Introduction to my channel

Here's a short introductionary video about myself and my plans for this RUclips channel.
Love that Video. I travel trough the main station daily on my way to work. Overall it is much better than the old Südbahnhof. Which i only know from the eastern Side and the whole construction site. moving that lovely piece of art on the way to the garage is a major dissapointment, since i never saw it before the video, because who would go to the garage on a railwaystation in the middle of a city that is well connected with so many good public transport connection. When i read the comments it would make sense to convert the garage to another underground station and expand the capacity of the rail. The point of the Bicycle gargage which show in the video is only the half part there is one on the other exit of the trainstation, which has a 24h storage. There is so much more i wanted to say about but cannot find the right words at the moment. Have to give you a like and a sub.
Thank you! 😊 Yeah, I agree the artwork should be positioned somewhere more prominent where people actually see it. Ah yeah, I've seen the other half of the bike garage, didn't know it had 24h storage though. 👍
❤Thank you for a fantastic video! As a newcomer to the city, I enjoy the transportation and shopping facilities of the main station tremendously!😂
Thank God! Finally done. The first time when they had closed it, I didn't think it was such a big deal as the U2 partial closure didn't seem as if it would be a bit deal. However, it was interesting how much of an annoyance that section closure was. Glad it finally reopened. Don't see the purpose of those glass doors though!
I love it, but it is way too small. I guess, in a year or so they will start tearing everything apart again for the underground tracks. Or, should they go up? Berlin Hbf has several levels over each other...
MEGA MEGA VIDEO VIENNA MEGA
12.500 platforms
Lol, there wouldn't be much of Vienna left if that were the case. 😂
I have been at that station many times over many years back to its service as the Suedbahnhof. I have never seen that art work either!
Yes, you would have thought they could of put it at a prominent place where people actually see it, not hidden away somewhere downstairs.
8min walk from the platforms down to U1 is just way too long,...
Great video! One question: why do so many big city central train stations in Germany and Austria (Berlin and Wien Hbf included) have parking structures, and who are using them and why? Are they mostly for taxis, or are there that many people who want or need to arrive in their own car or pick up a rental at the Hauptbahnhof instead of at a suburban park and ride station? I always found this odd coming from a country that built way too many park and rides in hopes of reducing car trips to the city centre (often to the detriment of public transport ridership overall)
Good question... 🤔 I guess it's mainly for people from the city and the region to drive to the station and then catch a long-distance train service. What I do know is that the number of car parking spaces that were built are exactly the same amount that they had in the plans from the 1990s (I think approx. 1.200). Personally I think it would have made more sense to have less car parking. Just think how many bicycle spaces you could have fit in there instead.
Very well said. Im from Britain but live in Vienna too for many years.
There are some valid criticisms about the Hbf but the "there is only one 1 subway line" is nonsense. The Hbf has been designed as a tandem with Bhf Meidling. While Meidling is a very cramped station it offers a super efficient transfer to the U6. All trains stop at both stations and therefore there are two efficient subway connections effectively and on top of that the Stammlinie will be upgraded to full subway frequency and it is telling that it is still commonly ignored by pundits. 3 rapid transit line connections are perfectly fine and there are several tram lines and bus lines on top of it all.
Fair point you make there. The longer walking distance is more of a problem. It does get very crowded on the U1 from Hbf heading towards the city though. Although this will slightly improve when the U2 to Matzleinsdorfer Platz comes (and the upgrade of the "Stammstrecke" as you mentioned).
@@TSFTransport I would rather say that it will massively improve with the U2 at Matzleinsdorfer Platz. This is a 3rd north/south U-Bahn connection across the most central part of Vienna (right through the modern commercial heart) and it connects to the trains of the Stammstrecke, effectly increasing the subway capacity for those S-Bahn transfers by 50%. Add to that the Stammstrecke itself is being currently upgraded and prepared for longer trains and much tighter max frequency and we'll see a massive capacity increase there as well and the Stammstrecke is actually another north south connection by itself (that directly connects to Hbf and Meidling) The 2nd subway is really a non-issue even if the U1 is currently pretty busy.
