My passion has always been the pursuit of wild game, being outdoors, hunting, fishing and shooting guns. I love planting food plots, building feeders, tractor work and overall wildlife management in general. If I'm not doing tractor work of some type you'll usually find me shooting some type of gun at my make shift range in my dove field. I love all types of shooting sports like clays with a shotgun, steel with a pistol, precision with a 22 or long range with a center fire rifle. I'm not a master at any of these, but I continue to buy and try different guns and ammo. I love putting guns together or tinkering with them as well as loading ammo and experimenting with new loads. I started reloading when I was 16 under the tutelage of my father and that was some 45 years ago. All of this ties back into the original passion of pursuing wild game. This is always on my mind when I’m testing out new and old guns, different ammo or loads, working on the tractor or walking a piece of property.
Going 1000 Yards for D.O.P.E. - 7MM Rem Mag
I needed to get some solid "Data On Previous Engagement" (D.O.P.E.) with my 7mm Remington Magnum. I'd shot it 1000 yards last year, but I didn't record the information. This time, I zeroed at 100 and recorded the data for each range that I shot. Last year I had a 13.6 Mils for 1000 yards listed, but I am not sure how that worked out except maybe for a 200 yard zero. I truly don't know the foundation for that DOPE, but this time I started over and re-zeroed at 100 yards and walked it up from there. [200 yards = 0.6 Mils, 300 yards = 1.1 Mils, 600 yards = 3.7 Mils, 800 yards = 5.6 Mils, 900 yards = 6.6 Mils, 1000 yards = 8.1 Mils] @deadzeroshooting10 @deadzeroshootingpark4716...

Dad's Old Guns
Просмотров 38512 часов назад
I took the opportunity to show the guns my father has to include a couple that I have up there for him to use around the house. Being that these are 300 miles from me I figured I'd get some footage of them while I was there. I took the time to clean all of them as they were covered in dust and the pistol actually had some surface rust on it due to being kept in a gun case. I briefly go over the...

The pistol weights in at 18.4 oz and has an overall length of 6.2". This pistol can be purchased with a manua...

Verifying the Zero for the Ruger Gen II 308

Given that the gun season in GA starts on the 19th of October, I figured that I better verify the zero. In September I'd been checking ammo and groups and the last decent group I got was with was the 150 grain Remington Core Lokt Tipped. Since this is readily available at my local store I figured I'd sight it in for this. Here I show where I'd been looking at the groups this rifle gives with th...

Introduced in 2021 as Springfield Armory's version of the Browning Hi-Power when FN Herstal announced that the production of the Hi-Power would end. Browning Arms discontinued the Hi-Power in early 2018, but in 2022, FN announced they would resume production of the Browning Hi-Power. As it turns out the new Browning Hi-Power is actually a new design of the Hi-Power, where as the Springfield SA-...
Shooting the Taurus 689 Revolver

My friend's revolver from back in the late 80's to early 90's. A well made heavy stainless steel DA/SA revolver in .357 magnum. This one has a 4" barrel and there were also 6" barreled versions as well. In this video we take it out for a spin and shoot a few rounds out of it.
Making a Food Plot
Просмотров 8121 день назад
This video takes you through an entire process of reclaiming a food plot from years ago. I didn't realize the tree planters did not plant it in pine trees. It has been about five years since this area has been planted so we need to re-open the trail going into it, clean out the plot area, harrow it to create a seed bed and plant it.
Stevens Little Scout 14 1/2 Falling Block .22LR
Просмотров 87628 дней назад
This little rifle was produced between 1906 and 1941 with either an 18" or 20" barrel. The Model 14 1/2 was chambered in 22LR and was also a take down rifle. It has a two piece hardwood stock with a case colored receiver. It is a falling block utilizing a thumb knob to drop the block for loading and extraction. The Stevens Arms Company developed the .22LR cartridge in 1887. Some ways to get an ...

How did my Helene Preps Workout?
Просмотров 278Месяц назад
I was lucky compared to a lot of people in the southeast that suffered the wrath of hurricane Helene. While initially predicted to pass directly over the dove field it actually passed about 100 miles east of the field. Being on the wast side is the weak side of the hurricane. What the field received was at least five inches of rain, maybe more. See how my preps and the field overall fared again...
Hurricane Helene - Dove Field Wash Out Control

Being that I'd just harrowed and planted about three acres in wheat, oats and peas on the 21st and 22nd of September (2024), I knew that with the amount of rain coming the field would likely wash out. Having used this "Middle Buster" plow before to cut deep ditches in the field to slow the flow of water, I decided to head out there right before the arrival of rain form Hurricane Helene. I'm 150...

