, that's fine. I was thinking I may have recognized it.
Thank you very much! It was in the south central area of the state east of the river. Do you hunt down that way?
@@hoganinthewild8468 I don't, pretty much stick to the northeastern part of the state. Thanks!
Beautiful. Definitely a winter wonder land for sure! Great hunt. I don't get snow like that where I am.
I appreciate it! I was spoiled this trip with amazing scenery and cooperating birds. I think the days with the heavy fog added to the special atmosphere of the hunt too.
Getting a rooster that time of year is like getting three earlier. Nice work. I enjoyed the video
Appreciate it! Definitely had to put in some miles this trip. Always nice when the dog sleeps the whole way home though. Thanks for watching
A tasty feast! I never realized jackrabbits were so large either. I always picture them as long and lean.
A lot of meat on one! I think the one in a video was a small one too
great hunt bro, way to stick with it, Harper is a wildcat
Thanks man, I appreciate it! She sure is, currently doing zoomies around the house lol
