Can the Honda Ridgeline be used for Hunting & Fishing Trips?
The Honda Ridgeline is more than just a daily driver. I put my truck to the test on numerous hunting, fishing, and camping trips to prove that this truck is capable of anything. In this video I explain how my truck has performed in conditions a person on an outdoors adventure may encounter. Enjoy the video!

Honda Ridgeline Full Review (After owning it for over 1 year)

I have truly put my truck to the test with numerous road trips, driving in different weather conditions, and of course I used it as my daily driver. Here is my review of the Honda Ridgeline after owning it for over a year and putting on over 40,000 miles!

Why I Traded My FULL SIZE TRUCK For a HONDA RIDGELINE
Просмотров 6 тыс.10 месяцев назад
What is the right size of truck for you? Is it the smaller midsized, or is it the full size truck? Watch the video to hear my thoughts about both!
My '06 Ridgeline is turning 174,000 miles this week, so am considering a new or newer model Ridgeline. After watching this video and learning about all of the deeply flawed electronics in this truck, it's definitely OFF the list.
Miko is just chill like you ha. I’ve had my 24 Maverick Lariat hybrid for a couple months now and I love it. Great to whip around and navigate traffic and tight spots. You can get a little Wireless CarPlay adapter for like $50 but then again the wireless charger sucks? The Mav charges great. Great light duty trucks for sure, but the quirky electronics is really surprising. My Mav AAC and land keep work really great for the most part. Thanks for the real life honest review. Take care you and Miko! 🏁
Haha he sure is! I almost got a maverick! Does your truck seem small to you on the inside at all? I’ve never been in one but have been curious. Thanks for the comment🙂
I’ve been looking at this truck. It would be perfect for my golden retriever and I. How tall are you and how comfortable is it?
I am 6’2”, it’s actually very comfortable, both in the drivers seat and passengers. I don’t spend much time in the back, but on the road trip I did, I have no complaints. Thanks for the comment!
Buys yourself a $80 wireless CarPlay dongle. It’s great to have wireless CarPlay.
I actually have one, when I use it the screen likes to freeze 😕
I heard if you don’t disable the automatic start, you can have more carbon buildup on your engine? Causing a rebuild of the engine a lot earlier than expected. Something to do with the direct injectors.
Thank you for the comment! Oh wow, I was not aware of that. I’m going to have to do some research on it, because that doesn’t sound good!
I have the 2017 black edition and I don't have the problem as you while using cruise control. Mine works fairly well for the most part and it doesn't sense the cars beside me. Once in awhile if the car in front of me is driving super slow, it doesn't slow down soon enough and ends up doing a harder brake but I'll just turn it off or switch lane to get around that car. It seems like your calibration could be off if it is sensing the car to your side. Maybe a calibration would fix that problem for you?
Thank you for the comment! I’ve had a few comments saying that theirs works fairly well and that mine might just need to be calibrated. I’m going to have to make an appointment and get that fixed. Thanks for the help!
Hey man! I really enjoyed the video and will probably go with a 2023 Ridgeline. Please take a word of advice for safety... blur the map on the navigation system. 👍
I’m glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the comment! That’s very good advice, I appreciate it 🙂
I get 11.7mpg in city and 20 on hwy. What mpg are you getting?
I’m normally do city and highway daily, averaging 22-23 combined. Thanks for the comment!
Hi handsome couple. Keep showing your dog. I would like to see more videos with your beautiful dog. Buy your dog some digital crypto. He's going to need it. Godblese both of you.
I can do that!
My only problem I have about the Ridgeline is that I can’t afford one.
They are rather expensive, I wish they’d get cheaper 😕
What tires were you running in these video clips?
These are the stock tires that come with the black edition, I can’t recall off the top of my head what they are, but I will check and get back to you. Thanks!
Thank you! This was the best review for the Ridgeline I've seen and I've watched about 20+ reviews on the truck. So thank you! You really helped me learn some things about the truck that no one else mentioned!
I’m happy to hear that and thank you for the comment! Let me know if there are any further questions I can answer 🙂
Thanks for keeping Buddy in the video, makes the truck, more likable, since he likes it.
Of course! He is attached to my hip 🙂 thank you for the comment!
It’s not sport mode, it’s sequential mode, it’s for your gay paddles, it will auto shift when you over rev
Lets hope honda figured out the horrible reliability of the fuel injector.....xd
I hope so too!