I wouldn't be surprised that architects and engineers are studying the idea of building a second set of through-running platform on a HIGHER level than the current station. It won't be cheap, though.
To be honest, I can't imagine they will build anything more overground over the top of that large roof structure, that would be rather odd. If anything comes, it will have to be underground.
The orginal 18th century Südbahnhof and Ostbahnhof were destroyed in 1872 not 1956. The second Iteration of Süd and Ostbahnhof were not destroyed in the Second World War, it was only damaged, it was repaired and functional until in the 1950s when the deliberate decision to destroy the West, Nord (worst damaged during WWII), Nordwest, Franz Joseph, Süd and Ostbahnhof was made.
Thanks for the clarification.
me as an Austrian, I don't think that Vienna MTS is particularly interesting or beutiful, but it does it's job pretty well imo. Though yeah the limited bycicle infra at the station is pretty sad, or Vienna as a whole. But Austria (sadly) isn't known for its bike infrastructure unlike the Netherlands
Unfortunately not, Vienna definitely has some catching up to do there.
Another aspect worth to mention, also with regard to other big infrastructure projects (like Stuttgart 21, 2. Stammstrecke in Munich or Airport Berlin-Brandenburg) is that the initial budget and time plan could be kept ⏰💶 The costs for Hauptbahnhof Wien amounts to roughly 1 billion Euros and the project can be considered to be planned soundly.
True. 👍
@@TSFTransport Very well and sophisticatedly made documention. I very much enjoyed watching it 👍🥇
@@martinwien8242 Thank you so much!
Good video! Can tell you put a lot of work and research into this. 👌
Yes, has been lots of work, glad you like it. 👍
U5 should be extended to Hbf!
Regarding capacity, one major flaw is the lack of dedicated tracks for S-Bahn and local services. As you correctly pointed out, the original plans included 4 underground platforms that would have served this function, with convenient transfers due to their location right underneath the long-distance platforms. Unfortunately this space is now occupied by the parking garage. Additionally, this now also locks in the capacity on the S-Bahn 'Stammstrecke' (which is notoriously overburdened) for the next decades. Having more platforms there (even more than the originally planned 4) would have been very necessary. So in hindsight an arrangement of e.g. 6+10 (or even 8+10) platforms would have been more adequate, not only for future growth, but even for the current amount of traffic. Actually this would even have made construction easier. In the current setup the existing underground S-Bahn station had to be rebuilt while in service, whereas a new, grander underground section could have been comfortably built to the side of it (that area was excavated for the parking garage and the station's foundations anyways). Afterwards, the old S-Bahn tunnel could have easily been converted into a parking garage for the whole quarter (as it runs the length of it). This limited capacity also ties in to the second major drawback: location. Building the new station off to the side of Südtirolerplatz not only makes the way to the U1 longer than necessary, it also makes the whole station arrangement less clear - particularly with the double-use of platforms (due to the lack of capacity), which requires a 100m walk along the platform to get to the other train. This is especially confusing for tourists, but also for locals. When you come up the main escalator you only see the display for the first half of the platform. The slight curve and the roof pillars obscure the view along the platform, so people often aren't aware that their train is leaving from the other half. Thus, there regularly are confused people missing their train or ending up in Budapest instead of the airport because they boarded the wrong train. While this could be somewhat alleviated with better signage and/or maybe a second display showing the train on the far side (with a big arrow pointing in that direction), it could have been easily avoided by just locating the station about 300m to the east - centrally over Südtirolerplatz, with the main corridor running under the middle of the platforms and escalators left and right.
Good point that you say about a new S-Bahn station causing less restrictions during the construction, hadn't thought about that. Yeah, I also think moving the U1 station closer to the Hbf would have been better. The long platforms to accommodate up to two trains is definitely a good thing, but yeah, signage could be better - especially when the train departs further away where you might not expect it (although this is a problem in all Austrian train stations, not just Wien Hbf).
@@TSFTransport relocating the U1 station wouldn't even have been necessary if the main station were just built 300m to the east. Yes, platforms are often split and used by two trains in Austria, but at Wien Hbf the offset location of the escalators combined with the poor visibility along the platforms definitely makes it worse.
