Skyline Pastures
США
Добавлен 5 янв 2020
Here at Skyline Pastures we are building our farm one day at a time. We started out with pastured raised broiler chickens, and have expanded to pork and beef. We feel that if we can improve the welfare of our animals, while practicing ethical and regenerative farming methods, then we are obligated to do so. Who wouldn’t want to raise and eat the best food possible if it were in their means to do so? Our products will help families eat amazing food while refreshing skills like cooking a whole chicken and using all of the bird so that it provides multiple meals. We are very excited to get this farm going and are happy for anyone interested in learning from our efforts!
Silvopasture Pigs: Using Pigs to Mulch Pasture Seed and Create Good Soil Contact
We spread seed in front of the pigs, allowing them to trample it and create good soil contact. We then throw them bales of hay so that they can spread it out and mulch the seed for us, increasing propagation and lessening the need for irrigation.

Silvopasture Pigs: Paddock 5 Initial Walkthrough
Просмотров 40Месяц назад
This may or may not be the final paddock of 2024. It depends on a variety of factors, such as weather, pig disturbance, and my observations. As the pigs move through the thick brambles of this pasture we will monitor what they eat, what they trample, and what they avoid, and take appropriate action.
Silvopasture Pigs: 2024 Paddock 4 Final Walk through
Просмотров 35Месяц назад
In the video I am unsure of which paddock this was so I call it the "August Paddock". It is Paddock 4, and while it took a beating, it will recover quickly. The pigs had an enormous mud hole in this one, so while there are some dry barren areas, they had plenty of access to moisture.

