Anniversary Bay (featuring Lee Archer Cave and Wet Cave).
During a brief window of calm in the midst of some wild weather, Dad and I visit the Rocky Cape National Park / Tangdimmaa to see Anniversary Bay and the nearby caves. Being my old childhood stomping ground, I am very fond of this area and always look forward to wandering around the hills of this somewhat overlooked national park in Tasmania's North West Coast.
The walk we did in this video starts at the end of Irby Boulevard, just before the wharf. Once you find the track, it's sign posted fairly clearly. The walk to Anniversary Bay first takes you up a fairly steep section before a pleasant stroll through Banksia Grove, so called because of all the native banksia trees, and then down to...

Tamar Island

Dawn till dusk at the Tamar Island Wetlands on a particularly cold winter's day. The Tamar Island Wetlands walk is located on the West Tamar Highway about 20 minutes from Launceston's CBD. The walk out to the island is flat, wheelchair-friendly and will take around 30 minutes each way. There are toilets and a BBQ on the island, making it a great place for families and is also popular with jogge...
The Balfour Track

A wintery walk through the Tarkine rain forest in NW Tasmania. On this trip we did the Tarkine Drive which is a loop road (C218) starting near Edith Creek. Trowutta Arch is quite other-worldly and well worth a visit. The walk takes around 15 minutes each way and is pretty easy. Other highlights are the Milkshake Hills walk, Beckett Falls (currently closed in 2024) and Sumac Lookout. The entire ...

Philosopher Falls
Просмотров 3566 месяцев назад
A day of waterfall sight-seeing and fungi hunting in the Waratah region, NW Tasmania. Philosopher Falls is named after James "Philosopher" Smith who is credited with discovering tin at Waratah which led to the beginning of Tasmania's mining boom. It is located a few kilometers west of Waratah. The track is well maintained, clearly marked and takes around 30-45 minutes each way. Despite a steep ...
The Tarkine Coast

A great couple of days spent on the Tarkine / takanya coastline in North West Tasmania exploring the wild splendour that the area offers. On day 1 we visited Arthur River, Lady Kathleen Beach and Couta Rocks, camping the night at Camp Elsewhere at Temma. There are a number of campsites in the area which come with a small fee ($6 for where we stayed) that can be paid at the Parks and Wildlife of...
Mount Arthur

An early Autumn walk to the summit of Mt Arthur in NE Tasmania. Mt Arthur (1,188m) is located near Lilydale, about 30 minutes north of Launceston. On this occasion I went with my brother-in-law Harry and his son Otto who, for a treat on his 10th birthday, was given the day off school to come mountain climbing. I had done this walk about twenty years ago and thought I had a rough idea of what to...
Ringtail Falls Circuit (featuring Waratah)

A day out in the unique Tasmanian town of Waratah. Now with a population of around 250 people, Waratah was once the central hub for the nearby Mt Bischoff tin mine which was at one point the richest tin mine in the Southern Hemisphere and evidence of that mining history still abounds throughout the town. Apart from that, it's just an interesting place to visit with Waratah Falls in the middle o...
The Sphinx Bluff Track

A steep climb in the summer heat to the South Eastern section of the Ben Lomond National Park. The Sphinx Bluff Track (also known as the Bent Bluff track) is found on Rossarden Road about half a kilometer past Craggy Peaks cabins. The first section is on an old 4WD track which eventually narrows into a bush track. The track is relatively easy to navigate with plenty of ribbons and cairns showin...
Mother Cummings Head (via Cummings Cliff Track)
Просмотров 59910 месяцев назад
A fantastic day walking to the summit of Mother Cummings Head via a little-known short cut. The Cummings Cliff Track is accessed from Scotts Road (turn off from Meander Falls Road - you will need a 4WD vehicle). The tracks starts where the road ends, a little way past the lookout. We weren't sure what to expect with this track as there was very little information and it doesn't seem to be that ...
The Kelly Basin Track (featuring Queenstown and Nelson Falls)