After working in the field all day I thought I'd do some quick bottle shooting. I was so hot and tired I couldn't seem to hit anything. There was actually another factor involved, but it too was likely brought on from being hot and tired.
Hunting Ammo Testing for the 308 Gen II - Continued
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.Месяц назад
I try some more hunting rounds through the Ruger American Gen II in .308. I've found that this gun is particular about the rounds it likes. Last time it liked the Norma Whitetail and the standard Remington Core-Lokt. What does it like this time? Also, as a double check I shot it at 200 yards and what I find is that the cold bore is playing a big role in consistency.

Nice firearm I have one made by puma, which is Rossi. You will love it reload for the gun and you will be pleasantly surprised.
I definitely will try on the reloading. I just need to get the dies and I'll be set. Thanks Darrell!
I was just there last month. I live in Soddy Daisy
Cool. I used to drive through Soddy Daisy on the way up to my dad's. I haven't in a few years now because I changed my route. I now drive through Alabama up to 24 west and then north into Dunlap where I pick up 111. The main reason for the route change was because I hated the 75 north traffic just outside of Atlanta. This route also lets me avoid Chattanooga traffic as well. I love Soddy Daisy and Sequachie Valley as great places to live. It also makes it nice being close to that shooting range too.
The levermatic, yes! I believe that short stroke was designed specifically for Kessler Arm's model 50 levermatic shotgun, made from late 1951 to mid 1953 before Kessler filed for bankruptcy. The mechanism was made in an attempt to make the shotgun faster and more desirable, but due to Kessler closing their doors, so few of their shotguns were made. Marlin bought their patent and most of their levermatic rifles were offered in .22 rimfire until 1969, I think. I made a boring video of Kessler Arms about 3 years. Feel free to check that out if you're interested. I would love to get my hands on a model 50 levermatic!
Hi Rustic, yes I have an article on the Marlin Levermatics and here is what it stated. Title: Marlin’s Levermatic Rifle Line Offered Untraditional Design by John Malloy Quote from article: "Toward the end of its existence, the Kessler firm introduced a lever-action shotgun, called the Kessler “Lever-Matic.” The Lever-Matic gun was unique among lever-action firearms in that it required a very short stroke of the lever to operate the action. A mechanism with a special accelerator lever allowed this. When the company went bankrupt, Numrich Arms Company of West Hurley, NY, bought all the remaining Kessler guns and parts. They had occasion to contact Marlin, and supplied complete guns and parts for study. From that start, the Marlin Levermatic rifles developed. Marlin saw an opportunity to create a new niche in lever-action rifles-a hammerless short-stroke rifle with a different magazine type. Marlin negotiated a royalty agreement with the original inventors, and Marlin engineers Ewald Nichol and Tom Robinson developed the mechanism for the rifles. The short, smooth action used a cam-and-roller accelerator system that allowed a lever movement of less than 1½ inches. This short movement allowed the shooter’s hand to remain on the grip of the stock, and was much faster than a traditional lever action. The basic Levermatic action was a strong one, and in 1963, Marlin decided to bring out a centerfire version of the Levermatic. This became the Marlin Model 62. With the centerfire Model 62, Marlin returned to the use of box magazines. In the first catalog listing, the calibers to be offered were .357 Magnum, .256 Winchester Magnum and .22 Remington Jet." I'll certainly check out the video you mentioned. I always love the history part of old guns. Thanks!
You shot several different loads but nearly all of it was 150gr? I'd have thought part of finding a load it likes is more related to the bullet weight rather than the bullet design or variations between manufacturers What I'm saying is is if your barrel doesn't like 150s but you don't test any other bullet weight you might think that guns a piece of crap when it shoots 168 or 169s like a beast I've seen groups as small as .3moa So what are you actually determining by trying all these different brands of ammo at 150 grains? The 308 offers you a huge window of bullet weights to choose from from 110 grains to 220 grains but everything you tested was 150 interesting approach
So basically my approach is testing hunting ammo that I had on hand and what I can find easily at the store. I did test some 165 grain as well as some 168 grain. The 168 shoot sub MOA in my Ruger Precision all day long, but not so much in this rifle. And to tell you the truth I was kind of shocked that they didn't shoot a sub MOA group out of the Gen II. The 150 grain standard Core-Lokt shoots sub MOA in my Gen I Ruger American and I'd prefer to use that, but what I ended up going with is the 150 grain Core Lokt Tipped. They consistently give me 1 inch or less and can be found at my local store just about any time I walk in.
👊🏻👍🏻
Thanks Ken!