Thanks for the great review. I get tired of some of the reviews of the Ridgeline that are almost 100% favorable. There is no ride that is 100%. But I love mine! A 2023 RTL, so not all the options of the Black. I will say that I love the great majority of it, but here are my complaints (and none of these would make me change my mind if I were to buy another). 1.Don't like the pushbutton PRND selector. 2.Also don't like the automatic brakes, lane assist, and ACC cruise control so I turn them off. 3.It doesn't have a digital compass! (Unless you get the Honda mapping program included with the top 2 of 4 levels.) 4. Oil filter that is a pain to change. You won't regret buying this truck!
I appreciate the comment, And that is more than true, no vehicle is perfect!
I also going from Chevy 1500 to midsize truck too.
I hope you enjoy the change 🙂
12:52 There's a Service Bulletin for the wireless charging that some people reported fixed this. Service Bulletin # 24-061.
Regarding the bed lights. The assumption is when you swing out the tailgate, you're accessing the trunk which being deeper in a dark scenario needs more light. If just pulling stuff out of the bed it's not as useful. There is a cargo light button you can use to the left of the steering wheel if you need to turn it on manually.
That completely makes sense, thank you for the explanation!
This makes no sense whatsoever. There should be a light in the bed AND in the trunk when it lifts up. I installed a rechargeable strip light that attaches to the underside of the trunk.
Man, really nice, realistic review. Someone hit me in my tundra recently, totalling it, and I live in the city but need light duty truck utility and i think this is the route I'll be going. Appreciate the review
I Appreciate the comment, I’d give the Ridgeline a look! Have a good one 🙂
I own a 22 RTL-E HPD, and live in Seattle. Some info from a guy who's owned his for 3 years: 1) I put Dry-Z-Air in the trunk because it can get musty. Humidity in Seattle is 100% 7 months out of 12. 2) If you are a MTB'er like me, the swing-out tailgate is great for installing a tail-gate protector. I put it on like putting a saddle blanket on a horse. 3) A 4'x5' rubber matt from Home Depot fits perfectly between the fender bumps. Protects your bed and keeps stuff from sliding around. 4) Apple car play issues are related to your cable or port in your phone, not the Ridge, and are universal among brands vehicle brands. But the charge pad does suck. 5) The third prong on a plug is for the ground. No ground in a truck. I just cut ground prong off one of my extension cords and leave it in the truck. 6) Buy an "Idle-stopper" to not have to cancel the idle-stop manually. Idle-stop will decrease the life of the truck, and the starter is very expensive. 7) You need to take your truck into the dealer and get your lane-keeping assist and collision sensing system adjusted - mine works much better than you describe. 8) Put trans in sport if you find yourself in stop-n-go traffic. Why? The Ridge has a 9-sp trans, but it doesn't use 1st gear in Drive. The first gear is very low - almost a granny-gear. By putting it in S, you can creep along much slower and not have to ride the brake. 9) Off road: The Ridge does not have a transfer case and the accompanying low-range for creeping up and down steep inclines. Once again, use Sport, but also the paddle shifters. This will hold the gear that it's in, and you'll find that while not as low as the low-range 1st in a 4WD rig, 1st is a very short gear, and works pretty good for helping with decent control at idle. 10) Yep. Not a tough guy truck. It's a super useful, super competent and great handling truck for adults who give zero F's what anyone else thinks about their truck. And it's my favorite truck I have ever owned, and I've owned them all.
I appreciate all the tips! I will put them to good use 🙂
Well said. Just bought a 2025 black edition in sonic gray pearl. Love it!
Ditto, just leased a 24 RTL, the wireless charger does suck, so does the idle stop thing, I need to research where I can get something to bypass that, the salesman said it was a government requirement, yeah right. Other than that I like it, fits my needs perfectly
🎉😅🎉m🎉
22 HPD black edition sonic gray here! Best midsize truck in the market
Purchasing a 2025 today. You explained a lot of the bells and whistles better than others. Thanks.
Thank you for the comment! I hope you enjoy your new truck 🙂
Bought a 2024 on Dec 23, 2024. Got my first request to borrow it on Dec 29th. Selling it this week.
BTW, we moved plywood.
Haha funny how many friends you have when you have a truck huh?😂
I love my Ridgeline it’s actually the perfect truck for most people they just don’t want to admit it
I agree with you, it can do most of what any person needs
So this is probably the most 💩 talked about Truck on the road, Funny thing is most never even drove one, Or even tryed, Absolutely a Great ride, How would I know? It's my wife's daily and She Absolutely loves Her 2020 Black Edition.😁
Make sure to drain and fill your 9 speed ZF if it's a 2020 or newer to maintain those smooth shifts, I noticed a difference with Ours at about 38,000 miles.