Definitely one of the best railway station of Europe.
I didnt know that there are already capacity issues with storing the trains next to the station. That certainly DOES sound short-sighted.
You deserve way more subscribers.
Thanks!
But not forget Meidling. Not for its look but for it functional reasons (all trains from the west take a halt there) with U6 and so on. And the other ways beside the U1, to travel on.
Soon there will also be the U2 connection at Matzleinsdorferplatz, where (almost) all S-Bahn and local services stop.
@@stephanweinberger yea I was thinking of that but don't write it explicit.
Great Video!
Well explained video 😊
Thank you. 😊
Where is the platform door in the first station?
The first station was not part of the modernisation, hence no platform doors.
i'm barely old enough to remember the old südbahnhof but i still miss it regardless. no through station will ever achieve the same level of charm of a terminus staion. too bad westbahnhof is the only one left like this in vienna that isn't underground. and the lack of historic station buildings is a shame too in vienna. i remember on my trip to the uk i was stunned by all the beautiful buildings. beautiful brickwork, tall roofs, it was delightful
Yes, the UK definitely has some stunning train stations, which I myself still need to explore more. 😅
Wow... Just, wow... I wish I lived in Austria for longer, or had a chance to visit it at least once.
its really a shame that they did not include space for additional platforms for the future. I guess they have to build them underground instead
don't forget: they found a tank from WW2 during the construction. a borgward IV. it's more like a remotely controlled drone, that can detonate when it is in place.
Ah ok, didn't know about that.
@@TSFTransport yes, they were quite puzzled too, when they found it. they expected airplane bombs, but not a whole tank.
Great video and the quality, that was pretty good from the start. is much better now, but you should get a stabilizer for the camera. I've never been to Wien Huaptbahnhof but I've seen it many times in different videos and I like it (and so does the different youtube rail enthusiastic). As for the platforms, with five island platform (10 tracks) it's pretty big for a through station as trains are not suppose to park there for long time periods. Not building sufficient nearby storage facilities but the advantages of a through station is that it doesn't have to be right next to the station and on the map I see that there are quite a few places a bit further away on both sides. Also, you can always add more platforms/storage underground. In Spain a lot of stations are underground and in many places they moved or are in the process of moving tracks and stations underground as it frees space and allows to connect the sections of the city that are separated by the tracks.
Thank you for the tip with the stabilizer. 👍 Have been gradually upgrading my gear, I'll look into that. That's true what you say about through train stations needing fewer tracks. That is also a thing that there are currently quite a few trains that terminate at Hauptbahnhof and therefore occupy the platforms for a longer time (sometimes up to 30 mins). If (almost) every service were a through service, it would be more efficient. Although the establishment of more through connections is also dependent on some infrastructure projects to be completed (like electrification of the line Vienna - Bratislava, etc.). Enhancing the facilities underground is an option of course. Equally, the area around the station was planned from scratch, and if more space could have been kept free overground, an enhancement could have been more cost-effective in hindsight.
Unfortunately, as I understand it the whole area of Favoriten where the station is located has a difficult geology similar to the one making trouble for the tunneling in Stuttugart 21 (lots of Anhydrite rock) which makes underground construction rather expensive. This is why a connection from the Pottendorfline through Favoriten to the Station -while theoretically a massive improvement- is not currently economically feasible.
@@philippvelimirovic2284 It wouldn't have been too complicated to add a proper underground section; the whole area was excavated for the station foundations and the parking garage anyways. There even was a tunnel connecting the two old stations which has been partially reused for utilities. Originally the railway line that is now the S-Bahn 'Stammstrecke' branched off near the entrance of the current tunnel, ran along former goods yard (basically where the main station is now), passed under Arsenalstraße and parallel to Ghegastraße (that end of the tunnel was used as access road to the postal services at the old Südbahnhof). The old tunnel entrance can still be seen at Ghegastraße (today the aircon units for some of the buildings are located there, the pipes run along the old tunnel). Also, the Pottendorfer line is connected at Meidling; the flyover near Matzleinsdorferplatz only exists to allow trains to run there without crossing tracks.
