How to Scratch Build
Просмотров 19321 день назад
Finally, I found time to sit at my desk and do some work. This is the first of a series of videos looking at the dark art of scratch building. This episode discusses the essential tools you need to start your scratch-building journey.
Another Update

I'm back again. I know I should pull my finger out and get more content sorted, but sadly, real life has been a bit hectic. I do have plans for a few more episodes. Until then, here's a minor update. Yes, it does include a rant, but only a little one, but there are naughty words!!
Can you help a poor old man to share some painty fun?

It is hard losing a family member but they are in a much better place. No longer suffering in this realm. Keep your chin up and be happy. Thats what our loved ones would have wanted. Subscribed. All it took was you mentioning scratch building. Yes, fully agree that people often build a walls of "I can't do that",without ever even trying. You will be amazed at how fast your skills improve. You can build anything you like. It takes your most important tool first. Thats your imagination and a few tools. I model the Steel Industry in HO. I have to scratch build most everything for my hobby.
Lovely to see you back in front of the lens mate, I love your little shows. 👍
A scratch built video about scratch building models 😊 Very good and inspiring video, thank you.
If you don't mind me saying that you were in the best place at the passing of your Dad, as you said, he wasn't alone. Also, as our parents were there at our arrival it's fitting we are there at their passing. I was for my Mum and horrible as it seems I'm very grateful for it. My condolences to you ❤
Mate you have a very endearing personality in front of the camera, I enjoy your videos. Been looking forward to seeing your skills in action for some time - and yes you DO have them!
Your gallery figures look great Nigel
The figures look amazing and I agree with your comments about 3 d printed vehicles. Finding decent T26's in 15mm is a nightmare.
Hi Nigel, great painting on the figures, theyt look great. Can you let me know where the Panzer 1 came from, it really looks good! Cheers.
I would email a few of the channels whos video style you like and they I imagine would tell you directly. From my knowledge of camera work I would say a lot of them use overhead tripod system. Like you would see on some mics or lights. If I remember correctly others just ackwardly work around the camera.
I think thats a sound idea. I do have an overhead camera arm already, I think it'd just a case of experimenting to see what works best.
gOOD,,,YOUR GOAL NOW SHOULD BE TO GET EXPELLED FROM THE CLUB. tHIS REQUIRES THAT YOUR UPLOADS ARE INFORMATIVE , CREATIVE AND OF INTELLIGENT CONTENT,. THUSFAR YOU ARE BORDERING ON BEING THE EQUIVALENT OF THE SEPTIC DISCHARGE FROM THAT BOIL IN PUTINS SPHINCTER

