    I struggling with the question: What would I use the homelab for? Is it even useful for me ? Do I need to have a physical server at home or is it good enough to use a cloud provider?

    • @mischavandenburg
      @mischavandenburg 3 дня назад

      A homelab can be used to gain practical skills for the job you have in mind. You can definitely start with cloud, use Hetzner for the cheapest prices, but there is something very satisfying about running applications on your own physical servers. You can just use an old laptop or a raspberri pi to start with

    • @petrifiedDuck-wv3wf
      @petrifiedDuck-wv3wf 3 дня назад

      Alternatively you can begin by running Virtual Machines if your computer has enough CPU cores and RAM. That way you can start learning some things without paying anything for cloud or hardware. That's how I got my first experience in linux, scripting and networking.

    • @_fr3d_
      @_fr3d_ 3 дня назад

      VMs on your laptop are a great start and you can branch out from there. It’s the equivalent of a workbench where you can build and break things , developing a deeper understanding without the risk of taking down a production server or bricking your host machine

    I can see the virtue of being this kind of person. But what do you do if you believe you're genuinely not at fault for something? For instance, I got blamed by my boss for deploying something that wasn't ready for production. What he's overlooking is the only reason the system let me do the deployment is because he approved it! When I pointed this out he said I "should have known" not to deploy it, regardless of his approval. But I don't agree. How am I supposed to take responsibility for this if I don't believe I'm the one at fault? When you have a boss that likes to point fingers, it seems dangerous to let yourself become his scapegoat.

    • @mischavandenburg
      @mischavandenburg 7 дней назад

      It doesn’t sound like it’s your fault. But maybe you can take responsibility in a different way. Maybe you can make it a responsibility to set up a proper ci/cd system that verifies that those applications are actually ready for deployment. Rather than blaming my boss back, I would try to think constructively in this situation

    I use Windows 11 +WSL2 for my content creation / personal and a very happy with it. I also have a MacBook Pro but is my company's laptop and I don't like to mix things so... Building a PC is a good idea in my opinion if you don't need to move around with your computer and also you can get double the performance for half of the price.

    I have to use MacOS for my work and I absolutely hate it. The UI is so damn unintuivitve. Window management is an absolute nightmare. I don't know why people say Apple products are so easy to use and intuivitve. The poorly designed colored buttons for window sizing for example work different depending on application.

    How do we improve communication?

    • @mischavandenburg
      @mischavandenburg 8 дней назад

      Becoming conscious of it for starters. There’s many good books on the subjects of communication, soft skills and influencing people. While it’s not something you master overnight, improving how you communicate effectively little by little has profound effect on your professional career but also social life.

    If you care about keeping your MVP status and being "plugged in" to Microsoft then yeah Windows might make sense (WSL is very good these days). Otherwise I'd just get a Mac - most of the time you don't need the grunt but it comes in real handy for video editing (not to mention running local LLM). As an engineer I love Thinkpad with Linux - it's great for engineer activities but not when you need other non-work stuff like video editing, driver support as you saw. At least if you buy the Mac you can write off the cost against tax. I can understand you not wanting to eat into that buffer, it is a very bad time for work right now, even contracting/freelance. What you said at the end is right: as a content creator you are stuck for only Mac or Windows, unfortunately Linux doesn't work well yet.

    • @mischavandenburg
      @mischavandenburg 9 дней назад

      NixOS is definitely high up on the list of things I want to experiment with. I started using the Nix package manager in my devcontainer setup and I love the idea of having my OS completely defined in code. On the other hand, it's a deep rabbit hole to go down

    • @_modiX
      @_modiX 8 дней назад

      He is freelancer, I doubt there is much time to dig too much with NixOS. At least in my experience I had to write nix files for packages I wanted to use for my work that were not supported. If there is money on the line and a deadline, you have no time to tinker around. For this reason I also stay on macOS. I love linux, but at a daily driver is a tough choice, since I also need to deploy iOS apps. And since Mac is unix based and has great software support (almost like Windows), I think macOS is such a good choice if you can afford it. I wish their company wasn't that hostile towards their users.

    Great, I want to try out a few builds on one char and change skills while lvling up, because while a builds is great at lvl 80+, it might suck at lvl 12-29 while you are not spending points to use them at lvl 30. Now I can freely use them and can still freely repsecc at lvl 30 or whenever I feel it's needed.
