Downwind SUP Foiling on Loch Ness
This was day two our downwind SUP foil trip to Loch Ness Scotland. The Loch is a good spot for learning due to the uniform wind blow bumps, easy access and relatively narrow width (meaning it’s not too far to paddle to the edge).

SIC Raptor Air Inflatable Wingfoil Board

The SiC Raptor is a fantastic board for travel or for people with limited storage space. With its carbon plate (for more connected to the foil feel), footstrap inserts and profiled tail (to improve water release) it doesnt compromise too much on performance either. Check out this overview video of this great wingfoil board. Reach out if you have questions or simply order online here: www.azurew...

Cool. What wing size would you recommend for a slim soon 11yo, absolute beginner, 140cm/4.6feet tall?
your RUclips channel and your video making is very good. Your content ideas are very good.
your RUclips channel and your video making is very good. Your content ideas are very good.
I'm sure you've figured it out by now, but for others on the same journey: You need more height above the water... your gravitational potential energy is a massive driver of that first pump. Starting at the water level is a disadvantage already! Get the platform higher, get on the board crouching with the nose down, and drive that first pump to convert your potential energy to kinetic energy and get the foil flying.... The nose must be down on every pump, and up for every "catch" or "reset" to gain mast height again before nose down for the pump again...
thanks for the tips! yes I've cracked it now and the best move I made was using an A Frame ladder so I started much higher from the water
Using the 75or82?
Both on 75cm mast
Is it a DIY board?
Yes it is. I’m using an Axis tray board now though
@@azurewatersports320 can you share some insights on how you did it? I'd like to try some diy before I commit to an expensive purchase
Hi, I was wondering what size front foil you've been using with this. I have the 7'6 version of the board and was looking at buying a 1534 cm2 front foil (I'm about 68 kg). Just wanted to make sure that foil would have enough lift, so to speak.
Hello. I think the F-one gravity 1800 foil would be a good foil to get. That’s what I teach on and also my 11 year old son has been using that in lighter wind. I’d be happy to prepare you a quote for a gravity foil if that’s of interest. Just reach out admin@azurewatersports.co.uk
He is doing well. Foiling is not easy. Can I ask how many hours in water b4 this clip. I m thinking to get my son 8 yr old into foiling soon
Why he need a helmet in the water? What an idiot!!!!!
Good work
Nice, check a start with a stepladder : ruclips.net/video/AC0yMzY6Qls/видео.html
Dock starts are not easy!
Awesome 😎💪💪💪💪💪💪
Awesome job!!!
I saw you had the f-one gravity 2200 and 1800 in another video, which set up was best for you? I was thinking of getting one, but now you've got the axis 1150. how's does it compare?
Hello, thanks for the video! Would you recommend this 7’11 board for beginners wingfoiling in choppy/gusty ocean or something wider/shorter? Like 7’2/34? Rider weigh is 110kg, 1.98m tall. Background is very little experience windsurfing with 230 liters +80 cm wide board and frequent paddler with 330 liter SUP 34 inch wide. I would like to keep the versatility of the 7’11 as SUP/WINDFOIL/WINDSURF options IF it doesn’t make wingfoil learning curve harder. Eventually I will probably get 140 liters wingboard. Thanks!
Strong work. I'm about two days in trying to do the same on a lake.
Thanks! I’ve improved a bit since this video but still haven’t mastered it properly! I’m on session no. 15 i think. But it’s great fun!
nice job! Which front foil are you using? I see you also added an attachment to the front of your ladder but did not use it!
Is it the HPS 1050?
Thanks! I am using the Axis 1150 and my mate (who’s better than me at dock starting) is using a Gong foil. He has just bought a 1150 too now though! Yes I made that attachment on the front and that was the first day trying it. Unfortunately it is too low so there wasnt enough mast height to get going before the board hit the water. I’m in the process of upgrading it!
Hey man. What are the reasons why someone would prefer riding without windows?
Hey! It’s a personal preference thing. Where I ride there are very few other water users. A wing without windows can pack down smaller, is less delicate when packing and lighter. I also use an Ozone wasp v2 and I find the windows arent that useful anyway since they are harder to see through when they are wet (water droplets) and since they are small you have to move the wing to see through them anyway. Without windows you just have to lift the wing briefly when going downwind to check its clear, no big deal.