It is for sure! The glorified grocery getter 😂 and I agree most have never been inside the truck to make any fair opinions. I’m glad she likes her truck, and thanks for the tip!
Your dog is adorable. Love him
Thank you 😊
Squeeling tires makes you look stupid…Ridgeline pulls my 21’ranger walley boat in the mountains of AZ no problem at all…it handles like a sports car if you know how to drive like that…huge adrenaline rush it is better than me…rotates like a race car …red lines at 7k this Vtech loves to sing…all wheel drive torque vectoring is nuts…off roading is for ATV and Dirt Bikes…taking a pick up off road nowadays is a bad joke every time…rides like a cadillac with plenty of cab room…not many vehicles safer than a Ridgeline…snow driving is better than anything I have ever owned and I have had them all…the pick up bed is revolutionary in design…no other truck even remotely compares…if I could find a better package in a truck I’d buy it…I’m on my 3rd Ridgeline and counting…come on Porsche step up already 😊
Thank you for the comment! I’m happy to hear you’ve been loving the Ridgeline 🙂
I consider my 2013 civic as a truck
It’s pretty close!
Good review! Weird that automatic braking sometimes brakes with oncoming traffic. Is there any fix other than turning off?
Thanks for the comment! I’ve had people commenting that it might be a calibrating issue, so I am going to do some looking into that. I would like it to work so I’ll get to the bottom of it 🙂
On your Carplay cabling issue.... you are experiencing a situation where the cable isn't suitable for data transmission, but it's capable enough for charging. Not all cables are created equal, so Apple has an "MFi" certification that they will bestow upon aftermarket cables to signify they meet the needed spec for reliable data transmission. Also, note that you need a relatively short cord - it shouldn't be more than 2-3' in length. Also, some of your complaints about the lane keeping assist and automated braking suggest that your camera isn't properly calibrated -OR- you've replaced the windshield with an aftermarket windshield, which is known to cause calibration issues.
I appreciate all the info! I will check into getting a new cable, I can’t recall where I got my current one or what brand it is. I will also ask to have the camera recalibrated next time the truck is in the shop. Thanks for the help🙂
I find it hard to believe that this truck isn't bluetooth capable. Should be capable with syncing with apple or android. Am I wrong?
Sorry I wasn’t clear with that, it is Bluetooth capable, you can play music using Bluetooth but you are not able to use Apple carplay via bluetooth. Thanks for the comment!
@@HondaRidgeline110 Sorry bro, I use Android, and I don't know anything about Apple car play.
I ran my headlight down 2" and no more issues, also switch to traditional cruise
I’ll have to give that a try, I appreciate it!
My 2019 sport is the best truck I have owned over 40 years. Don't care for the VCM and feel it kicking in at highway speeds on cruise control only. I can live with it. The engine shut down at idle with the newer Ridgelines is the problem I see, push that button to disable and push button transmission. I Like my shift nob and no button to push! It Tows my GeoPro 19' RV trailer 4000lb loaded pretty easy. The key and most important thing with the 3.5 engine is to keep up on the maintenance. Oil changes, transfer and rear differental oil change which I do myself, plus Transmission oil which I change every 20,000-25,000 miles. The 6 Speed appears to be holding up well at this point with 55,000 miles. So I think as with most honda's, Maintenance is key.
Thank you for the comment! And I am happy to hear you are enjoying your truck and it has been working well for you. I haven’t towed anything with that much weight so I’m glad to hear the truck performed. Have a good day 🙂
Buy the VCM deactivator which prevents the deactivation from working.
Good overview. You should consider getting your safety system calibrated, it works great on mine so I bet something is a bit off on your Ridgeline.
That’s a great idea! I’ll ask them about it next time I’m getting an oil change. Thanks for the comment!
Great job! I’m looking at the 2025 and wonder how previous models fair out. Love the big pooch! Seems like you like it. Thanks!
I appreciate the comment! I haven’t had any issues with mine so far, so hopefully that continues 🙂
Great review I just switched from 2007 ridgeline to 2013 and I'm loving it so far! Feels like driving a nice car. I tow a 1000lb jet ski behind with fishing gear in back so it seems like the best option for me!
That sounds like a perfect setup!
I meant switched to a 2023
Well done sir.....
I appreciate it!
