Do you rate this compilation? Is it worth over 100 squids?
Another legend of the Amiga scene leaves us, way too soon. RIP Mr Brown. Nice podcast episode, always interesting to hear these insights and stories.
Yes, he was a great one and a genuinely lovely chap to boot.
1st
I hope you enjoy it. He was a delight to interview and a lovely man who brought so many great games to the gaming world.
Absolutely love this place thanks for the upload Paul on utube. I will hopfully go back there soon in the new year. This place is a must for gamers like me.
Proud to have supported this production. Our school visits take students and teachers back to the computing boom of the 1980s. The children find the games hard but love the challenge. As children we were as pioneering as Egyptians,Romans or Victorians yet the National Curriculum as yet doesn't celebrate the Information Age my mission as a primary school computing teacher is to change this we have parents after school visiting our timeline and everyone has their own unique story. The emotional attachment we have to our first computer is a very strong bond as this production rightly demonstrates.
Nice walk round Drisky, thanks :-)
Charlie did the walkaround and took footage... I was so excited about the place and I went the following day (did 12 hours there 😛)
Yea i did the walkaroud and Paul did the game play footage (Thanks for that Paul) . We did it so everyone could see how great this place is. It was a great vibe i went as soon as paul told me 4 hours for me and going back for a full day soon.
@@TheDrisk Love what you added to it Paul great utube video thanks for you hard work 😄👍👍👍👍👍
Damn crime it doesn't get more views
Yes. we are better known as an audio podcast, its difficult to get noticed on You Tube, sadly, unless you shell out ad money to YT.
@TheDrisk keep up the good work the video edit adds a lot to the whole package
Love Supercars II a great game, lovely visuals, great music and overall just a solid game, takes me back
great vid, nice chat, great games! i would have liked to see heroes quest 2 and esp.shadow fighter as well but it was a good watch. thx.
Yes do many great games to cover.
What are your favourite Gremlin Graphics games released in the 8-bit period?
Am I right in thinking that those Chart Show animations were made on an Amiga?
Yes I believe so, also the TV show catchphrase. Amiga was so versatile.
Wow I never knew that games on the Acorn looked this good. Not on a par with the C64 maybe but definitely better than the Spectrum and Amstrad.
Yes I was surprised listening as well, as not a system I have spentt too much time with either
Wanted to add that my memory from 40 years ago has remembered the BBC version of Scramble, this wasn't available on the Electron on a re-check
no worries, 40 years is a long time ago. It was an awesome show.
Just discovered this channel this morning . I love how this video delves deeply into the family / social aspects of the Spectrum.
The Acorn Electron was a special machine, with the company morphing into ARM Holdings, that powered most smart phones. It is an important platform to learn about. Welcome also Alisdair who joins RGDS and Kingy on this ep, you did brilliantly.
I have a terrible feeling the upscaling in the FPGA N64 is going to be _image_ upscaling, rendering at 320*240 and then postprocessing the framebuffer up to FHD or UHD. It won't render polygons into a high resolution framebuffer like modern emulators do, often with HD texture packs applied, because it is simulating the hardware and the original hardware couldn't do that. Please excuse me if I'm wrong. I hope I am.
A great list... spoilers below and my opinions on the games. STOP READING if you don't want to know what's in the video... Deathchase (true classic) 180 (good fun until you reach Jammy Jim, I prefer Wacky Darts and Bully's Sporting Darts) Atic Atac (great, but I always end up going in circles) Batty (great fun, although I prefer the C64 version with its simultaneous 2-player mode) Bear Bovver (clever riff on Burger Time) Chase HQ (excellent port that is very impressive for the hardware) Chuckie Egg (Eggy Kong!) Cobra (classic Joffa, impressive technically) Dan Dare (a good game but the C64 version is even better) Enduro Racer (good port) Fantasy World Dizzy (my favourite of the Dizzy games, thanks to the storyline and the Yolkfolk) Garfield: Big Fat Hairy Deal (looks like the cartoon but not much fun to play) Head Over Heels (a true classic, and the Next update is superb) Jetpac (I bought a brand new Xbox Series X, the first thing I played on it? Rare Replay emulating this 16K classic!) Jet Set Willy (dare I say it, overhyped - clever for the time but massively frustrating and bugged) R-Type (superb conversion) Snoopy (a surprise choice, but it is impressive graphically) Stop The Express (Congraturation! You success!) Three Weeks In Paradise (A good end to the Wally Week series) Trantor: The Last Stormtrooper (The main character is impressive technically but there's not much gameplay)
thankyou for your opinions, can't disagree on all of the above comments.
