The Fujifilm X-M5 Has the 'Cinematic Look' (Ep.2)

Testing the colour science of the X-M5. The cinema is ours with this one. Testing Eterna Film Simulation and shooting 1080p in FLog2 with the Fujifilm X-M5. Next in DaVinci Resolve (free version) and using the Arri Alexa Log C to REC709 LUT to colour grade it since there was nothing specific for the Fuji profile. There are no further tweeks. I'm happy with the results.

If you're having an issue with your new X-M5 shutting off unexpectedly with the XC 15-45mm kit lens then you must update the lens software to at least 1.12. It's a known issue.

The problem is not just Adobe and other US owned software giants, but Apple and also Microsoft. There is a Cartel at work between the hardware manufacturers and those who engineer the software. Even with a so called perpetual licence one is forced to buy new software as the older hardware somehow does not seem able to run the new so called upgraded software, or the new OS all of a sudden is no longer compatible with older hardware or software!!! Amazing, isn’t it?

I have an xt2, great little camera
Did a Tokyo trip with my XT2 earlier in the year. Love it as well.
when i downloaded the firmware it downloaded a folder with these files. XFUP0029.DAT, XFUP0036.DAT, XFUP0066.DAT. which one do I install?
How did you do to have this beautiful bokeh ?
Just opened the aperture wide and compensated for the the over exposure using a variable ND filter. Ed

I was sold on the xh1. I am a Sony shooter I just wanted to use it for my Takumars but now I think this better. This is beautiful work.
I have both the X-T1 and X-H1. The addition of IBIS and Eterna in the H1 make it superior along with the sensor. BUT the T1 is the one that I bring along because of the form factor and the X Trans 2 sensor is the ‘sweet spot’ for me. Ed

I just put the PASM dial into ‘M’ manual. Shutter at double the frame rate (1/48 in my case for 23.97 fps) and let auto ISO do its thing. Auto for the autofocus. Autofocus is set to locked on 3 and speed 0. Ed
@MyContrails M on the duial. For video. I think I'm doing something wrong. Because I can't film when I put the dial on M. I'm in 6k, Vlog2 . I'm shooting for a restaurant and on the screen of the camera it's seems ok but when I saw my footages. OMG, the image hunting and sometimes Lost the focus with no reason. It's a little bit stressful
No. Keep the dial at the movie camera, hit the ‘Q’ button and chance the top left icon to the ‘M’ manual mode of shooting.

I have the xt5 and the Canon R5 but I still use my xt1 the most ..
I really feel the sweet spot for me is the XT1 and XT10 with the xtrans2. For the photo experience anyway. I just want a Fuji that is easy and reliable for video. I’ll figure it out with trial and error. Ed

Thanks for the video, camera keeps hunting.. is it the lens? I was hoping this would be a good camera within my budget. I now guessing all the cameras from fuji are like this.

THANK YOU!! literally just the videos I was looking for before pulling the trigger on the on xm5. you're even doing the vlog style that I want to try. from what i gather from your tests so far, Fujifilm haven't quite ironed out their AF and MF is the way to go for vlogging, thus not beginner friendly? Also, have you had an opportunity to test aperture priority mode? more or less hunting?
I think it’s ok for vlogging. The autofocus is sharp. It’s the hunting of the aperture in shutter priority mode that’s annoying. Which is the way I like to shoot video to keep the 180 degree rule. I’d like ISO to compensate for exposure first before aperture spoils the bokeh. I’m going to reset the camera and try vlogging as it comes straight out of the box except for saving the file in Flog2 colour.
The XC35mm F2 is a terrible lens for AF. Its tack sharp, but not a video lens at all. I've had no issues at all for the AF, using the Tamron 11-20mm F2.8. The digital stabilisation is not great, but digital stabilisation is always poor on large format cameras. I'd use a gimbal! Product placement mode only works in the VLOG setting, it would be nice if it worked in all modes.
I have the issues with the XC 15-45mm kit lens as well. I thought you could switch PP mode on in any mode? Thanks for the info. I’ll check it out. Ed

Is this recorded in 4K 60? Have you gotten it to overheat? Do you think I could use it for filming a concert or doing a short film?
So far I’ve not got it to overheat. However I only tested it for a short time (15mins) at 6.2k with no issues. No doubt other RUclipsrs (Gerald Undone) will do that. I shoot at 1080p to be honest.