Nice vid Come to chick fil a tomorrow at dodge and I got you with some free eats
Thank you I appreciate it! And haha you got a deal!😂
OMAHA❤
Omaha is a little chilly right now 🥶
Smart move filming this in that one stall garage. Pretty sure your old truck wouldn't have fit in there, if it did could you even open a door wide enough to get in and out? I've been thinking of getting a Ridgeline for the past year, watched tons of videos. Your video is probably going to push me the rest of the way to pulling the trigger on buying one. Thanks for the information!
Thank you for your comment! And I bet you’re right, my old truck wouldn’t have fit in there. I’m glad I could help with your decision, take care!
Awesome update and review! Did you ever change the floor mats? Wonder if you'd like to review our all-weather floor mats and the bed mat?
Thank you I appreciate it! I actually did get new floor mats right away, but in the rear seat area they are curled already so not thrilled with them. I could feature them in some of my videos but I don’t think I would do a video specifically to review them. Thank you!
@@HondaRidgeline110 No problem, I'll appreciate it if you'll share the honest feedback with your own style and make the video. Excited to work together and hope our floor mat will satisfy you. Btw, I can not comment our contact here successfully under the policy, could I get your email and discuss about details?
Thank you for the reply, my email is colejerie@gmail.com
Nice to have a previous "Full size truck owner" being upfront on the pluses of the Ridgeline. Love mine, 2021. Just two notes of interest on systems in the truck. First, the switch left off the steering wheel that was referred to as the intermittent wiper control is actually the heat for the heating liner in the windshield where the wipers rest in the park position, to keep them free of ice when needed. Second, on the lights inside the cargo bed. They will come on when the tailgate is dropped down "If" the Bed Light switch left of the steering wheel is turned on. (Even when the truck is turned off). If the lights are left on they will turn off automatically after 30 minutes. Nice follow up review.
Thank you for the info! Actually very helpful, I had no idea on the wipers so that is really neat to know. And also thank you for the tip on the cargo lights, that was driving me nuts! I appreciate your comment, take care🙂
I don’t own one but these are underrated trucks, super reliable.
I agree with you!
I have a 2019 Honda Ridgeline RTL. I used to own a 2002 Dodge Dakota with a V8 engine. I can say from experience, that the V8 was great for power, but not acceleration. The V6 on my Ridgeline accelerates quite fast! Maybe the newer Ridgeline does not? Maybe the Silverado accelerated faster? I am not sure, but I really like the smooth drive of the Ridgeline! It is a very comfortable truck, and I love the swing out tailgate and in-bed trunk! However, if I needed it for heavy towing or high off-road ground clearance, I would not recommend the Ridgeline. That said, I have never towed, but have driven it on dirt back roads and mud. The AWD works great! And in the snow too!
Thank you for the comment! It’s pretty decent on acceleration in my opinion, still not going to drag race mine though 🙂 I’m excited to get mine back in the snow this winter, I missed last winter as I was in AZ for it but it handled the snow great the first year. Over loving the truck, thanks for the comment!
Thank you for the great personal review of the Ridgeline! I have the Ridgeline as the #1 on my list of choices for my first pickup.
You are welcome and thank you for your comment! I think you have chosen a great truck as your first 🙂
Fellow Ridgeline owner 20 RTL-E. Love mine and looking forward to seeing a redesign similar to the 26 Passport. You did a great review and having the dog costar is awesome.
I’m looking forward to it as well! Thank you very much, I appreciate it!
Could I get your car page on IG?
I actually don’t have an Instagram associated with this RUclips, just a hunting, fishing, camping one 🙂
With CarPlay, it will not connect if your phone is locked, but it will charge as you mention. Just unlock your phone and it should connect. (It took me a while to learn this too)
I wasn’t aware of that, thank you for the info!
Nice review, I'm picking mine up this week or next. BTW..you need to fix your soffit!
I bet you are excited, I hope you like it! The house is actually a rental 🙂
@HondaRidgeline110 hahaha.. yes, I figured, considering you have Florida plates on the truck! Yes, very excited.
The tailgate opening to the side fails after a while in northern conditions.
Oh really?? I have not heard that yet, what does it end up acting like when it fails? Thanks for the heads up and the comment!
@@HondaRidgeline110the tailgate will still drop down but the mechanism for side opening gets corroded from the salt on the roads. I’ve lubed it several times and freed it up but just to have it fail again. Not a deal breaker as my wife still wants a new Ridgeline, just something to be aware of.
I appreciate the info, I’m in Nebraska currently and visit my family back home in MN frequently… I hope I don’t experience that!
@@HondaRidgeline110make a habit of spraying it with a good lubricant during the winter months.