Don't Make This Mistake With Piglets in Your Silvopasture!
how many months old aree they? they look 325-400lbs! you grew em out huge and quick.
They were just under 8 months in that video. They were processed a day or 2 later with an average hanging weight of 223 lbs. so your estimate of live weight is right on! They did great.
@@skylinepastures8445 a few of them barrows have some chunky rear ends
@@skylinepastures8445 they look nice
Great video, thanks! What’s the name of the feeder you are using?
Thanks! It is the Brower WF40.
i love hand picking pears apples and hickory nuts for my hogs too! they love these treats. i like giving my hogs some papaya scrap and bananas from the store too
Every day I walk around the farm and pick up whatever has fallen (walnuts, acorns, hickory nuts, chestnuts, apples, pears). They love it and it is a good way to train them to come when called!
@@skylinepastures8445 nice yea you got a cool breed going. You think you'll raise the same type next year. they are berk duroc and old spot right? Im getting litters from my 2.5 yr old berk duroc york red wattle sow (black and white spotted) (father was black and white spotted) (mother was black and white spotted) with pure berkshire, so the piglets are all black and white spotted or 6 ends to resemble more of a berk. Its pretty cool cause her yeild is split evenly on these characteristics. awesome pigs man. i love what you do. I can wait to move back into the country and try and do this more full time.
@@skylinepastures8445 I picked alot of walnuts last year but i didnt know what to do with them. maybe not so good for breeding stock teeth. For bigger feeders I dont see it being as issue tho. But yea theres a ton of nuts out in the sticks. I see the squirrels running around today a bunch of them. Fall will be here soon.
Very nice work
Thanks a lot!
Oh wow
Glad you liked it!
The first two [especially the black one] looks like they have swollen joints in their back legs. That could be why he's moving so slow.
These guys are healthy. They are just well fed and have been eating a lot of apples. They are 7 months old so their joints and bones are good and strong. Don't let the video fool you. They can move very quickly when motivated!
It's hard work carrying all that bacon! 😂
Absolutely :)
So cute
Thanks!
Great idea😊
Thanks...and what makes it better is that the pigs are happy to do it!
My sweet chickies!!! ❤
The look great!
We love our Turkeys. They are so curious and sweet. Makes processing day difficult.
It is tough for us too. They are very sociable birds. That being said, we understand their contribution to our table and we appreciate it greatly. They live a great life on our pastures!
nice job
Thanks!
Great set up lucky piggies
Thanks! We appreciate it. We try to ensure the pigs have the best life possible, living naturally in the woods.
Cute piggy
Thanks! We think so too :)
Are these feeder pigs and/or did you choose for their tendency to root? I guess can you say what criteria you used to decide?
They are feeder pigs. My selection criteria boils down to what is available that year. These guys are old spot /duroc / berkshire...they root and I see that as a benefit because I want them to transform the woods.
トンチャン‼️😢少し年(*`・ω・)ゞでなあーい?👁️見ェ_-_(笑)てるのかしら!!😊ヘヘエ~(笑)
That's one big hog
Kronk is probably 100 lbs...I just hold the camera close to his face!
🎉😊
Glad you liked it!
Awesome setup!
Thanks! We appreciate it.
That looks pretty much like hog-heaven. What are those huts made from? & hoow come they don't chew/em up & mangle' to rubbish? I've been asking why noboody's used thos paddock system too rear up all those little's than get trapped & shot coz nobody can be bothered too raise'm up to a size worth butchering? Do the feral ones actually STOP growing when they reach 100 lbs or thereabouts?
As far as feral hogs I cannot say since they are not prevalent in my area of Pennsylvania (near Hamburg). The shelters are just calf shelters that we use when they are piglets. Once they hit 50 lbs. or so they choose to sleep in the woods and don't really bother with them anymore.
😊
Glad it brought you a smile!
is there any "smart" system you can attach to your fences that can tell you when it is no longer live if it gets grounded. or do you have to manually check all the time?
If there is a "Smart" system I am unaware of it. Checking is easy though and I check the pigs multiple times a day so it is a simple thing to keep the tester in my pocket and just check. The pigs don't typically challenge the fence so it would likely contain them even if it failed, but I like to be safe!
They'll soon quiet down when ot gets too hot. They got plenty of shade, so they doun't need athe Mud for their version of protection against Sun-burn. * it don't look like they've got ant truble from biting insects.
There are some mosquitos down there, but not a ton. The bugs typically let them alone, and I make sure to put plenty of carbon (sawdust, wood chips, etc.) where they choose to go to the bathroom to help it compost and keep the flies down.
你的豬養得精實肥壯真厲害!
I will take the explanation point to mean that you are happy with the video :)
Them two ladies are almost in standing heat. That’s the reason they want all your attention 🤔🤔👍
They were about 7 months old when this video was taken so possibly...I think it was mostly the food :)
So amazing well work
Thanks!
gettin nice and chunky
Nice!
Thanks! Raising pigs in the woods has an incredible effect.
looks like ]berkshire duroc with a little old spot cross. the way the colors are and the floppy ears in teresting nice piglets. what is the breed exactly?
Exactly what you said. They are from a berk/duroc boar and an old spot sow. They are about 4 months old and closing in on 50 lbs. by my guess.
Nice ! Our 2 sows are 1/4 berk, 1/4 duroc, 3/8 york, and 1/8 red wattle and our boar is Berkshire so we get a lot of black and white piglets (since they are 62.5 % berk)
Nice!! New sub here!
Thanks for the sub! Hope you enjoyed the video!
Nice video. Those are some well fed piggies.
They are getting bigger!
Wouldn't it be better to put the feeder next to the fence so you don't have to go inside there pen?
The reason I don't put anything near the fence is because I don't want the pigs bunching up hear it. We have had breakouts in the past is it happens because the pigs are tightly grouped and when one gets zapped they charge the fence since they cannot fine another path to escape.
4:57 they're so adorable 😊
Thanks! They are a joy to raise.
What is variant pig?
Please post more videos
We will be posting quite a few more as the farming seasons kicks into high gear. Thanks for watching and learning!
Ive got same looking property as you. Looks nice. What state you in? I ant wait to start raising pigs. Do you have breeding pair or just grow em out and slaughter?
We are in Pennsylvania near Hamburg. We don't have a breeding pair. We get weaned piglets from a local pig farm and grow them out.
I'm vegan!
You could keep pet pigs to make your woods better :)
cool channel
Thank you so much! Let us know if you have any questions about Silvopasture Pigs!
nice forest you have here. and a flock of porks look beautiful in it
Yes, thank you! They did great this year. We will post all financial data, processing fees, hanging weights, etc. in the near future.

Pigs in the woods epic
We love the effect they have on brush and generally unusable land!
I needed this for some reason .
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very cool ............ need more Rotors .
That would certainly make the pigs happier for sure!
lol thats nice
The pigs think so too 😀
Your book title should be "Antics of a Farmer's Wife"