What are your thoughts on the Blitzkrieg/ 1st Corps Panzer Ib?
cool!
So much attention for those carlist chauchats 😂
The top flag looks like an Atora suet packet.
Forward, lads, there's a steak and kidney pudding at the end of this for you all😂
These are amazing figures and thanks there
Thanks for the Ebro review they look really nice, just waiting for a small order from them to drop through the letter box
oooohhhhh, what did you order?
@@aviewfromtheduckpond a few sample packs to have a look 1,5,41 and 58 and some head sets
@@clivewaterhouse2802 let me know what you think of them.
Falange is pronounced Falan-Hey
Thanks for that info, I will make sure I say it properly from now on 😊
Cheers Nige look forward to the next one
I like Chain of Command in some ways, but the reinforcements/support rules is not compatible with my storage space XD. Bolt Action works better for me, less "flavour" but enough special rules for the period. That "Espana" makes my eyes bleed...why didn't they configure spanish keyboard? Ñ! XD Great "Hasta mañana", muy bien pronunciado 😁 👏👏👏
Bolt Action is another great set of rules. I've yet to see if period-specific lists exist for the rules, so I must do that. I will make sure I remember to add accents to letters😂
There is an unofficial "Bolt Action Guerra Civil" PDF but in spanish, with a lot of Ñ...maybe a translation will be fine, I'll try to contact the designers 🤔
@@pacofores It might be worth a translate, there are a few players over here that like the period, and I should think there may be more in the US.
I just printed off Espana last week, currently painting Empress/Anglian Civil Guard and Carabineros. Dragged my SCW stuff out of storage and ordered alot more going big, at least a Section(Platoon in English terms ) of each faction, a Company of IB/Republican Army and a full Centuria of Militia. Purchased a lot of books as well that wernt available before.
Nice one. Would love to see some of the finished figures. What books have you picked up? Lots of great stuff doing the rounds.
@@aviewfromtheduckpond I will send you some pics when Im able, my main problem now is matching the stufff I painted way back. There is also scale creep in the Empress stuff the latest Republican figures are a head taller than the originals! Ive not decided what IB im doing I will probably do muliple flags so I can swap them around. Not much interest in the English/American Battalions myself, unfortunately the amount of books concentrating on those Battalions in the last decade gives the impression they were in a majority in the IB when they were a minority.
@A View From The Duck Pond Ive got Henry Buckley, a couple by Alexander Clifford, German Military Vehicles SCW, Peter Kemp all available at reduced price and Charles Esdaile which is a Military History bit pricey but I wanted something not from the political angle. A few others as well. Look here for some bargains. Naval & Military Press. Im finding alot of other recent books in English have a pretty biased political outlook with not mich understanding of the military aspects.
@@andysykes4328 That's very true. I've read the Kemp book and Frank Thomas' account as I like to get a viewpoint from both sides. I will be sure to check out the titles/authors you mention. Picked up the German military vehicles in the SCW by Mata, Molina and Manrique , it's a great reference source.
@@andysykes4328 I've started writing down the paint colours I use and have even made up some colour charts😂 If I mix up a colour, I note which paints I used so I can refer back. Still love the old Anglian/Empress minis, and yes they have got a little bit taller. I do love the Ebro stuff though, so will gradually replace all my old metals with those😳
Yes, great paint job, I need that recipe, my republicanos need to be painted 🤔😁
Love to see that mate!
Really nice video Nigel, your modelling skills are impressive, look forward to the journey, would certainly take a few tanks from you if you get them cast-regards Clive
Good stuff, Nigel, looking forward to the next part of the saga...
Woo hoo! Scratch it! Scratch it! You do it better anyway!
I'm going to, and it will be messy😂
Well done mate, especially good news on the prognosis.
Subscribed and looking forward to more on Ebro figures-clive
Good to see you back. I still have a fair sized collection of Anglian Minis quite a few painted. Anglian International Brigade were the first figures I reviewed for Wargames Illustrated many moons ago!
Holaaaa! Now here you have my subscribe, sir, indeed! I played yesterday a Bolt Action Guerra Civil Española game, using Empress minis, but I have just received some Ebro Miniatures, mostly for comparative...but yes, their minis are beautiful!!! I have also played Flames of War "España en Llamas" with 15mm minis (Peter Pig)...and yes, Guerra Civil is still a sensitive subject, even among wargame players. You better have both sides armies, or maybe you will be tagged as "rojo (communist?)" or "facha (fascist)"...and be careful posting pictures of games or miniatures or be ready to be tagged again...yes, 2023 seems no so far away from 1936 as it seems...España 🤷♂😅
Hola back. Thanks for the heads-up about gaming the conflict, such an incredibly sensitive subject. I will be building both sides for my games, but I have more of a leaning to the left than the right, so I'm more Rojo than Facha😂. I've decided on Chain of Command for the rules, but may have a look at Bolt Action. Just put another order into Ebro Miniatures, the figures are truly lovely. Thanks for subscribing😊
A fine return. 👍👍
I also have cancer. Model making is my release from the stress of life.
Sorry to hear you are in the same boat as me. I hope your cancer is under control. My hobby helps me so much. We need that release from the plight we find ourselves in just to be able to escape for a few short hours.
Yay! Scale Rant!
I'm such a scale nazi😂
@@aviewfromtheduckpond 😂😂
at 14:36 theres a mould line on the helmet, how does one remove that from metal figures? Also do you not find the details in metal figures more obscured than on plastic figures? I once purchased Bolt Action metal figures and i wasn't happy with them and their quality. I did some research and comparisons to other metal figures and they all look the same, however these ones you're showcasing from "Empress Miniatures" look very well detailed for metal castings. Im impressed.
Very nice review. It looks a good model. I made my first Rubicon model yesterday, PzIV D and it is excellent. PzIII should arrive next week. The shop that I order from also has the T26, so will probably buy that at the same time. Hope that you are keeping well.
Very nice review thanks so much
Really enjoyed this video
Hi Nigel hope all is ok
Subscribed - in a similar situation to you Nigel and like you the hobby and the community help immensely. Looking forward to diving into the duckpond :-)
Kit looks good
Glad to see you are doing well. Very interesting vid, looking forward to seeing your progress. Was the 45mm turret the only varient in the SCW?
The versions sent to Spain all had the same 45mm turret, they were a mix of the standard turret, and the command version with the big radio aerial, you do see a lot of images where they have removed the aerial, but the mounts are still there....tank command structure was very basic, TBH they did not have a clue how best to use them.
@@aviewfromtheduckpond thanks Nigel 👍
Ps. Reading an old miniature war Games mag in which an article about the exploits of the CTV stated they had ATRs, not sure on this. If correct did any other forces have this weapon?
@@vonketteringham Thats a new one on me, I'm pretty certain that no one else had them. There were a lot of AT gun variants around, along with some 20mm stuff like Oerlikons, and the Breda they stuck on the Pz1...I expect they are talking about the Solothurn ATR, but I certainly can't recall seeing it listed anywhere...will have a look in my big CTV book i have, see if that mentions it.
Nigel, glad to have you back and on the mend.
Great to get another video out from you. I'm just now getting round to ordering some Germans from the Empress range you reviewed :) Would it be possible to see a show-case of your Spanish Civil War if you have time for the vid sometime?
Thanks for the comments....I'll see what I can do with the SCW stuff :-)
Are these all meant to be painted in winter themes? I'd like them for later eastern front but not so keen on winter though I'd fancy doing the battle of bulge
No. you can paint them in camouflage, or winter white, they are perfect either way. Mine are being painted for the Eastern Front, in camo...
Très beau travail mon ami Nigel Et bonne explication très intéressante pour moi Très beau modèle J adore ta vidéo je suis abonné de FRANCE 👍 Very good work my friend Nigel And good explanation very interesting for me Very nice model I enjoy watching your video this is a pleasure for the eyes 😎👍 I am subscribed of France And I would be proud to have you as subscriber too 👍