Yes it has an ‘interval timer’ shooting function.

The Fuji will shoot time lapse via the ‘interval shooting’ setting. To be perfectly honest if you’re after a photo-centric camera then I’d recommend the X-T50 or T30mk2. I’m not perfectly happy with the hunting of the autofocus system on the X-M5 for video. I have to shoot in manual Aperture AND shutter to stop it hunting in video. Something the Sony just doesn’t do. For video the Sony is still better. If you’re after straight out of camera jpegs and in camera conversations to other simulations then the Fuji is great. Fuji X mount lenses are MUCH more expensive than the Sony E mount. Depends what you have already though. I find the ZV-E10 easier to use and trust it more. Time will tell though. Ed

So this was my first go at FLog2 to Rec709. I used the built in LUT in DaVinci Resolve. However I’ve subsequently found the download for the Fuji created on. Get the new Fuji LUT from here: fujifilm-x.com/en-gb/support/download/lut/
I think you are right. This is a camera that was built on a lab bench next to a first gen ZV-E10 in the bowels of Fuji HQ. It's the same concept but executed better.
Except that the autofocus on the Fuji still hunts a little. 👍

The grip is terrible. I’ve an L mount with grip extension on the way. View finder is an issue for the true photographer but this is more a vlog camera for me with all of those gorgeous film simulations. It’s geared for those that never have used one, graduating on from a phone. Ed

I don’t have an xs-20 to compare. You can boost the screen for sunshine but we’ve not had too much of that. Literally only had it 2 days so far. 😁
How's the battery life in normal mode and while doing the 6.2K OG? And what do you think about the grip and the photography on this camera? Do you think the XS20 would be a better overall camera as opposed to this camera? Thank you
Battery is in line with what you’d expect but can use USB and a power pack if needs be. I only carry one extra battery for the day. XS20 wins for IBIS alone but it’s much larger. I can work around lack of IBIS for the tiny form factor.

@@bimalkajishiwakotias a photographer an EVF is always missed. It also creates another point of contact to stabilise the shot. The X-T50 might be a better option. It’s still small enough.

Yes i had to that when i bought the same lens.. but i was fitting to the XM-1. 😅 Unfortunately the firmware update didn't get focus ring to act as a slow zoom(dual function) The downside of buying 10 years camera with newer lens...

Thanks for doing this video. I agree the XT10 is excellent for street photography when I need an EVF and tilt screen. I also have an X70 and think about what "could" replace it. Considered an XM1 or XM5 to keep all my batteries the same but worry that I will miss the controls.
I’m warming to it only because it has 4 custom presets. I use them for std video/ slow mo/colour photo and monochrome photo. It’s a work around but it usable.

I have it on preorder and hopefully should have one by this weekend. i am still on the fence if this is the right one. as I am wondering which all dials can i assign for Iso and shutter speed. as i only shoot manual. have also ordered a 27mm 2.8 that will be the only lens i plan to use. this will an EDC camera for me. form factor is the only thing that made me order this
Not just as easy on this one as, say an X-T. If you have an ‘R’ lens then it has the aperture ring. In manual you have shutter on the top rear dial and ISO on the front roller so all good. 👍

What Film simulation are you using on your color photos? Btw, I still have my X-t1 and blown away every time I take it with me
I mostly use Velvia for colour and B+W with the red filter for the monochrome. Ed

I use a standard UV or a CPL if I’m shooting water or cars.