If money was no object , what rig would you buy ?
F450 4WD crew cab🤑
Likely a Sako of some kind.
Nice!
Thanks Mike!!
Not bad Cervus
Thanks Randle!
Shot marker is very cool .. no more guessing we’re you hit . It s there
Yeah I agree. It is just right there next to you. I like that too.
The glar😅on the screen stops it from being seen for me anyway.
Yeah, I couldn't see the glare when I was looking at it. Only when I was editing the video is when I noticed it. Oh well.
Nice rifle Cervus
Thanks Randle!
Cervus and your friend if he’s there so Hey 👋
Hi Randle 👋🏼
1000 yards 👍 Thanks!
That is an insanely awesome group at 1000 yards, Cervus. Congrats 🎉 Way to prove 7mm Mag is still a boss!!! That is a sweet looking rifle. Built it you said?
Thanks Jeff! Well let's say "put it together". I bought the barrel, the stock, and the original rifle that I took apart to get to the action. I took it to a real gunsmith for head spacing verification, threading of the barrel, free floating the barrel and bedding the action in the stock. It shoots great.
A buddy let me shoot one. I shot it standing up and the recoil sent the scope into my forehead making me bleed a little. My buddy laughed and said he never shot it standing up before..... I was the test dummy that day.
This one scopped me once. Different scope, no muzzle device to reduce recoil and I was in an awkward position trying to shoot it. I don't think I've ever shot this one off hand or standing. I think I'll just keep it on the bench since you've already tested that one out.
@@cervus-venator LOL wise decision.
😮 Me acuerdo la primera vez que dispare con un 7mm, fue una cosa maravillosa y eso que era niño😂😎👍
Sí, me encanta el cartucho. Es simplemente divertido disparar.
I think this is the exact rifle I was looking for. I do home gunsmithing and a buddy just handed me a little rifle this morning to look at. All the markings are worn off so I started looking through RUclips and I think thats the one. Gonna finish watching the video and I appreciate you making it, sir
Very cool and I am glad this helped you out. I've found some older videos on YT about this rifle. One guy has a video showing the complete break down of the rifle. It is titled: Stevens Little Scout Mod 14 1/2 Disassembly
@cervus-venator Thank you, sir. I'll be sure to check it out
What are these worth these days? I can never find any online
At a local store where I live they have one in .40 cal and they are asking around 700 for it. That seems a little high. I've seen them at gun shows between 550 and 650. I found one that sold on GB on October 3rd of this year for 550. Other than for nostalgia or collector reasons I'd get the new make for about the same price.
Just made my night! 👊👍
Cool, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
The case hardening on th e Pardner is very reminiscent of the H&R Handy Gun from the 1920s and 30s. Nice set of gun right there Cervus.
Thanks Halfmile!!
Did you like!? Would you drift the sight or adjust hold? My last two pistolies both consistently shot left!?!? I drifted because I wanted them to shoot where I was naturally shooting?!? Like my others! 🤷🏼♂️ I don’t always carry the same tool! Sometimes you may not think about how “this one” shoots!? When you have to?! Maybe I’m just getting older? Get off my lawn guy?! 😂 Looks like a sweet tool though!
I personally didn't shoot it, but my friend did. If I recall I think he said he was going to drift the sight to get it shooting where he wants. We both normally drift sights when we have one that we shoot regularly. Thanks Ken.
👍👍Some great old guns, I love that marlin and I have the same .410 shotgun. I bought mine 26 years ago.
Thanks Lance! That's about the same time I picked this one up. 97 or 98 I think.
Hey Cervus, thanks for sharing. Very cool.
Thanks Scooter! I appreciate you checking it out.
Isn't it beautiful? And now we are blessed with the MK III :)
Yes, unfortunately I have not really looked at the latest production. Mainly because I had MSRP shock.
I'm guessing that a Squirrel or 2 might have been taken off that porch. Your Dad has a good assortment & glad you chose them for him. Good stories are involved with them I'm sure. 🙏👍
Beautiful, can’t beat dad❤
So True Ira! Can't Beat Dad!
They may be gone in flesh but their memories will always be there
True Paul! The 6mm Remington and 25-06 that my uncle put together are rifles that every time I look at them or even think about them reminds me of my uncle.
That's my kinda guns.
Cool Boom! Yeah I like them all. The 57 is my favorite being that is the one I grew up with.
Very nice. Thanks for sharing. I have couple passed down to me that have been in family for 70 years. If only they could talk. Lots of memories with them. When I look at them they make me happy and sad. But sad in a good way. 👍
I understand that. The Mauser action sporters that my uncle put together give me the same feeling since he is no longer with us.
Beautiful long guns buddy!!
Thanks Ken! Much appreciated.
I have a Winchester Model 12 12g that belonged to my Dad. I got it in 1963 I think. When I went into the Navy my older brother had it refurb"d by a local gunsmith and it's as tight today as when I got out ot the Navy (1969). Oh the memories.
