Добавлен 4 фев 2020
This is a channel created to encourage and inspire people living in the suburbs of Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa, to grow their own fruit and vegetables in their backyard. I would like to provide tips and information specifically for our region but that will also be applicable to most Southern Hemisphere regions. Occasionally there will be a review of products bought and how they performed after an extended period of time.

Nice, I actually have used it so far with a 5L bottle with holes in the top, will have to stop at some time as my veggie patch is expanding too, soon it will need drip method as well when it gets big.
@etiennelouw9244 yes, that is another option I saw online! Cheap and efficient 😃
Ahhh, that makes a lot of sense! I'll definitely try it this year ❤
@AGoodEnoughMom It's a game changer! Seems one has to test all these old schools of thought, sometimes they just don't work.
Hi Brigette glad to see you back.I am using grass clippings and dry leaves to keep moist. Thank you for sharing 😊
@MaggiePhigeland I should have mentioned the leaves and grass clippings, they work a treat!
Is it safe to eat after that? Thanks!
@SarasBites the dosage is so small that there shouldn't be a problem. In China, they use Borax as a food preservative....I wouldn't want to eat those foods myself, but you get the point? If you are concerned, I've read that vinegar neutralises boron. So you could spray a vinegar solution on the leaves after a couple of days.
@ thank you 😊
I'm certainly going to try that I've been disappointed and I've never seen it like this before and maybe I never noticed it maybe I'm just more aware and tuned in my thought was it must be some kind of a virus so I'm still going to try the borax solution. I love Swiss chard and b e e t greens and they're so good for you!!❤
@annefischer1433 yes they are so good! I hope this solution works for you!
Love it
WELL Done B it work and save water. 😉
@grahamdaly1314 thanks G! Just been l need the water timer now 🕰
Great, I know about a budget.
@@etiennelouw9244 oh man! Aren't we South Africans so aware of budgeting🤦🏻♀️
The water is so expensive, I'll try the drip with rain water, thanks for sharing
@PlantinginSA if one is paying so much for water, then it isn't worth trying to grow your own fruit and veg!!!!
First here 😂
@@AGoodEnoughMom 😄 story of the average South African life!
I love it!! Great job!!
@@jerrodrollins1509 thanks! I made a recent video on making compost in 18 days with a small heap. This allows one to make a huge amount of compost in a short space of time.
Holy Cow..I have just started a veg garden. So I'm looking to learn more. Just retired so hopeful of a new challenge . Unlike going fishing..
@karlvanrooyen7402 welcome to my channel! You are going to love veggie gardening!
I wish I could plant a lemon tree! Too cold in the Canadian winter
@@AeiSedai1976 could you not plant one in a large plant pot and move it indoors over winter?

Hi Bridget very nice video. New subscriber. Anthony from South Africa Western Cape. Will you be doing more videos on seed starting. ❤️🤗
@anthonytheunissen7454 Hi Anthony! Thank you for subscribing! I have got such a video lined up. I just need to edit it. Hopefully, it will be out next week.
Thank you! 😊😊😊
@AGoodEnoughMom such a pleasure!
Our soil is also slowly improving through using woodchips 😊
You cover seed trays with foil. When does the foil come off? Might be a silly question - comes from complete novice. Thanks for an informative, no fuss video.
@BrendaAmsterdam as soon as the seeds germinate, then you take the foil off. It's just to keep the moisture level constant so that the seeds don't dry out. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video! Where do you get the wood chip you used? I am in cape town too and plan to use straw to mulch the beds this year.
@@fbuys so pleased that you enjoyed my video! I get my wood chips from a local tree surgeon in PE.
Here in Cape Town we have a Mediteranean climate, wish I had some wood chips. Good job.
@etiennelouw9244 there is a guy on RUclips "The Dutch Farmer". He grows in Spain or Portugal and has a great video on how they grow in a Mediterranean climate.
Thank you for the great video. Will you show us one day how you process your mealies into mealiemeal?😊
We love white icicle radishes!
@@AGoodEnoughMom For sure!
@@AGoodEnoughMom when are you going to post a video again? Are you still on the farm?
@@sherwoodurbanfarmsouthafri8709 yes we are! Ai, I love making videos but they are very time consuming, which I'm sure you know! (although we are out of town we have a very busy road next to our property that has lots of fast, loud trucks on it - which means that the sound is really bad if I try to video a vlog-style video, so I have to record a voice over at another time) and I just can't justify spending so much time making videos if the chance of ever being monetized seems so small 😊 maybe one day again in a different season of life 😀
Thank you for the great video.
@@DigItProtea Thank you so much for watching 🤗
It's 2 years later, have you been more successful yet?
@samanthanaude5273 I got 15kg last season. But not with the Ruth Stout method. I'm trying her method again this season but covering with a top dressing of compost and 5cm wood chips.
Our coral trees are flowering here in KZN, Midlands ☺☺

By the way, your green house inspired me to make a mini green house in a transparent plastic box.

I bought peas (as well as a bunch of other seeds) from Livingseeds (Tomb Thumb) which are about 8cm high now. With every order they give you a complimentary packet of seeds and I got Sugar pod 2 peas. I'm so excited to try plant them now after seeing yours. I hope I'm not too late. I'm in East London
Lovely, well done

I found this very inspiring to start my own pile. Thanks for the information. I have a small red wiggler worm bin and it is very addictive lol now I want to do it at a bigger scale like yours lol
@@elvisbesewing thanks so much for watching! I hope you are able to make many successful compost piles!🪱
I keep following quick composting but no matter what materials i use it does not break down,I cannot generate heat.
@@annetteorielley833 are you in SA? I noticed that my compost has slowed down dramatically now that the real winter has hit. Something that would be completely broken down in 1 day is still there after 4 days🤔. Are you able to put any kind of animal manure in your heap? That acts as an activator I'm told however I found that enough grass clippings will bring do the job just as well. One can buy a compost activator at the garden centre but I've never bothered. Some folk recommend you task the male members of the household to water 😜 the heap a couple of times...First thing in morning is apparently most beneficial 😄
I’d say it’s too dry, way too dry. More water and you get better compost faster.
@@cherylhowker1792 thanks for the tip👍🏻
@@sherwoodurbanfarmsouthafri8709 hope it helps.
You need to wrap the leaves over the head to keep it white, but I love the colour 😍
@@desireecuffe7052 Ahhh! Right I've seen folk do that online. I thought that was to keep it from going brown.🤔

Wow its rewarding to watch a healthy harvest. You've got every good reason to be excited about the cauliflower and your garden is bountiful and fresh. well done, your channel is growing organically. If I remember you started your channel around the sametime as mine but your effort shows in the numbers. when I subscribed you had less than 100 subs, by end of this winter you'll hit 1k that's for sure. congratulations and keep going

I'm in East London. Our climates are similar I didn't think blueberries could grow here but if they grow in PE then surely they could grow here too? Cape gooseberries grow like weeds in my garden too
I think they should grow even better in your area! There used to be growers called Amatola Berries in that region.
