Jeanette Olsen has a great jump shot including in traffic and all the moves.
This is great. Fun to see the 6/6 game. This explains everything about Iowa girls BBall and CC. Now it all makes sense.
Thank you for this post! This is the first time watching 6 on 6 girls bb. Basically 3 on 3 with a lot of pace and action. Watching the game gave a better understanding of the full/half court rules.
These chicks can really pass.
I'm going out on a limb here - the "Cattle Feeders" are from a rural area, right?. 😂
Lol! Iowa so yeah!
6 v 6 basket ball
I remember seeing a 6v6 game in Oklahoma in the early 80s. We didn’t know that they played by these rules when we walked in, and it blew our minds.
I played for Bennett. Van Horn beat us in the game before finals. We were rated #1 all year. So it was quite a blow to us! But congrats to them ❤
If its not too late, consider removing the score from the title, we'd love to have watched this 'live' !
That was an enjoyable watch. Thanks for the upload.
They don’t miss!!
I think FIBA should reintroduce this version for girls AND boys. It's faster paced and actually fun. Reminds me of netball
Loved the fast moving 6 on 6! Deb Coates was the best. She’s just a sophomore here.
This is fascinating! Debbie Coates is dominant!
Thank you Roman!
Coates absolutely dominating down low. Cheat code
just listened to a 99pi episode that brought me here, this is fun!
Me too!
Haha you and me both - a cool game style
And me!
@@lizzypooh1971 me as well
Ditto!
99% invisible brought me here.
Same. The passes the referees make after each point are so satisfying and they're so quick resume the game that it doesn't really feel like the flow is interrupted at all.
Me too. Never heard of 6 on 6, and I've so hyped
I met Denise long and her cousin Cindy scooping the loop in Marshalltown Iowa in 1968 talked to them at Kim's Drive-In went riding around for a little while and then they had to go home that was just before they won the championship like it was going to be the next day
Fascinatingly different rules in that era! This is a wonderful artifact. I love how the refs hustle to get the ball to mid court after a bucket.
Anita, the first girl I ever kissed. How tragic that whole family turned out. Valley had beat a little town two years in a row, by almost the same score, only, because of the "play back" rules they had, to have to come back in 1963 & 4 and play that little school in their home gym and lose both years. Finally, in '65 they were able to dominate all year until this final game. Hard to believe just 3 years later she would be gone. We were all very proud of you Tigerettes and will always think fondly of you, Anita.
Floppy ran the camera.
I remember being assistant manager for my junior high girls basketball team. Stupid rule that girls could only dribble twice then had to pass the ball or shoot it.
Thank you for this video. Van Horne became part of Benton Community. In later years Norway also was enjoined. They made a movie about that. These small towns were the heart of America. Some of us were lucky to grow up in these communities.
This Manilla 1974 team ranks right up there with the very best of all time in 6-on-6.. There just is not a weak link in the entire starting lineup.
Rooting hard for Kennedy that night...they came up just short.
I remember watching this with my Mom! She loved girls basketball and lettered for Palo high school in 1939 and 40. My Mom passed 11 years ago...and those girls playing that night are in their 60's now. My how fast a person's life fly's along!
Most boring championship game ever.
que raro ver la forma de jugar jajajaa
I go to the Fonda school 🏫🏫🇺🇸🇺🇸
USA 🇱🇷🇱🇷 6 years
Both main scorers had nice jump shots ... could get their shots off today as well ... they really put their legs into it. If losing team would have played straight up man-to-man (no disrespect intended) I think they'd have won ... more chances for misses ... with that distraction. But a great game for the ages ... great competitors none the less on both sides!!
What a game! I remember seeing it on TV. Love hearing Zabel do the game. Great athletes on both sides. They could really play. I thought at the time that the game would go on another couple overtimes! So glad you posted it so I can see it again for the first time in 52 years!
Unfortunately when you show the “Parade of Champions” of the ALL the girls at state .....only the 12 that were not playing the final day are shown... NOT the top 4. Some years you show a bit of the consolation game. Since Gladbrook’s closest game was against Valley-Elgin in the semifinals, it’s a shame we aren’t given a little space. (member of the 1960 & 1961 team)
Give a shoutout to the 1961 Maquoketa Valley team that Valley beat in the District finals. They were at least as good as most of the 16 teams at State. I was on this Valley team... We beat Lost Nation by one 1 point in the beginning of the season. We played terribly... but since it was the only close game all year LN got rated #2. I’d definitely put Maquoketa Valley at #2.
