Neal Casal was a songwriter, singer, guitarist, record producer, photographer, surfer and friend. Over the course of a 30-plus year career, he appeared on multiple recordings as a member of bands like Circles Around the Sun, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Beachwood Sparks, The Skiffle Players and Hard Working Americans. He added his sublime musical touch to studio sessions and live performances by a long list of artists, including Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, The Jayhawks, James Iha and Vetiver. His extensive body of solo work was embraced by audiences worldwide and continues to be rediscovered in his passing. With the formation of the Neal Casal Music Foundation, the body of work Casal left behind, including an extensive archive of unreleased material, will be reimagined to further shine a light on his artistry, while providing resources to raise money for positive change.
Where the Wait Isn't Long - Joe Wilkinson
When Neal Casal released his 4th album The Sun Rises Here in 1998 he needed to get a touring band together for months of shows all over Europe and the UK, where Neal had suddenly become a bit of an underground sensation. Neal and his longtime collaborator, keyboardist John Ginty, enlisted fellow local New Jersey musicians Joe Wilkinson on guitar, Jon Hummel on drums and Dave DeCastro on bass. It was a great band and they bonded as brothers over long van drives, foreign languages and sold-out shows. It was an impactful time for all of the guys, leaving memories that have lasted these past 25 years plus. When Neal took his own life in 2019 at age 50, they were each left confused and heartbr...

In the early 1990’s, Neal spent a lot of time on outdoor adventures with his close friends Eric and Libby McDonald at their house in rural Wisconsin. It was a beautiful, idyllic time that stunningly and sadly was broken by the kidnapping and murder of a 12-year old local girl, Cora Jones. The community was devastated by this awful event and Neal was particularly affected to think such horror co...

We miss Neal every day, but the date of his passing is the hardest. On the eve of the 3rd anniversary of that awful day, this beautiful acapella performance by Dori Freeman that opened the tribute concert to Neal at the Capitol Theatre back on September 25th, 2019 brings some comfort. The song is “Your Long Journey”, a reflection on death that has the sound of centuries in it. Written by the in...

Neal Casal made many 8-track recordings at his home studio in Columbia, New Jersey between 1997 and 1999. Most were largely based around his acoustic guitar, John Ginty’s B3 organ and Angie McKenna’s beautiful harmony singing. This version of Tom T. Hall’s song “Running Wild” from his 1973 record 'For the People in the Last Hard Town' was recorded by Neal in 1997 along with a couple other great...

His Letterman performance of "Two" with Ryan Adams is legendary. As Cavafy said "He was sensitive to the point of suffering/And this illumined his expression". The true fate of the true artist.
Great tribute! Neal would be proud and humbled. Rest In Peace, Neal - You are dearly missed.
A superb song to Neal. video spot on too. Thx Mr. Wilkinson and that A-1 band.
Really fine voice on a great song. The band is Neal level, of course.
Thanks Joe and bandmates.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful, bittersweet song and imagery for Neal. Wishing you all healing. 🦋 💟
Beautiful. Thank you.
Sounds like a song Neal could have written. Well done.
Beautiful song guys - Thanks
Such a breathtakingly beautiful song and video that really captures Neal s soul .🎸💜..thank you Joe 💞
Wow, that is nice! Great singing. The horns are sweet.
I wrote this one , too
Curious to me as the writer of this storyline that the melody/the music enveloping the lyrics is so similar to that surrounding grace potters ‘ I’m the only one who’s bleeding’ which I also wrote the lyricality for
Loved your work in the Cardinals, and this is a beautiful tribute. RIP Neal, Lord have mercy and forgiveness and give you life everlasting... everything is moving
This video/song was put together posthumously. A beautiful result of friends and family. Thank you. I hope Neal is in his happy place.
The true Gift a Songwriter gives is a piece of art that will remain forever. Long after that artist has left, the gift remains present for those lucky enough to discover it’s beauty.
I know this is probably not something Neal would want to be public knowledge, but I can’t help but be really curious what addictions Neal was battling. Maybe that’s offensive of me to ask, but I don’t want to know so that I can think less of him, but more so that I can relate to him. I was a huge fan of the guy and knowing his weaknesses wouldn’t change that.
It's a damn shame. So talented.
I don’t believe he killed himself
Neal rendered quite a number of my storylines whether solo or with Adams.
I can't wait to hear the remastered version. This was the first of Neal's songs that I've been able to listen to in completion. My heart still breaks but I made it through!
Like his work but i quickly found him to be a conceited prick...i can't imagine him helping people with mental health issues
Falling in love with Billy, introduced me to this song. It is so evocative and sad. It’s the definition of how I feel my life with my family. I just never heard it out loud.
Neal and Angie's duet sounds like heaven 💜
We love you Neal!💔RIP
When the first time I met Neal. He was playing with Blackfoot. Then I started to follow him in his solo albums. When he played here close to me at Lock'n I missed that! I didn't know that he was going to be there nor my other favorite Guitarist Doyle Bramhall ll. But was so sadden when I heard about his crossing over. I try to buy all of his music because of the depth and the honest song writting he did and the arrangements. He is an under the wire musician that never got the radio play but had a underground root followers that enjoyed his talent and will be Greatly missed! Peace be with his travels!
Great stuff Gary.
It would have been Neal's 55th birthday today. Happy heavenly birthday, Neal! Rest in peace, brother. You are greatly missed.
Gone far too soon Neal...
Fantastic song. Thank you Billy, Neal, Dave, and all his friends.
It’s so interesting that the NCMF logo is emblematic of what is discussed during the “Life is small” section at 47:22.
Oteil you have been my biggest inspiration from ABB to TTB aquarium rescue to the dead and all other projects ive been halfway across the country just to see you play so happy to see you making new music as a fellow bass player you always amaze me and have given me hope during these hard times in my life
I love The Cardinals!
Très bien 👍
The Miss is real friend! Just bought the record "Everything is moving and Green Moon" I will always remember meeting him at Roanoke Va. When he was playing for Blackfoot. He was a really cool and friendly person and I own several of his music now! I regret not seeing him at "Lock'n" playing with Chris Robertson and others! Peace on his journey even now!
Nice
How lovely, love the CRBrothers there. Neal Casal forever! ❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Love🦋🎶🦋
Great song.☮️
Found Aaron about a year ago, never knew he covered one of Neal’s songs, pretty sweet!
❤
thnx!!!
Cool !
Assai bravo✨
Neal quickly became my favorite player in the jam scene when I was introduced to CATS and CRB. I was only a fan for a cpl years before he passed and never got to see him live. Very similar story to when I became a huge fan of Dimebag Darrel and then a cpl years later he was killed and I also never got to see him either.
Very moving tribute...
Something else altogether
Absolutely beautiful! Gorgeous song and petformed wondefully. I just happened on this. And love it
Cora Jones is never forgotten.