Thank you for this great vid mate :-)
What a great introduction to the Spectrum which had so many iconic titles available . It must have been difficult to choose which ones to leave out with your breadth of knowledge. Thanks for a cool video
Great recommendations. Some games I'd completely forgotten about that I can't wait to play again. Cheers Drisky!
quality video mate, never had a spectrum back in the day, so good to see what I missed out on !
great work as always, the guy really loves computer games and knows his stuff, rgds is my fave retro podcast/show
Thanks Drisky, as a speccy newbie, these videos are really helpful in working out what games people loved to play.
appreciate you saying. Hope you have fun with above suggestions.
Predictions before watching:
#1 Chuckie Egg!
Manic Minor
The vids purpose is not for people who sit on Spectrum forums (which seems sadly infested with sarcasm and toxicity these days) but people new or coming to the Spectrum again with The Spectrum device. Its just offering 20 more classic games for people to also try, whilst giving interesting facts about the games.
'Know it all' members of the Spectrum community will post stupid comments 🤷🏻♂️
@@grahamlewis6777what’s that game? Oh , I get it. The more seasoned Spectrum players call this Manic Miner as the main protagonist works in the mines and is not still considered a child under the age of 18. I get you now
This is s great discussion as always fellas. Thanks guys 👍. I'm learning about the Amiga currently, too young to remember it when it was first around. Some great games on the system. Got Antstream so looking forward to playing a few of this games on there. The first console I had myself was the megadrive genesis. Love that console, great memories. Sorry for the essay lol , thanks again guys , subbed 👍. Fantastic as ever.
One word Awesome, Best poad cast for me, chucky Egg orsome game, big n64 fan. The spectrum need to get one of these. Thanks guys for putting this together. cheers paul for the links. As a gamer RGDS Podcast is a must for me its like gamesmaster back in the day Thankyou
The Nintendo OnLine N64 Switch controllers would be a nice combo with the Analogue 64. If you wanted to spend a little more for the genuine feels, just saying. They work really nice like…
I was thinking that, do they work on other devices to the Switch?
@ Yes, they are recognised on Steam Input I can confirm. I just got mine so yet to test on Dark Data for example but will be looking forward to the release of Agent 64 next year. Also want to test the XBplay app from the Steam Store to stream from Xbox for hopefully some Goldeneye action. I can also confirm that they feel just like the originals as I do have one very low-wear original controller. D-pad is maybe even better. Analogue stick is both minutely stiffer in resistance but smoother in actuation. I’ve played a fair bit of Mario Kart on Switch with it and am very pleased with its performance.
As always great work guys.
Thanks Jon.
Drisky, can you test it with your USB arcade stick and let us know if that works?
I can test it with my mayflash stick
@ Chanpion. I have that stick too.
sorry misread whatbyou wanted. yed my arcade stick worked fine.
these guys know their stuff, and you couldn't ask for a better overview of the new speccy
Thankyou, glad you enjoyed the episode.
