Sledge-hammer and wedges on big block
Here we are breaking up a big block into smaller pieces so that they can be reduced further into manageable sizes as firewood.

How to quickly start a flooded chainsaw.
Просмотров 835Год назад
Easy way to unflood a chainsaw and get it started. Wrap tape tightly around throttle, in such a way that tape can be easily unwrapped afterwards. Have the choke fully in (i.e. no choke). Stop/start switch in start position. Pull cord until the saw fires up. Quickly remove tape to stop saw from revving fully. Saw should not be revved fully until it is allowed to warm up for a minute or two.
Why is Elm wood so hard to split?

Windblown tree being separated from root ball

Large root ball and about six feet of stump are cut away from the rest of the trunk. My position while doing the cut is precarious. It's on a slope and next to a stream, which is at the base of the root ball and is not visible on the video. This makes a retreat difficult, if I want to get out of there fast.

How hard is it to split Elm with knots? This is not for the faint-hearted.
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.3 года назад
This is a block/round of Elm with a big knot in it. I was fully expecting to fail in splitting this one and I had the chainsaw on hand to give assistance. For the same reason, I did not use my regular splitting block (which is in the right hand corner of the video). The 5kg (11 lb) and 6kg (13.2 lb) mauls were the main splitters and I needed the weight for stuff as tough as that. Also, I had a ...
Elm! Is it the toughest wood to split?
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.3 года назад
Even though it has been almost wiped out by Dutch Elm disease, I got the opportunity recently to split some Elm, and its reputation is well deserved. It is notoriously hard to split. This block, that I worked on, was medium sized without knots and had straight grain, and it was heavy work. The big 11lb (5kg) maul was used on this job: anything lighter would not work, at least until the block wa...

    • @michaelkearney5562
      @michaelkearney5562 День назад

      @@marksaint2936 It’s there mainly to stop any split items from falling off the block. There is no reaching down to pick stuff up off the ground for the next swing as a result. It saves time and the work gets done much quicker. The horizontal length of timber is there to stop the odd chunk from wanting to head straight for your shins (expletive) which can happen frequently when doing this type of work.

      Ben, I got this address directly from the Muller company, a few years ago, giving the details of a company in Carlisle that carry their products. Check their website. I'm sure that if you ring their number, they should be able to help you. Be specific about what you want. The Muller catalogue number for the 5kg maul with ash handle is 0257 50; and the hickory handled item is 0259 50. CARR´S BILLIGTON SAFETY KINGSTOWN BROADWAY KINGSTOWN IND. EST. This video brings back memories , I split a few winters worth of elm a good few years back and it's tough stuff alright! My maul just bounced off it, I borrowed a 4 ton hydraulic splitter which didn't even leave a mark on some of it! A lot had to be done with sledge & wedges but I have to say my Fiskars X27 was very effective also. If I never have to split a piece of elm again, I won't shed a tear about it!

    Hello Michael. This brings back 'happy' memories. Yes, I split nothing but Elm for two years when I lived in Yorkshire because a lot of dead trees came down between 1987 and 1989. Swinging a 3 kilo maul hour after hour was indeed a tough workout. I also tried one of those twisted 'grenade' wedges which helped on the stumps. On some stumps I would cut vertically with a chainsaw. After 2 years I had my elbows strapped up for a while as they were very painful. Well, I got over it and still swing the same maul today, sadly I do not get to burn the old Elm here in Canada though. Good to see you again, Chris

    Those were some good bounces, and yeah can remember that from a time well passed for me now. Still feel my mouth tense up just thinking about wood splitting. Especially after my dad refused a power splitter because "hand splitting builds character". Built blisters and a lot of grudge at the time. There was also a lot of not good natured picking at about 'building muscles and not being fat.' the man also reminded of at every opportunity.