Which foil did you use?
Hello. He was using the F-one Phantom 1780.
Thanks for sharing this video!
You’re welcome, thanks for the feedback. It’s a great wing, I was out on it again today.
And which one is better?
I go through phases of liking one vs the other. They are both great wings. The Strike is very light weight, flags out really well but has a larger wingspan compared to the Wasp so easier to catch the wing tips. I like the extra handles on the Wasp (in particular the back handle) as I can adjust the power in the wing. That being said I tend to use the end handle most of the time anyway. The Wasp has a waist leash which is excellent for paddling out through waves, whereas the Strike has a very short wrist leash (but of course you can change it out). The Strike has a one pump system which makes getting on the water faster. Also if you like windows the Wasp has them whereas the Strike doesn't. My recommendation is to try them both and see which you like!
@@azurewatersports320 thanks for the feedback! I have the waspv2 on 6m and 4m, but never tryed the strike. Planning to buy a 5m and was thinking about the strike for wave foiling. On wasp I use a lot the midle handle (first back handle) when i jibe out of wave and use only one hand for some seconds until i can leave my other hand from the flag handle and grab the front handle. This is very usefull and I am afraid i will miss it on strike. I need find one for test. 🤙
@@danuco_foil yes Testing is the best option. We have a 5m on test if you are near to Aberdeen Scotland! Also the V2 has just been released and it has a smaller wing span amongst other improvements. See here on my website for a bit more info www.azurewatersports.co.uk/blogs/news. Cheers
great idea!
I'm really curious to see someone attach a windsurfing mast to one of these.
Why?
I use it like wing surf (without foil) coz I dont really like foiling and have no conditions for that, and I is really cool. I think with windsurf mast it should be even more fast, so why not?
Thanks for the video. How would you choose the size of the board for mainly wing surfing but also eventually SUP if no wind? Thanks
The 7’2 and 7’11 are the multiuse boards. The 7’2 is designed mainly for winging as it is very wide. To choose between the 7’11 and 7’6 for SUP it will depend on your weight and what you want to do with it. It you’re above 70kg and want an all-round SUP board i’d recommend the 7’11 due to its extra volume (185L) compared to the 7’2 (168L).
How have you been liking the 980 after more time with it, especially in comparison to the Phantom 1480? I'm thinking of the 980 as I move on from my beginner setup.
Yes I still like it a lot. I’m now experimenting with different stabilisers on it. The 980 feels fast and has a good amount of glide. The Phantom 1480 turns a bit more easily but the glide isnt as good and its not as quick. I can get going in lighter winds on the 980 compared to the 1480. But both are good foils and do different things well. The 980 is a high aspect foil whereas the phantom is more mid to high aspect.
@@azurewatersports320 Awesome. Thanks for the helpful comparison!
Wind strenght?
It was around 15 knots. I was using a 1300 PNG axis front wing. The wind picked up later on and I changed to the 980 HPS wing.
How can you use for windsurfing? Where to you insert the mast?
It has a deck plate mount in the middle of the board, I show it in the video. Its not an adjustable track but a single position threaded connection for you to screw the deck plate into.
How would you compare the functionality of the 7'2 vs 7'6 vs 7'11 boards? Want a multipurpose board for SUP, beginner wingsurf lessons amd eventually wing foiling. Thanks in advance!!!
Sorry for the slow reply. The 7’2 has more volume and is dedicated to wing foiling so it doesnt have the windsurf deck plate attachment. The 7’6 and 7’11 offer the same features but 7’6 has slightly less volume (168L vs 185L) and is 1” less wide. If you want a board that can do it all (SUP, sup foil, wing surf, wing foil, windsurf and wind foil) then the choice is between 7’6 or 7’11. If you would like to discuss more please email info@azurewatersports.co.uk
Τhanks for the informative video. 1:25 - Are the side fins included with the board or are they sold separately?
Yes all fins are sold with the board. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.
Nice.
