      WA47 to Avalon 737 - No EQ- gentle compression to - WA LA2A leveling amplifier - to WA EQP to roll off the bass and touch a 3k lift a bit, then into the DAW. Then a final multiband compressor to add the punch! I use that to de-ess anything harsh and control the boomyness in the sub 200hertz range.

    Hey Brent, I noticed you covered up the breaths in the first promo. I tend to focus on hiding the breaths during takes or re record a portion as Logic Pro is not my friend in this area. Is this a norm editing breaths or this promo?

    • @trailervobrent
      @trailervobrent 6 месяцев назад

      If it is a live recorded session the editor will do that on their end. When I record for a self directed session I take them out. But, you should not have a breath in a sentence. Only in between. Try to get each full sentence or thought it one breath if you can. Makes more a more fluid audio file.

  • @AlphaProto
    @AlphaProto 7 месяцев назад

    The Rode NT-1 has been my work horse for a while. I use my mic for voice acting, so I need a mic that doesn't add too much to my voice (warm, bright, muddy, airy, ect). What I want is a mic that can cancel out more background noise. So my recordings won't have to be distorted by noise compression.

    • @trailervobrent
      @trailervobrent 7 месяцев назад

      Have you tried the CVOX plugin? If you’re able to dry a demo with it!

    • @pianofortestudios2406
      @pianofortestudios2406 Месяц назад

      I have a couple NT1s and find that there's a strange choppiness to the sound I can't deal with. It has to do with how they doubled the voltage to get the lower noise figure. The older NT1As didn't have this. I still use them for a third set of room mics for big venues but I don't use them for primary sources anymore. I'll eventually replace them with AKG 414s but haven't decided on which flavor yet. You might try the TLM107 or the TLM103 if your budget doesn't cover the 107. The top end is emphasized but is silky smooth and clean with low noise. They're not quieter than the NT1s but it was no contest for me on tone. These may be too bright, though, so renting first is a good idea. Or add a sponge pop filter. That will knock down the tone and also eliminate a little room tone at the same time. I think that's what Howard Stern uses. Filtering background is dealt more with treatment and proximity rather than the via mic. I have a TLM102 on my desk at work and its lower sensitivity works with me using it in close proximity with a sponge pop filter. It's surprisingly isolated sounding, actually. I have it going through an analog channel strip so I'm EQ'ing for close proximity before it hits converters. Most of the bigger mics will let in a lot of background. Honestly, if background is the biggest problem after treatment with blankets and the like, you may want to look at a cardioid small diaphragm instead. With proximity you'll gain back the low end you might otherwise be loosing. Audio Technica 4051 would be great here but I've used Oktava MK-012s, RODE NT5s, and Soyuz SU-013 for this job before. Of course the MKH-416 is nice, too, but it's very v-shaped and noisier than the specification in real life. I wouldn't do long form with it. What sounds better to me is the Sphere L22 emulating a 416 but unless you've got an Apollo interface, that may not be the way to go and all-in it's an expensive setup compared to an NT1. I admit I overcooked the post-processing on this, but here's a sample from when I had the Oktava MK-012 on my desktop mic stand mainly because of the form factor. You can hear how isolated it is. facebook.com/share/v/gNerwasMb521nfJb/ Best thing I ever had on my desk was an AKG C12 remake. Nothing like real tube mics. Something duller like the WA47 is decent for long-form but lets in quite a bit of room and needs to warm up at least 20 minutes (so they told me). It works after a minute but the top end keeps developing for a while. It's definitely not the best 47 remake out there and they lost me with the delay on replacing a bad out-of-the-box tube and cable. I waited six months for a replacement cable and had to use my C12 cable in the meantime.

    Thank you so much for this rambling (in a very good way) download of information! It makes me feel good about how picky I’ve been with microphones, when you say that you have this idea of what you want your voice to sound like. I’ve used some microphones that are very fancy and highly recommended, but they didn’t make my voice sound “like me”. I’m also definitely going to explore the WA world a little more.

    Hey Brent, quick question on standing vs stool and copy height ... Do you prefer sitting or standing and is your copy usually eye level below eye level or above. In this video it looks like you're on a stool looking eye level or upward to read the copy. I'm trying to find a comfortable position to improve concentrating thanks

    • @trailervobrent
      @trailervobrent 7 месяцев назад

      You should never been looking down, it closes your throat. Unless, you're intentionally doing that to get a different pitch. Eye level or above to keep the airways open and a natural sounding voice. I stood for about 10 years. I'm sitting just because of the layout of the camera frame and desk. But I would prefer standing because I use a lot of body language.

      @rvobrent I picked up a WA-47 for $520USD, I thought it sounded a tad muddy in the lower mids, and needed a bit more openness. As I have bought it cheaply, I have sent it off to Chad Kelly at Signal Art to be completely remodeled plus an M7 capsule installed. I have recorded audio prior to it was sent off so it will be interesting to compare after the remodel. I could send it to you if you like.....you might get yours redone then :)