I was at that game. Saw an ad in the paper for people to sell food in stands. Went down to the Auditorium and signed up. Worked a half and turned in the money and uniform. Watched the rest of the game
My sister was one of the starting guards for this team! They could not be beat!
Valley of Wadena, Clermont & Elgin though sadly the school no longer exists.
Back in the day when girls basketball was unique. Playing the 6 -man game was exciting and fast paced. Its a shame they no longer play this way. Its also sad that Farragut is no longer a school. Due to lack of student numbers the school was consolidated and moved elsewhere in the county. Farragut schools dont even exist today.
My high school (New Market) was in the same conference and the smallest and the first to close. Several years ago I heard that Sidney was playing eight-man football. The team traveled in three buses back in the day. We were lucky to suit 25 kids.
to bad this style of basketball is gone...……….if you lived in iowa...Tuesdays and Fridays...girls basketball games were the place to be
Agreed. The best six-on-six team ever. I've been to the state girls' tournament since 1970. No guard court could stop this team...not even the Emmetsburg team of '91, which would come in second overall.
I was there that night, and for the earlier games as well. I went to East and these girls were my classmates. Definitely the best 6 on 6 team ever. This team went 56-1 my junior and senior years, losing in 1978 only to the eventual state champions, after having defeated them earlier in the year. May of these same ladies also won the state softball championship later that year.
Jean Rostermundt went on to play BB at the University go New Mexico and was inducted into their Hall of Fame.
Yes, all the Rostermundt girls are sisters. We had 9 girls in our family and 3 boys. Most all of us played BB , but the youngest 4 all played in state tournament games in the early 70’s. Fun to see the game again. I remember the excitement of being there. Connie Rostermundt Huffaker
I loved 6-on-6 girls' basketball (yes, I'm a native Iowan) and I was 7 years old when this game was played. I only got to watch the first half, because my mom made me go to bed at halftime. I was really disappointed, because up to then it had been a very exciting game. She, of course, hadn't watched any of it, so she didn't realize she missed history in the making. I'm so glad the game has been posted on RUclips, and I've watched it several times.
Six-on-six was a weird-looking game, but the girls who played it very obviously knew what they were doing. If you had video from girls' five-on-five games from most other states in the same era, the skills and strategy simply wouldn't have been there.
There was no 5 on 5 in any other state or any state at that time that I know of. Only a few states had any organized girls BB - Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi but I'd have to do research. And the states that did have it and they played 6 on 6! Iowa was definitely the pioneer of girls BB and was due to the Iowa Girls High School Athetic Director at the time - Wayne Cooley. The girls of Iowa were like Avis Rent A Car "They tried harder".
@@deniserife7694 Denise Long Rife - leading scorer from the winning team?!?!
Denise Long, Cindy Long and Debbie Calloway are a force on the offensive end. All of these girls can play. Very entertaining and competitive. The 6 on 6 game is really interesting and entertaining. Cindy played a really important role in this win by sinking all of her shots early when the defense sagged and doubled Denise. If Cindy hadn't made her shots and hurt the cattle feeders they could have collapsed on Denise all game long. Cindy and Denise were a really dynamic duo. Just fabulous watching the cousins do their thing. Denise was hitting fall away jumpers with a defender draped all over her and Cindy was automatic on long range set shots. Totally different styles equally as lethal.
Michelle, Donna & Coach Bullock have all gone on to play basketball with E. Wayne Cooley.
I know Bill Lombard of West Lyon, Their athletic teams have always been tough as hell.
This is better than the NBA 💯 aleast it ain't fixed😂
To be a part of the Sweet Sixteen was an honor, I would like to see all the games running up to the finals. it would be interesting to see those who didn't make the finals. I really enjoy watching the films, if you played six on six, the five on five played now just isn't good basketball and I have noticed that the interest just isn't there. In the 60's we played before a packed house and now the interest just isn't there. I'm very glad you have posted these games, please keep up the good work