It was really an interesting video.we also dint know that part of Wien Hauptbahnhof where all the old pictures (art work)of the station are. now we are planning to visit specially that area.:) thanks to you. You really explain the history so interestingly.kudos to you 😊👍
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it. 😊
I agree with the comment of one of the people you interviewed that the Hauptbahnhof feels like an airport (in a good way). I think the various shopping and eating options are good as well.
Never heard of the bycicle Garage at Wien Hauptbahnhof before. Very interesting fact
I've passed that many times and never realized it was a parking garage. I always thought it was a bicycle shop/repair station.
You should really have more subscribers. It kinda fells like a mix of Geoff Marshall style exploration and a documentary.
Thank you, that's a great compliment. 😊
I agree! I follow Geoff Marshall too.
What do you like or dislike about Wien Hauptbahnhof? 🚅 Leave a comment down below? ⬇️
I love everything l, I often go there to travel anywhere with my friends:)
It's an improvement to what came before, but the limited capacity makes for a Hamburg Hbf-esque Situation in the Future. As an outside person, the wayfinding can be really unintuitive, it's very crammed. Idk why they only signal the tram stops under the overpass for half the platform, I fell for this multiple times. Just tell me where to go clearly, when you have multiple tram stops around. Addendum since I just read the channels bio: happy studying from a fellow urban planning student from Lübeck ;) Hope it goes well and you end up in a position that suits your interests!
Concerning the tram stops, do you mean the tram stop of line D (it's the seperate on the eastern end of the station). Never noticed the bad signage before, but I guess as a local you don't realize these things as much. 😅 Nice to hear you're studying the same thing. 😁 Wish you all the best with your studies. 👍
This is a really good video! I agree that not having a full ring service is suboptimal. Is there no room to squeeze more tracks in, or enhance signalling to increase train volume?
More tracks is not really possible, especially the area around Wien Meidling and Hauptbahnhof is quite limiting in terms of future expansions. Improved signaling could be an option. Another thing that might help is organising other train services differently so that fewer trains terminate at Wien Hbf (hence shorter times the trains have to occupy the platforms) Generally I feel the feasibility study didn't examine the full scope of possible options for the ring line though. Maybe with some more tweaks a through ring line could have been possible. By the way, I have another video planned for February where I will also cover the possibility of some larger ring variants.
Awesome video, so cool to see the screen doors in and the work for the connection of U5 with present day U2~!
Hi Reece, glad you enjoyed my video. ;D I certainly enjoyed watching your videos over the years, wishing you all the best for your future.
Thank you for this video, I've learned some things about the line that I've lived by since moving to Vienna 3 years ago. I didn't knew about the former stations Unter-Döbling and Baumgarten, even though I lived in this area. Now I live near the Station Penzing and I've noticed that there was a former Station called Baumgarten. Do you know if there is anything remaining from this former station?
No, I don't think there's anything that still remains from Baumgarten station. What I do know though is that there are plans to build a second track for the S45 between Penzing and Hütteldorf which will also include the construction of a new station again at Baumgarten again. Should happen at some point during the 2030s.
I was there while after eating McDonald’s
5:22 I don’t think the official proposal is too bad to be honest. Like in London, you still have passenger services operating in a ring around the city with the London Overground’s Mildmay and Windrush lines, albeit with one change at Clapham Junction or Canonbury / Highbury & Islington. The major benefit of such a solution is that disruption on one of the lines does not affect the entire ring (Mildmay line services are on the North and West of the ring, with Windrush line services on the East and South of the ring).
Yeah, it is true what you say about the reliability aspect. In the case of Vienna, the S45 is more or less seperate from all other train services, hence it is a very reliable service, which might be impacted if it were combined into a through ring line. That might have also played a role in deciding to keep them seperate.
Great video, I subscribed!
Thanks! 😊
Great video! The coincidence of me releasing a video about the "Manner Christmas Tram" tomorrow is insane! xD
Thanks! Sounds great, I'll check it out. ;)