That's awesome Gary. I love the history people share with their handed down fire arms. Great memories too.
Thanks for sharing! My favorite was the Marlin. What a neat action.
That's my favorite too. "Levermatic" such a cool little rifle.
Hi Cervus! Awesome video. I love those old simple guns.
Thanks Charles! Me too.
Great guns!
Thanks Marc!!
Very nice collection! I really like the model 57 andthe 410 as my dad gave me a 410 for my 10th bday...wish i still had it , disappeared when i eft it at sister& her husbands when i went to college...
Yeah that thing happens sometimes. My Dad gave his Ruger Single Six to my brother-in-law. I was disappointed to say least.
My son has the Ranger .22 that my Dad learned to shoot with. Dad taught me and both of my sisters how to shoot with it. We had lots of fun at the Camp shooting cans and learned if we shot just right the can would pop out of the water instead of sinking.
Cool, yeah that Marlin 57 has had a lot of rounds put through it by me more so than my dad. When I was between 12 and 15 I was always shooting that rifle.
Great memories, thanks for sharing
Thank you Bob!
❤️🩹🤘🏼🙏🙏🤘🏼❤️🩹
Thanks CW!!
The Marlin I just mentioned was made between 1941 to 1960. If I read the google search right
That sounds correct.
I finally found a Marlin model 80 DL. The DL stands for Deluxe model. The rifle is a Bolt action to. I found this one at a local pawnshop as well as a firearms licensed on the other side of the building.
Very cool Randle! That DL is a nice one.
I wish the old firearms could talk and tell all the old stories! 👍Thanks
That'd be something Mike. Nice old guns for sure.
Cervus that’s a great looking shootin iron you got there
Thanks, I just consider them as Dad's shootin irons.
Good memories. My Dad just bypassed himself and directly gave me all my grandparents firearms.
Well, that was nice of him. Keepsakes they are Jeff!!
Cervus hey
Hi Randle 👋
Nice pistola , I got my dads too
Cool Steve. I have one just like this one but I had to have it refinished as most of the bluing was worn off of it.
1988
Thanks!
What a waste of expensive ammo. Ditch the steel plate. Use a 4x4 FEET white cardboard target with an aiming point in the centre to start with. You are all steady with a sandbag but your target is horrible since it does not tell you how far you have missed. You also keep changing the range. Then when you know you are shooting high, you shoot standing unsupported and you hit a couple! We have no idea how well this rifle groups at say 50 yards.
Good advice Tim! Let me know when you post a video showing how it is done.
Range? 100?
This looks like I'm at the 100 yard mark. I had to go back and look at the video as I shot some from the 50 yard line to get started, then I shot some at 75 yards and finished at 100 yards.
I'm trying to talk pops into a gen3 they seem bang for buck on any buck forsure
@@Austen-t4x If you talk him into a 308 try the Remington Core Lokt tipped. That is what has worked in mine and another friend told me he sighted his in with this brand as it really likes them. Good luck. I like the gen II for all the added features they put into it.
@cervus-venator ya the only reason I say gen 3 is because they just came out I belive so why not imo the gen2 looked just as good
Excellent video - trying to figure out the orientation of choke lever and spring - at 32:30 you give a great description and show how it goes on- thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
No idea how I found this…actually, I do. Searched Duck Duck Go for “Hunting Blind Rest” and this is one of the results. Nice Job! Hope you put something in there in the summer to keep wasps/yellow jackets from taking up residence in the summer and owls out too. I just got back from checking mine, they’re Redneck blinds and I managed to not completely close off one window- I’ll bet there were 100 yellowjackets in there so after an hour and a half (to town/back)…in my best Duck Dynasty voice, “they gone.” The owls were years ago, like you I had open windows. imagine my surprise walking up a 10’ ladder, opening the door and a half dozen baby owls were rearing their wings up and hissing at me. I’m surprised I survived the ordeal- didn’t fall backwards or down, had the presence of mind to close the door and leave. Three weeks later they were gone on their own but OMG did they leave evidence behind…the worst smell and inches thick of…well, their “stuff” which included feathers and a bunch of what was left of mice etc. The white caked gifts were the best, I was advised to burn it to the ground but a half gallon of bleach, five or ten gallons of water, a generator, a shop vac and lots of towels and paper towels later and I reclaimed what was mine! Yellow sticky paper for bugs, maybe 4 of them ought to keep the bugs out but I can’t help you on the owls…if it was me I’d remove my chairs and cover the bottom with something like a tarp and maybe figure out a way to keep them scared out of it. A wide open hunting blind is exactly what momma is looking for in the summertime! Well done and hopefully you haven’t had these problems or maybe I’ve helped you to avoid one or more. I guarantee one or the other or both will happen if you leave it open and up long enough. Nice job!