A lovely (if not a bit wet and cold) couple of days spent in Tassie's rugged West Coast. The Kelly Basin track (also known at the Bird River track) is accessed by following Mt Jukes Road from Queenstown and then turning off onto Kelly Basin Road. The last 5km is very narrow and not reccomended for 2WD drive cars. From the carpark at Bird River Bridge, it's a roughly 7km walk to the site of Pill...
The Castra Circuit

A great day out in Nietta, Northern Tasmania, at the Castra Circuit. One of Tasmania's lesser known short walks, the Castra Circuit is found on Gaunts Road, Nietta. It is a 3km circuit (not 4 as I incorrectly said in the video) that features a number of waterfalls and some very impressive native forest. There's no car park, just pull over onto the side of the road when you see a sign. Starting ...

A walk in Winter to the summit of the Rocky Cape hills. Rocky Cape National Park is located on the NW Coast of Tasmania. It has a rich Aboriginal heritage and features stunning scenery and a wide diversity of native flora. This walk is from the Rocky Cape Lighthouse to Tinkers Lookout (291m). The walk from the start of the track took me 90 minutes although a fair bit of that was spent fiddling ...
Halls Falls (via Mt Paris Dam)

A day trip with my wife to Halls Falls in NE Tasmania. The Halls Falls track is located on Anchor Road at Pyengana. It takes around 30 minutes each way with the trail going through some very nice rain forest before a short, steep traverse down to the base. While not quite matching the spectacle of the nearby and more popular St Columba Falls, they are very photogenic and chances are you will ha...
Garners Creek

A wet, cold winter's day at Garners Creek, Preolenna in NW Tasmania. Our plan was to visit Garners Creek Falls and a nearby unnamed waterfall on private property. After scrambling around in the bush we realised we were closer to the unnamed falls and we didn't know exactly where Garners Creek Falls were so that's what we ended up visiting. Without a proper track it was fairly hard going and aft...
Great effort fellas 👍👍
Lovely! Captures the peace and serenity really well. *Adds The Nut to bucket list*
Thanks! Yes Stanley is definitely worth a visit.
I did this walk yesterday....you didn't see the other side of stone hut cave mate it has another bed and a ladder going up into a small cave....I'll be posting it soon so stay tuned! Great walk though I didn't have time to go further on as I was visiting himtsmens hideaway and clearing out some trash left behind at the hut.....
Yeah right, I figured there was a bit more to see up there. We were mainly focused on getting to the falls so we weren't expecting all those unusual rock overhangs. I wouldn't mind going back up there for another look some time, it's a magic spot. Bit of a hike getting up there though!
@@richardhawley8041 yeah she was a bit steep lol 😂 they have blocked off the road so you can't drive up any closer to the start of the track so I walked from the quarry up to stone hut itself then walked back......
Absolutely stunning 😮
Meriaer??
Great video! Love this place.
Thanks, yes it's a true gem.
Brendan Lichtendonk knows all about the gorilla of pig island… ask him about it one day
Intriguing
That turbo chook scene was classic and also the duck pecking the swan on the but lol classic mate funny as 😅😅😅
Looks cold 🥶
I clicked expecting a new Richard Hawley single....wow, he's gone jazz I thought! Good for him. Loved this creative effort - sub'd. Just home to NZ today from 3 weeks in cold dreary Melbourne! cheers
Lol yeah not the first time I've been mistaken for the "other" Richard Hawley. Thanks for watching.
Lovely to see. Connection's with the youngins wonderful
Good video mate , well filmed and edited, cheers
Thanks very much
Lovely memories to have with your dad. Thanks for taking us along.
Fantastic video. The views are awesome. Thanks for sharing. subd & 👍26
Thanks. Much appreciated
I’m a big fan of your videos and wondered when you’d get to do The Balfour Track. Too bad you didn’t see much fungi. We made a special trip in April to do the walk. All the way from Sydney just to see the fungi.
Thanks Chris. Apparently it's renowned for being a fungi hot spot. Out of interest, was there a lot there when you visited?
@@richardhawley8041, compared to what we see up here yes there was a lot of fungi, although there did seem a lot more when we visited last year.
Nice. At 43sec: do you know if they are a chanterelle?
I’m not sure sorry. I’m not much of an expert when it comes to identifying fungi, I just like filming them.
Excellent video. Cheers
Thank you
Great video..great photography..loved the ending 😅
Thanks. Much appreciated
As one of the Tasmanian diaspora, I really enjoyed your video. Too funny about losing the track though!!
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it
@@richardhawley8041 Keep it up - I've subscribed!
Nice video mate....keep up the west coast videos loving them have not been up that way yet,
Thanks. Yeah it’s a nice part of the world that tends to get overlooked. Probably the locals like it that way I suspect but I’m always keen to promote the area.
@@richardhawley8041 yeah just don't share some secret spots locals tend to winge about it just keep the good spots to yaself....keep up the good work 👍
Another wonderful part of Tassie that I have not yet experienced! I'm keen to follow the track all the way to the coast.
Little did the cameraman know, there's a fedora hidden in the foliage.
Agent P
Very cool
Unreal… quite surprised to see one at Notley Fern!!
Cute!
I know right? Wasn't expecting to see a platypus down there. He was only a few metres away.
Nice video mate....this is where the tourist went missing last year....still hasn't been found either....hope she's found soon...for.the family anyway.....😢
Thanks. Yeah they had signs up at the start of the track for people to keep an eye out. Sad for her family.
@@richardhawley8041 I'm keen to go out there and have a look, but I honestly think someone has snatched her....like that poor young girl from Launceston who got kidnapped etc
Wow amazing 🙌🏼
Fun guy season?!? Sounds like it’s your time to shine!!
Hi Richard. I met you at Philosopher Falls today 4/5/24. The name I was trying to think of is Louise Fairfax.
Hello Robyn, it was nice to meet you yesterday. Yes I’ve been to Louise’s web page before when researching a certain waterfall (which I still haven’t found). The Philosopher Falls video will be out in a week or so.
Such a beautiful part of the world. Thank you for sharing this.
Your pillinger information is not quite right.
How so?
Thank you Richard. Loving your latest video. Beautiful. Plus your Dad's photos are amazing! Stunning scenery. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks Merilyn. We were lucky to get good lighting conditions which helps but with all the colours and interesting rocks, it’s hard to take a bad shot!
Stunning scenery.
Quit your job. Hit the road. Vlog.
Love it. Richard Attenborough x Russell Coight x Townes Van Sant.
Wtf. DAVID Atteborough!

