This is the Worst Intersection in the Netherlands
*Correction*
In the video I claimed that the Keizer Kareplein has seen 83 crashes and 3 deaths. This is not true. There have been 83 "ongevallen" over three years. It is helpful to think of this word like "traffic incident". Not every collision results in an injury. But there have not been 3 deaths. This error came about from me googling "traffic deaths Keizer karelplein" and seeing the number "3" followed by the word "slachtoffer". "Slachtoffer" means victim and not casualty and I mistakenly translated it to mean the wrong thing. This is 100% my own error.
This means that the Keizer Kareplein is not at least statistically, the most dangerous intersection in the Netherlands. It does howeve...

One US state, Michigan, seems to love to rebuild intersections as roundabouts. Because Michigan is not a through state it can get away with it, I have seen this even in rural areas. They greatly slow speeds and reduce accidents at the expense of speed.

AMERICANS should be forced to spend 40 hours in a classroom learning road rules and laws then 40+ hours learning to drive a manual gearbox car then optional extra with automatic on the road. Instead of a couple of hours then a simple test to drive round the block.

If you want to understand this junction as a newbee? It is a 4 1/2 lane round road without lines and for every connection a T-junction with entering traffic lights and right of way rules. It's a shame you came to The Netherlands in this age. Before 2014 i think this intersection in Den Bosch was a good candidate to be the worst ( ruclips.net/video/RzmWxn1Sfz8/видео.htmlsi=hcFPnAn1HyZwRS8i )

European cities have a cartwheel road network. All inbound roads (spokes) from other cities end up on the market square (hub). To reduce travelling through the busy hub, there a ring road (rim). In most older cities there's an old ring around the city center and and a modern ring around the entire city. Nijmegen is lacking the ring-roads, forcing drivers through the hub (Keizer Karel plein)

There are still many, many other examples of bad traffic design in Netherland. Maybe not quite on this scale, but I live close to an intersection with traffic lights that do just random mess. It would be much improved by simply removing the traffic lights. Or reprogramming them to something sane. But for whatever reason, they're not doing that.

I have crossed this intersection many times and it is not as bad as it seems. I can imagine as a beginner driver it is a scary thing to do. But if you can read the traffic it is not that bad. Everybody on the roundabout is in the same situation and I always noticed that everybody looks very carefully at each other so I really get scared there.

There is three simple pieces of advice for this roundabout: 1. watch the traffic lights of the cyclists. Red: no cars will enter from that intersection. Green: cars may come from that intersection. 2. drive as fast as you can. 3. stay on the inside for as long as possible and only go to the outside just before your exit comes. I learned to drive in Nijmegen so it is easy peasy.. There are at least 2 even more confusing roundabouts in Nijmegen. The Steve Biko one, which depending on which side you can from is a roundabout or it isn't and the Gelderse Poort, same principle as Keizer Karel.

16:00 That's a very important insight that all American traffic engineers have missed. We don't have free flow traffic in cities so the assumption that more lanes will move more people is just false. The intersections are the bottleneck and wider lanes actually cause more delays at intersections. It's amazing that it took until 2024 for a smart student who studied in the Netherlands to finally bring this insight to the US. Now that we have this knowledge, please for the love of god stop widening our streets.

Every time I drive there (which is quite often) I start complaining, then thinking about how it could be done better and still handle this volume of traffic (and believe me, Nijmegen does everything to make driving there as unattractive as possible) from that many different intersecting roads. It's probably the lesser of all evils...