Very kind words, thank you
To aid in your discovery: A great Bookazine back in the day with many of the best games at the time: worldofspectrum.org/archive/books/complete-your-sinclair-tipshop-tiptionary-the Mag Scans of the three main mags: archive.org/details/Crash36Jan87/Crash/Crash01-Feb84/ archive.org/details/YourSinclair37Jan89/YourSinclair/YourSinclair01-Jan86/ archive.org/details/SinclairUser033Dec84/SinclairUser/SinclairUser-Annual1983/ It is difficult to explain how for pocket money strapped kids the Spekky was... The later mags would give up to 7 free games on a tape, meaning you always had so much to play. We also had budget games with games like Dizzy only £1.99 which was for me two pocket money weeks strung together. Actually in one podcast ep I did... we did a free Bookazine on some of the best cover tapes and later Amiga disks around that time... archive.org/details/rgdscovertapewars_20200404_1401 We also went through the Your Sinclair magazine Top 100 games: ruclips.net/video/A7J4_J-OGDw/видео.html ruclips.net/video/mYAlkH74AZ8/видео.html&t May give some ideas of games for people to try. The vids with info about each year on the Spectrum is taken from the fantastic Your Sinclair Rock & Roll years videos taken decades ago. I have found someone who has uploaded them online in their entirety and makes a fantastic watch, to get the vibe of the Spectrum. ruclips.net/video/Smz3gK24hNc/видео.html
I was thinking of getting a powkiddy V10 specially for GBA with its perfect 1:4 pixel scaling. I'd prefer a slightly larger original GBA replica though, with exactly the same controls.
AHH, what a difference a couple of weeks make!
Interesting approach, let's give this video some love
Thank you again for bringing this to my attention, Paul - both on here and the podcast. My 'translucent blue' version turned up today. 😅
Amazing, the nostalgia for Extreme Violence… so much fun with my brother as teenagers.
Hope you all enjoy, would love to hear your thoughts onnthe games.
The Sinclair ZX Spectrum experience can be summarised in two words; Attribute clash. I had a BBC Model B with twin disk drives, colour monitor and Epson dot matrix printer - I laughed at the Speccy then, and I laugh at it now.
I had a ZX81. I only ever seen a BBC setup like that in school. Very nice .
Having originally grown up in the US before moving to the UK I never experienced the Amiga, and grew up with consoles etc, I’m excited to try out a lot of these games I missed out on back when
Always great guys, just discovered the channel, all the vids have been getting me through work! Keep them coming!
Really enjoying this video version. Some of the games I hadn't seen the c64 versions before so that was extra nice. BTW Fort Apocalypse was also on C64. I had that release, fun but tricky.
Never knew of "The Shmoo" cartoon, as I'm an 80's - 90's kid! That's great bit of trivia, and I can appreciate A Boy and His Blod even more now.
It never got the reruns like Scooby Doo, or Captain Caveman, which is a shame as I loved it
I like the podcast! Great for game ideas! Have you played Mole Mania with the Super Game Boy colors? You guys actually made me contemplate whether it's better to play it this way with the original Game Boy colors because, you know, moles are "blind".
I'm glad you are enjoying the episode. I think Mole Mania is best on the Gameboy, mostly for memory's sake. Also, on emulation, you don't have the big bezel around the game window.
@@TheDrisk Noted. When emulating, I always remove the bezel. One Game Boy game that I think definitely benefits from the Super Game Boy colors is Donkey Kong. I played it on the original Game Boy when I was a child. Playing it now with the Super Game Boy colors makes it feel fresh, and even more enjoyable.
20:20 Check your 20/20.
19:07 Magical Puzzle Popolis (GG) [Drisk]
If I hadn't already bought an anbernic, I'd buy that.
Great to watch as always. Also, M-discs are good for archiving.
The Flipzizzle!
Probably don't want to go past GBA with those controls, but in a way it might be nice to have a device dedicated to stuff brfore analogue sticks came in.
yeah agree, thankfully ps1 and psp and lower all had d-pad... n64 and some dreamcast used analogue and isnt viable. For me gba in correct ratio and arcade is worth it alone.
Cracking little device Paul. Thanks for sharing.
Dr. Isky, what emulation dashboard are you using? Thanks! Informative video, never really tried any GB Colour games.