I really enjoyed your video - lots of wonderful views!
Excellent video mate....I have so many spots to see up there including huts, just said to my wife we have to go up for a good week or so Awesome spot 😀
Thanks for that. It _is_ an awesome spot, I’m already thinking about a second trip later in the year.
@@richardhawley8041 if I'm available I'll meet you there for a beer 🍻 maybe a colab video 👍

A perfect video! And the climb is now going on my to-do list, Many Thanks for posting,
Well thanks, that's very kind. Hope you enjoy the climb.
Ha! I have that same shirt! “Stay positive”. As always, great video mate!
Thanks Toby. 👍
Beautiful video. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you.
beautiful video 🤩❤
Fabulous, very well done by some one who knows how to use a camera 👀👌
Thank you kindly
I really want to do this walk while I'm here....is it an absolute you need a 4x4 to get to the start?
I wouldn't risk taking a 2WD vehicle in there. In theory it would be possible but some parts of the road are boggy and if you get stuck you'll be a long way from anywhere with no phone reception and it's not a place that you'll be likely to meet anyone else.
amazing views as always, Tassie never disappoints. Looks like a toughest hike, but well worth it ✌🏻
Thanks, yeah it was nice up there. Could've done without all the spiders over the track and the heat though.
Amazingly place and very good video!
Thank you. Yes it’s a pretty special part of the world
Production budget must have increased, we even have wardrobe changes now. Keep up the good work boys.👍🏽
Haha yep well spotted
Also crediting Andrew the bagpiper at Queenstown for his music.
Thanks 👍
Good job, so many great places to see in Tassie, really need to get back down there. Nicely done. Good luck with your channel, I know how much work you have to put in the get these out, subscribed ✌🏻
Thanks for that, much appreciated. Hope to see you in Tassie sometime soon.
